No protective gear. I'm glad to see this worker survived.

Barely visible in the thick sludge of crude oil, a worker pulls a struggling colleague to safety in the Chinese port of Dalian, Liaoning province. A massive explosion at a refinery as a tanker was off-loading its cargo Friday night resulted in a slick covering 71 square miles of the Yellow Sea.
Oil imports were still restricted at Dalian, which is home to a 19 million barrel strategic petroleum reserve, as the clean-up operation continued Tuesday.
The authorities have used some 23 tonnes of oil-eating bacteria and called in a total of 800 fishing boats to help some 24 specialist vessels. Dispersant chemicals and absorbent materials are also being deployed. The photo was released Tuesday by environmental group Greenpeace.

The workers were caught in just some of the 1,500 tons of crude which spilled into the sea following an attempt to fix an underwater pump. Chinese officials said a third of the oil had been collected and they expect to resume oil imports by the end of the week.

The two workers, covered head-to-toe in oil, are helped to the shore from a boat by rescuers. No-one was injured in the explosion at the refinery, although the subsequent fire raged for 15 hours. Dalian's Xingang oil port is one of China's four state storage bases currently in operation. It is also a transfer spot for two major refineries, Dalian Petrochemical Corp and WEPEC, both operated by PetroChina with a combined processing capacity of 600,000 barrels per day.

One of the oiled workers tries to help his colleague, who appears to have collapsed following his ordeal in the slick. Several miles of floating booms have been deployed in the area in an effort to contain the oil. Already, questions are being asked about the cost and who is to blame.
"It's not going to be a major cost in the big scheme of things. It's going to be in the tens of millions of dollars, not tens of billions of dollars," said David Johnson at RBS, who estimated the cost at $50 million. "The question is, who owns the oil in the tanker and whether the oil is insured. But some of them will have to pay the clean-up costs. The question is, who's going to be liable? It's like the BP story -- whose fault is it?"

OMG - this picture is awful - just think what those poor animals are suffering through in the Gulf. Also thought about when people use to be tarred and feathered - Yuck, Yuck, Yuck
It makes me laugh to hear everone talk about how WE are destroying the earth. let me say this, WE will never be able to destroy the earth!!!! we are just a small blip compaired to the age of the earth. If you think WE can destroy anything, you need to read the papers about the Flooding, Earth Quakes, and everthing else. We are only here "Using" what the earth has to offer, we have no control over the wether or the way the earth moves... the earth will take care of its self. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! have you ever tried to stop the rain, a flood, a tornado??? it cant be done.
And for those of you who believe that "WE" have any chance of destroying the earth, your kind of ignorance cannot be helped.
!t's all propaganda.... stop following!! start leading!!! help your fellow man, be a good neighbor, be a good husand, be a good wife.. be a good person. these are the things that will help us save this earth. Like the people in the picture, be good to your fellow man!!! that is what makes this earth a good place to live!
It makes me laugh to read this! How can you deny the effects we are having on this planet? Did you know there are still lingering effects from the Exxon-Valdez oil spill on mammal, bird, and fish populations (that happened 21 years ago)? Did you know there are lingering effects from the chemicals (i.e., agent orange) we used on the landscape in Vietnam on both Vietnamese and American people (~40 years ago)? Did you know there are lingering effects from the a-bombs we dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (65 years ago)? To think we are not having an effect on this planet from the chemicals we use, the weapons we deploy, and the landscape modification we perform is an ignorant, uninformed, head-up-the-ass, head-in-the-sand viewpoint. Go back to reading your Bible, and just hope that God will destroy us before we destroy this planet! Moron.
you need to read the bible........ dont be lovers of this earth...notw
Is there a difference between literally destroying the earth and destroying the earth for human habitation? Sure. Does that differentiation matter to us? Nope.
Chuck, I don't think you understand what environmentalists are saying. Since our rule of this planet we've made a lot of our fresh water undrinkable, we poisoned our rain, killed off entire species, mowed down the forests that support us, and irradiated our air. We may not destroy the floating rock in space we call erth, but we are MORE than capable of destroying the life on it's surface.
But there is one thing you are absolutely correct about, we do need to come together, put aside our lust for material things, make responsible decisions based on what is right as opposed to what is profitable.
And rf101, you need to do a re-read yourself. It was our job to tend the garden, not destroy it in the persuit of greed.
Your message shows great ignorance, and you seem to be the person deceive by the industry propaganda “that we are to small to destroy this planet” that is bull @!$%#. Have you ever take a look at crude plant how they pump up crude day and night until that thing gets dry and them move to another well to do the same thing? Have you seen the effects of deforestation? And the effect on the fauna? Man may not be powerful physically as to with its own hands destroy the earth but the technology and methods we have created have the power to destroy our planet. The corporations have the best interest to tell you that such things is impossible and you are so stupid as to believe that.
