This is an excellent photograph. What's most surprising to me is that it's a handout photo from BP. How's that for transparency?

This BP handout image shows tar balls that washed ashore in Gulf Shores, Alabama on 07 June, 2010 as beach goers continue on enjoying the hot summer weather. BP engineers seeking to contain the worst oil spill in US history captured more than 14,800 barrels of crude from a blown-out well in the past 24 hours, the top US disaster official Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen said June 8.

It's payback time. An oil-soaked pelican took a dump.
It looks pretty benign. Just a few tarballs. Hence, the handout.
I think you're right, Russ.
funky dung left by a new waterfoul speices that evolved from the spill , the CHRONEY REPELICIAN.
Without the lead-in comments, this is an ambiguous image. The dark areas could represent a spilt hot fudge
sundae or some sort of alimentary accident.
Rocky Road Ice Cream.
I like how BP releases THIS photo..... instead of the thousands of others that show huge globs of goo choking the Gulf, choking the animals, and soon, choking the rest of us. In weeks to come, photos like this won't exist.
I had the same thought as Margaret and Russ... "Nothing to spoil your day folks, come on out to the beach, enjoy a day with the kids! Its just like watching out for Dog doo..." Spin posing as a public service.
I think that once this tar ball the size of Rhode island moves into the middle of tampa bay... crapping up the oceanfront property of the rich folks...you'll be surprised how creative they become in order to stop this leak.
BP knows that most of America is dumb, and most will see this photo and think, "Eh, it's not that bad" and then move on to other topics of importance to them (American Idol, finding a job, etc).
Well, I'm not dumb, BP. I'm gonna stay on your ass on this one, and I hope others will, too.
Looks like they might be giving handout photos as part of their efforts to prevent the media from covering the spill. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/10/us/10access.html?partner=rss&emc=rss
BP after all this time and all the money you've made of commen people it would seem like this problem should be fixed by now, get up off your butts and spend the money needed to stop this leak.
