This technique is a bit trite, but the picture is appropriate for today and the photographer did a good job of telling the story. A safe and happy Fourth of July to all!

Tom Dorsey / Salina Journal
An American flag is seen through rain drops on a windshield Sunday, July 4, in Salina, Kan. Rain canceled or postponed many Fourth of July events in the area Sunday.

Nothing trite about this photograph at all. The beauty of this shot lies in its layers, the small shots of patriotism, and the dreamy floating of the flags. Rather poetic and symbolic of an elusive freedom for some.

Katie,
You make the mistake that while the technique may be trite for a professional like yourself, it may be not for non-professionals, which is who you're writing for, right?
Katie said the "technique is a bit trite." She's right. The water droplets-as-lens technique is overused in photography. But she also complimented the photo. There is a distinction. I love the way the flag is shape-shifted in myriad ways. If that doesn't represent American society today, I don't know what does.
Trite? This is great!
WOW! Really amazing. I don't see where trite comes in. .
Well, I know I am pretty impressed. I would be patting myself on the back. Especially after the fireworks fiasco tonight. sigh.
If one views thousands of photographs daily, one know trite when he/she sees it.
I like this photo, not for the technique, which is trite, but for the symbolism and timing, being the Fourth of July. It fits for today and that is enough.
Lola, what happened that made the fireworks shoot a Fiasco?
Ugh. Trees. Which are lovely any other day of the week. But last night, being in the foreground, they kept pulling the focus. Also, the blasted marine layer rolled in at 4 o'clock. I had a lovely grey backdrop with all the smoke and cloud cover. A lot of my shots looked like a crab nebulae. I could sooner pass them off as NASA photos of space. I had better shots last year.

Lola, bummer.
Here in SB the Marine Layer cleared about 5:00, so the view from the patio at the party I attended was magnificent. However, I left my tripod and cameras at home, because lately I feel akward and in competition with all the iPhone and Blackberry shooters.
Yup, these folks are interesting, they shoot hand held from 2 miles out and I don't know what they get, if anything.
What sort of focus grid do you have, and did you shoot in manual focus or auto?
Bummer, ribbit, bummer.
I should have changed the focus to center focus and maybe the landscape setting. I used Manual for a while, but Lola kept refusing, telling me the subject was too dark. So I switched to the 'no flash' setting.
I did take off the polarizing filters as suggested. But still, a lot of it was out of my control. maybe next year. Or I'll just go to Sea World a lot this summer.
Katie: Maybe you mean "familiar" or "standard" rather than trite?
