A Brown Pelican sits covered in oil on the beach at East Grand Terre Island along the Louisiana coast on Thursday, June 3. Oil from the Deepwater Horizon has affected wildlife throughout the Gulf of Mexico.

Death sentence

Photographer Charlie Riedel came across some oil-soaked pelicans today and made what I think are some of the most tragic images to come out of this event. (Update on June 4, 2010: Click here to see more of Riedel's pictures, and to hear him describe his experience on East Grand Terre Island.)

I hope that someone is tallying and cataloging for permanant record, each and every animal killed, every creature injured, every job lost, every household ruined, every business closed, and every town devastated as a result of BP's criminal negligence. Their behavior is a new kind of evil to our naive eyes.

This breaks my heart. BP should be held on criminal charges NOW! They should be arrested immediately and all assets seized! Tony Hayward wants his life back? WE WANT OUR GULF BACK!

This Man does not know what wanting "life back" means. Look at generations (my children their future children and yours) who what their family heritage back. Take his company and lively hood away, see what he wants than....

I saw this on Nightly News just now too. It's sick, sad, heartbreaking..... I have already shed tears over this event. I heard the gusher may not be capped until Christmas! That's too long.

You can click here to see Kerry Sanders' report from NBC Nightly News mentioned by Jennifer above. Sanders reports that wildlife experts can't even tell the species of some of the doomed, oil-covered birds.

Every IDIOT who espoused "drill baby drill" should put in a weeks worth of time to clean up

our shores and our wild animals. Our eco-system has now experienced nearly total ruin...the

shores and animals are unique for the Gulf of Mexico area. Have you noticed that McCain and

                  Palin are lying low????

Just think of the other countries that are also at risk for ruination...Caribbean beaches and

tours via ship are also at high risk for ruination.

Toxins abound in the oil swill and affect our fisheries as well.

What a legacy for our future generations!!!

Our national, state and local governments need to support our American students

via special forgiveness loans and work-study programs for preservation of our

eco-systems and development of alternative energy sources. Our scientists and

engineers must be able to develop fail-safe products and not just...if it works it's OK.

This disaster represents widespread mass extinction. International corporations have been destroying ecosystems in poor countries for years and the horrors have been kept under wraps. But the Deepwater Horizon fiasco, especially coming on the heels of and in the same vicinity as Katrina, is apt to change the American public's qualitative thinking about environmentalism. Americans overwhelmingly HATE cruelty to animals, and photos such as this are a powerful wake-up call that basic tenets of contemporary life in the "advanced" countries are no longer valid.

The Gulf will look like David Crosby's kidneys before his resurrection if we don't get a handle on The Spill soon. (No hard thoughts here Dave, just The Phrog cutting the wheat from the chaff)

This just makes me cry...and then get furious. Sooo many innocent animals and people. How do we let this happen? When is enough enough?

BP should do everything possible to try and save every animal big or small from the mess that they caused!
