MSNBC picture editors talk a lot about what makes a great news picture. We obviously have very diverse opinions, but there are some things that seem to ring true for most of us. Good composition helps. Interesting light is always a huge plus. Good access to the subject is paramount, but for me most of all there needs to be a good moment. That is the essence of an engaging still photograph.
