I came across this image while working on the edit for The Week in Pictures. While it didn't make the final slide show, I think it's a beautifully handled portrait, reminiscent of old National Geographics I used to thumb through as a kid. I love it when a photographer can bring out that feeling.
A Kenyan park ranger (L) stands near residents who live on disputed land at the Mau forest, August, 26, 2008. A familiar Kenyan saga of corruption, illegal landgrabbing and the use of state resources to buy electoral votes has destroyed a quarter of the 400,000 hectare forest in the last decade with an impact that could be felt as far away as Egypt.