MalcolmN, thank you for a voice of reason. It is unfortunate that those who are at the extreme end of both poles are the ones who seem to speak out the most while what I believe to be the vast majority of reasonable people sit by quietly.
That second picture is amazing. It's like the poor guy is being sucked into the earth (I know it's the ocean, it's just how it looks)
I agree it does look like he is being sucked into the earth. God Bless both men did not lose their lives from this tragedy.
We're seeing some serious sh*t in 2010. I have been laughing at all the 2012 doomsday crap but I gotta tell ya...I'm starting to think maybe it's a self fulfilling prophecy. How much more can this globe take?
That's an interesting thought. It seems I remember the "rivers turning to blood" from church. Ever noticed the Guld spill from above? How red it is? I don't think it necessarily means doomsday, maybe just a major change that no one could prepare for.
I believe there may be something to this 2012 business. We have seriously messed up this planet and continue to do so. Earth has had enough and will probably save herself, from us......mankind might not be so lucky.
The Bible says about the last days but also says that God is not going to let the people destroy the Earth because he made it to human being live in it forever. You can verify in your Bible Revelation 12:18 & Isaiah 45:18. I learned a lot to not fear studying the the Bible and information with the Bible as a base. You can go to watchtower.org, it's totally free. (Sorry if something is write wrong, my fist language is Spanish)
the verses you give here is not even in the bible Revelation 12 ends with vers 17 and Isaiah 45:18 read:
For this is what the LORD says—
he who created the heavens,
he is God;
he who fashioned and made the earth,
he founded it;
he did not create it to be empty,
but formed it to be inhabited—
he says:
"I am the LORD,
and there is no other. (NIV)
Sorry about that is Revelation 11:18 where says: "But the nations became wrathful, and your own wrath came, and the appointed time for the dead to be judged, and to give [their] reward to your slaves the prophets and to the holy ones and to those fearing your name, the small and the great, and to bring to ruin those ruining the earth.” And the one that you write its saying that the Lord mea the earth with a purpose and being honest today the human being is not living like God want at the begining.
Wow. Amazing pictures. And some brave soul jumped in after him to rescue him! I hope both are doing well.
I think between this & BP the after math will be harder to deal w/ then any of us expect,
This is really sad...........God help us all..............Does any know anything about this OIL EATING BACTERIA? is it man made. China scares me with these sort of things.
There are several types of oil-eating microbes; some are naturally occurring, others are lab-grown. These could indeed be a valuable asset in dealing with oil spills. Unfortunately, the lab-grown ones do not last long in real world conditions, and there is some fear about whether rapidly multiplying bacterium (such as these) might deplete oxygen in the water required by other organisms.
These pictures are heartbreaking, we have seen this in the animals, foul, fish and our wetlands, our Eco system is being ruined in the name of FINANCIAL PROFIT. I pray these guys will be OK, but from what has happened here, the cleanup crews are beginning to show signs of various illnesses. BP is the most careless, uncaring, huge lairs, and could care less about any land, sea or humankind effects as long as they make a profit. Just five years ago, our neighbors in Texas City, TX, BP Chemical Plant had a huge explosion, killing several workers, what was BP reaction? Fights in court not to have to pay the families of the deceased. This is not the first time in dealing with BP, I wonder how many lawsuits have been filed against BP for their carelessness and planned denials.
I am a native Texan, live in Galveston, TX. For 93+ days and counting we have been watching our neighbors in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida praying that THIS HORRIFIC OIL SPILL IN OUR GULF OF MEXICO will be capped soon. We watch and worry that our Texas sshore's will also be effected, which it was. PRAISE GOD, TEXAS GOT ONLY A SMALL AMOUNT (so far). I agree with the opinion of most people, is the end near? We are not to know when the world will end, per God's instruction, "just be ready" to ascend to glory and see if our name is written in The Lambs Book of Life. I think the movie 2012 has put many people in a state of realization. Have you noticed how many actors, late show host, and people in general actually are discussing "THE END", see all these email replys. Look at all the recently, just in DC four days ago, never has happen in this area I don't believe, they are happening everywhere through out our states. The Hatti quake, the large volcanic eruption in Iceland that halted international air travel, and a constant catastrophic, natural and man made one of a kind global destruction's of our Earth. Just my opinion, God Bless to All.
Initially it looked like a still from an old Japenese horror film (Yes I know it's China) but there was an old 1970's Godzilla film that dealt w/air and water pollution. And the slick looks like the 'monster' in the movie. hmmmmmmmmmmmm....prophecy? I pray the two workers survive.
