A polar bear cub appears to enjoy the artificial snow in the Moscow Zoo on July 28, 2010. Temperatures have reached more than 95° degrees for the last three weeks in the central regions of Russia.

Polar bear in Moscow

It is a small sin for photographers and picture editors to ascribe human attributes to animal behavior, but it’s difficult to believe that this cub isn’t happy and relieved to be face planted in the snow.

I understand the sin of personifying or humanizing animal behavior. But joy, sorrow, caring aren't exclusive to humans.

And I do see your point in this photo. As it has been captured, it appears he/she has a blissful expression on his face as he frollicks in the snow. Especially given how hot it's been in Russia these last weeks. You can almost see the thought bubble over it's head, "I'm so happy. Thank you thank you thank you."

However, for all we know about polar bear emotion, he could just be rubbing bird poop out of his fur. Not that polar bears would necessarily care about bird poop in their fur.

"OOOOH YEA, man this is great, but I shouldn't have had that last mackeral martini last night......"

      • Heat waves in Russia are a bad sign-95 degrees!
      • Polar Bears need cool things because they are fat and furry.
      • Just wait until we need artificial ice floes.

"I'm so happy. Thank you thank you thank you"

If anyone really wonders, read When Elephants Weep: The Emotional Lives of Animals by Masson and McCarthy. Very interesting read.
