Palestinian Najat al-Nadi (L) touches the face of her son Raed after he was detained by Israeli soldiers at the Hawara checkpoint near the West Bank city of Nablus May 2, 2007. According to an Israeli army spokesman, Raed al-Nadi was detained on Wednesday after Israeli soldiers found three pipe bombs and a mortar shell in his possession.

We considered this image for The Week in Pictures. The idea of the mother witnessing her son's detention was poignant. But, the execution of the image created some confusion. What does her expression mean? And what about the distracting elements, like the arm seeming to protrude from her back, and the large foreground of armored vehicle. Did we make the right choice to exclude it? See the week's images here: www.msnbc.com/twip