The Godzilla movie about pollution was, Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster from 1972. I think there was a scene of people covered with oil or some kind of pollution.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067148/
oh my christ!! this is bad, Florida take note, it could have been this bad.
Florida? How about any country who borders water fed by the sea and ocean? Oh, yea, that covers any country with a shore! This oil slick, from the Gulf Of Mexico and the Yellow Sea, will affect every coast line on the Earth. They can claim they have cleaned it all up (eventually) but it will still cause the "Dead Zones" in the water and along the shore lines. Yea, this stuff happens naturally, and nature can fix it when it does. But this was not natural. We did this. How does nature fight back against us when we are destroying the Earth? She will figure something out. We best duck when the time comes. Something about feces and a fan comes to mind.
To the men in these pictures, please report how it feels to nearly drown in this man-made mess so that those higher up can know how our wildlife feels. I'm sure they could give a sh*t less, but whatever may help can't hurt.
That's one heck of a colleague. I hope they reward him. It's not like the camera man threw them a rope or anything.
Reminds me of an old Bobcat Goldthwait joke: "If you see me getting my ass kicked by the police, put down the video camera and come help me!"
Just more Oil, to ruin our Ocean. Considering that all of our Oceans and Seas are really just one giant body of water, with different names. The Gulf and now the Yellow Sea, what a pity. This beautiful Green and Blue planet, might as well be painted Black and brown in the future. If there is a future
That is some seriously scary footage....I hope the planet can survive all this
sparrow1
Oh my christ!! this is bad, Florida take note, it could have been this bad.
This is nothing compared to the Gulf, we just don't have the pics like these, because most of the oil is in the wetlands and marshes, where people do not go.
This is appauling!! Words cannot express my disappointment in this country and in the oil industry. Protcols and procedures should be implemented in case of any situation such as this. Just not sure what to do or where to go anymore.
H.
Is anyone going to tell me that carbon based fuels are not a dirty mess that is going to kill this planet for all animals and humans???
We running straight toward the cliff where our quality of life is in serious jeopardy! Mining the earth in this relentless fashion is not a safe process, no matter what some mining or oil executive tells us, period!
Our future is not down some hole, but it going to be found by looking up to the sky...
from a photography point of view, it is an amazing picture. from a human point of view, it is horrific to see how the normally blue ocean can be transformed by humans in an instance. we reap what we sow, i guess.
seriously?
At least the men knew what they were in; the animals don't have a clue what happened to their home. Hope someone interviews the drowning man so people who care only about profit understand the inhumane treatment of wildlife they are responsible for in the Gulf, however; people who care only about profit are psychopaths so probably don't care about human life either.
I think this is just the beginning of the end. JC is coming. Be prepared spiritually. Pray hard.
Praying won't do a dang thing. Begin living your life a little more greener, contribute to the solution of our global ecology. We live here on borrowed time. Don't you deisre to leave the earth better for your children, and theirs?
You can pray all you want, but if you are not involved with any type of community effort to help clean up this planet...well.....good luck to ya and that "Jesus" thing.
How would Jesus feel if he saw what we are doing to the lifeforms on this world and it's beautiful oceans?? Huh? Got an answer that is not scripture???
Didn't think so.
Jesus isn't going to come here and clean up the horrific mess that we have placed upon this planet.....
Herewegoagain, I suppose you're going to tell us this happened b/c the Chinese are not Christians?
Worldly things will rust, rot and fade. But our fate and life with Jesus Christ will live on forever.
Peter 1:7 (Whole Chapter)
That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:
Nope bassicdave, that's not the point.
You can believe in what ever spiritual deity you desire. My point is, be a part of the solution, not the problem. Don't sit here and whine and "pray"...get out and do something to heal our world - for our OWN survival.
I go out with three community groups and pick up trash, help with an animal shelter, and also work with a group to help clean up our neighborhood, and increase awareness about lessening your utility bills and relying more on energy efficiency.
I also try to support local farmers and farmers markets....as well as family owned business.
Isn't that what a good Christian would do....besides just sitting in their chair waiting for the second coming of Jesus to come and clean it up or take his soul to "heaven?"
That's my point.
From a non-scriptural point of view, I'm sure that he would be saddened, much as anyone else who cares about the Earth and what happens to it.
As far as scripture is concerned, God does promise to bring to ruin, those ruining the earth at Revelation 11:18. Until that time, we are still responsible for caring for the Earth in the best way possible.
I do civil engineering design and have my own small business. I support clean energy. But who I am is not important. What we do is what define us. There are millions of people who don't believe in Christ and need some saving before it is too late. A lot of people don't believe in God. We should ask ourself if we die tomorrow, are we ready to face God without knowing him?
O, yes He is! Make no mistake abvout that!....No , no cleaning the mess.... Only making all things new.
excuse me while I go kill a chicken in the backyard and read it's entrails to decide if I should leave the house today.
