Discovery / MSNBC.com story: Dead zone in Gulf linked to oil.

A dead crab and jelly fish were found in the surf near Longbeach, Mississippi on July 16, 2010. Hopes run high that BP"s capping of the oil leaking from the Deepwater Horizon in the Gulf of Mexico, will be successful and will prevent more oil from polluting the Gulf and the shorelines.

I've been following this blog for a few years now (must say, I enjoyed the old format more!), but haven't commented until now.
While I'm not an expert, and realize that this oil leak is a huge (putting it mildly) disaster, showing a photo of a dead jelly fish an crab with a tag line of "Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone" seems a bit sensational to me. I'm in NS, Canada. It's rare to go to a beach and not see a washed up jelly fish/ crab or two.
While I can't claim to understand what the people on the Gulf are going through, I do making my living in the fisheries and understand how hard and often uncertain a living it is at the best of times. I'm not questioning the disaster, but if the comments on the photo hadn't mentioned Mississippi, I would have thought it was just another beach shot.
i can't believe the ignorance of all the journalists covering the oil spill. there is a perfect solution to the oil spill cleanup. it is a microbe that eats the oil and renders it harmless! even the fish can eat the microbes happily. the environment is left pristine and small creatures return to it happily. it is made and produced by www.spillfighters.com which has a video of it. a texas oil spill used it and now texas makes all oil companies use it yet no one in any authority or connection to oil spill reporting mentions it whatsoever. what is going on? here we have a fantastic solution to the oil spill clean up and people are talking about stupid machines to suck up the oil. don't need them. just spray these microbes on the oil and god does the rest so to speak. why is it reporters and journalists have their head in the oil soaked sand? this is ridiculous!!! the video on the whole company is on youtube for crying out loud. this is not a joke or a hoax. the man's name is j. brent tuttle at jbrenttuttle@gmail.com and you can watch the dad burned video by just putting in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vfypuzx1tl i would like to see if i get any results with this. people seem against finding a true clean solution to the oil spill clean up. i have told this to feinstein, boxer, kucinich, the president, vice pres. four la times editors and many journalists and have seen no response, altho the email and video and website are easily available. unbelievable well one more try (sigh) dr. louis nitti jr. po box 124 bloomington ca 92316 (909) 822 1847 dctrlouis@att.net Upper case is not yelling.
Yes you are correct, one company here in Pasadena, TX had prepared a large inventory of these microbes for the Gulf Spill, but noooooooooooo, BP said no and it still sits in their warehouse, why??????? Politics, Politics, Politics. There is so much behind the public scene politcal BS all in the name of Profit. I worked in the municipality, public and private water/wastewater sector and was introduced to (at the time the 90's) a new application for water cleaning and purification, a microbe base application. I still wonder why it was not used. Texas, being an oil state, we used to call Texas' own RED ADAIR or BOOTS and KOOTS for well blowouts and they always successed. Why not now?
Hopefully Sponge Bob will survive this mess and continue to gaurd The Secret Sauce.
I have to agree Canatell, I like the old format better.
I also have wondered why BP has not used the oil eating microbes. It seems like the perfect answer to the problem
I'm pretty sure that BP started with the microbe but that the government stepped in because they were using too much. Hopefully they might be allowed to try it again now that there isn't a constant flow of oil back into the Gulf.
I really would never trust anyone to tell me that seafood from anywhere in that gulf is safe to eat. Ever.
BTW, those wonder-microbes need oxygen to eat oil. So either way, the gulf ends up as a dead zone, regardless who pays who, whose fault, whose political party gets the last word, etc.,...This is an ecological experiment, and I for one will not made a guinea-pig by my stupid, partisan gov't., or greedy big-oil.
The United States of America put men on the moon and returned them safely home in 1969, here it is 41 years later and a broken oil well continues to cause havoc, is something wrong with this picture????? How many more fk-ups do the American people have to endure due to either incompetent, greedy oil companies, or corrupt government officials?, and even after all the environmental damage done to our earth by these bastards, nobody has gone to jail for it!!!
let's put everybody in jail...we can afford it and God knows that is the abwer to all our problems!