Why does everyone have to be such a freakin' zealot? Why can't you comment without bringing your deity into it?
Tim & hope51:
You took the words right out of my mouth.
mj, let the chicken wait while you read the answer to your question....
It's not because we're "zealots" as you call us, but because we can't separate the fact that God, the creator of all that was, is, and ever shall be is so intertwined in/with our human existence, that it would be impossible to exclude Him. Just because you don't believe that He is, it doesn't change the fact that He is God with whom we all have to do and will account to.
Matthew 24:34"Verily I say unto you, This generation shall not pass, till all these things be fulfilled."
There you go, nutjobs. Jesus claimed no one knew of the second coming, but he told his disciples it would be before they had all died. And guess what... it didn't happen. Well, unless there is a really old disciple running around somewhere. Maybe he's a vampire.
And so now, here we are, 2000 years later, after iteration upon iteration of folks claiming we better be ready for Jesus to come back, (I bet it was a real show stopper in the dark ages), with some clueless zealots ignoring our planet at our peril whilst driving the he!! out of their SUVs to church.
That is true Ken nobody knows when the end will come. My church told me it is this generation because the revelations where pointng it at this generation. Only God knows at what time and day it will happen. But it is always good to be prepared spiritually before it's too late.
1 Chronicles 15:12 (Whole Chapter)
And said unto them, Ye are the chief of the fathers of the Levites: sanctify yourselves, both ye and your brethren, that ye may bring up the ark of the LORD God of Israel unto the place that I have prepared for it.
Hey, anyone else take time to read the article? I hear its about an oil spill ... why are you guys talking about religion? :P just wondering
Cause I was looking at the pictures and thinking wow ... we should probably make an effort and help clean it up without resorting to, say money to donate. Maybe jobs around the world should be centered around these ideas (don't know if this would EVER work just an idea)
1. supply food for people around the planet to help make efforts in saving the planet
2. no more supplying wars while the planet everyone seems so dire to fight for (for reasons I still don't know why we're actually fighting and I know I'm going to get like 10 different answers and then people will start argueing and blaaaaah please avoid that XD) but take them out and stop them from killing each other and start a new focus of helping clean up the planet
3. and everyone just go somewhere on the planet and help I don't understand why we're all countries and everything's off limits here if you were born there and whatever we all have to live on the same spinning rock whats so bad about keeping it together and spinning and not caked in oil and lacking resources and dieing from environmental damage and full of meaningless warring over ... whatever the crud it is we're warring over.
i dunno maybe I'm a dreamer >.> well this dream is nice I wish people could come join me here XD I like it much better than where this nightmares going!
Ken, before you make hasty claims of what you know and understand, it would be wiser for you just to keep quiet, because you don't certainly know what you ought to know.
The time will pass and prove who is the wise or the fool, and you have neither authority nor credentials to call any of us "nut jobs". Your smart alecky remarks show only that you don't understand the things we're talking about ..... But we definitely know and understand what we're talking about.
Are you LDS?
If you're asking me, no, I'm not..
Ken in FL, You obviously can't read very well. It is talking about generation of the time around the second coming, not the generation of the apostles. Did you pass your English courses in college or did you use Cliff notes to get you through? You obviously took the word of some other ignorant person and are using it on others if you claim you are not ignorant. Sounds like you got the edited version of Matthew 24, like the Shirley Sherrod firing from the USDA. Taken out of context.
Who says Chinese guys can't swim?
I just saw 2012 and Law Abiding Citizen over the weekend. if those shows don't shock you into "This is coming if we don't change our ways, NOW." mode...I don't know what will. We all seem to be Ostriches and figuratively hide our head in the sand. If it's not happening to me...then it can't be happening...tell me when it's over. This is OUR fault...everyone who is not commited to changing the way we do things, use and abuse our resources, people, nature. speak up!
As soon as all of the prayer people are done praying, maybe they should get off their asses and go DO something for their communities.
Keith,
What makes you think that those of you who are not praying are doing more then we're?
Stereotyping tells a lot about the one who's doing it, mainly that his/her vision of reality is not very clear and balanced, therefore making him/her unqualified to make statements as you did!
This is horrifying. I hope this is shared the world over.
One beautiful moment though - the man who went in after his colleague. A TRUE hero. Bless them both.
.....now put yourself in the skin of dolphins, whales or any or all other animal life as they navigate through this ocean of toxic oil in the gulf. This is not acceptable and it is time for change!
I hope we all remember these pictures the next time we are about to hop in our cars for a short trip that can be made by foot or by bike.
The Yellow Sea becomes the Black Sea. I hope they have Dawn dishwashing liquid to wash off the guy who fell into it.
