Containers fall from the deck of the damaged cargo ship MSC Chitra in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai, India on Monday, Aug. 9. A defense ministry spokesman said the Indian Coast Guard was trying to contain oil from the badly-listing ship that collided with another vessel. Some 200 containers fell from the ship.

I agree totally. These ships are HUGE! How can you possibly not realize that another one is near you? Some ship captains are going to be in BIG trouble.

More likely incompetence, unfortunately. Probably something that could have been prevented, with a little more attention to detail.

Wow, just the thought of it gives me chills. I can't imagine all the stuff that just ended up in the ocean. I hope no one was truly hurt.

Relax, Carrie, that ship was loaded with the little red dots that go between the eyes of the people of India. It is bad that the people of India will have to go redspotless for a few weeks. That ship's cargo in the ocean is the equivilent of passing gas in a tornado. To go into fits everytime a ship sinks seems to be really silly.

What a weak minded, insulting, arrogant A**hole you are. You quite evidently cannot be a for-real person. To insult a person just because you yourself do not follow or believe in their customs is just plain old ignorant. The world is made up of thousands of diverse nationalities that all have different customs that they follow. For anyone that this idiot has insulted, I apologize, because they won't. One Planet, One People.

As for the cargo of the ship; you couldn't be more wrong. There are several chemicals that do exist that if I would spill one quart of it (32 measly ounces) within, lets say 15-miles from your house, you would become violently ill and start puking your guts out. One of my favorites to use to prove my point is found in the Merck Manual (listed under chemical compositions). In a structure the size of the Astrodome, with circulation fans running, one or two drops placed at center field on the 50, will cause a reaction to a person sitting at the farthest reach in the dome within seconds (as soon as the air movement can deliver it to them).

Almost Forgot --- The quart of liquid would be poured into a baking dish so there would be surface area for the breeze to pick up the vapors and so that the liquid does not just penetrate the ground.

It was a shipping accident for God's sake! It's not a political or societal issue. Shipping accidents have been taking place since man invented boats thousands of years ago - long before there was an America. Geeez Loueeeze, can't you people just take things for what they are and leave your politics at home ??

Excuse me, this was not an accident, but a careless mistake. An accident is something you can't avoid and clearly this was something that could have been avoided, just like the election of Obama Hood and his merry men.

              Weiser, your way off base.

              1. An accident is "...an undesirable or unfortunate happening that occurs unintentionally..."

              2. No one here cares about your political views of Obama, or anything else. Try to stay on topic, and maybe take a vocabulary lesson.

Weiser --- I'm not a fan of Obama either BUT, like ppl are saying here...this is NOT a political issue.

How do you know that this could have been avoided? I've been aboard ships larger than this one and rouge waves threw us into a 30-degree pitch.

On a funny side...do you think that maybe they were insured under Allstate's Accident Forgivness Program?

Not Bushes fault but emblematic of the Bush economy, sinking fast with vast government bailouts of greedy banking sector in place when inherited and won't be fixed quickly -- obviously.

Economy probably headed in right direction (at least a better direction) but damage from 8 years of Republican rule won't be fixed overnight.

@ Cameron Yeah it was all the greedy banks fault for trying to make money, Greedy financially retarded borrowers didnt have any blame in getting more house then they could afford, I mean seriously who actually goes by a budget so they will know how much they can afford each month for rent.

Its not like people would look to see what the mortgage payment would be when the rate reset and determine if they could afford it.

Yeah its all the banks fault and not govts for forcing banks to lend to lower income families regardless if they could afford it.

After all its the Banks job to make sure that borrowers have financial responsibility.

(dont pick and choose who is at fault it took a number of factors to screw out economy it wasnt just the banks)

I understand that Obama, Pelosi & Reid are quickly drafting up legislation to make it illegal for two ships to collide in the ocean as we speak. Of course it will be necessary to raise the taxes on the wealthy to cover the costs for Greenpeace to patrol the oceans. The world will be safer any moment now.

Can I be on the new Obama commission to outlaw all shipwrecks. And who said Bush vetoed the dem bills 2006-2008? That is the problem, Bush did not veto what he should have vetoed in the dem's spending bills. Bush practically never used the veto the whole eight yearsof his administration.

If I was going to build millions of something, why would I want to build it in America when I can build it somewhere else for a fraction of the cost? If I had to build in in America there are a few states not to use (like California) because the cost of building something there is so much higher than most other states. Why do you think most of the aerospace companies left California or some left the country?

Looks like the cargo ship was not at fault because the anchor is down.

This could have just as easily been an oil tanker. Can't people see what is right in front of their eyes. This is unbelievable.

Hopefully not a bunch of illegal Chinese stowaways. Probably not, they tend to come in through Vancouver.

Why are we talking about Democrats and Republicans???? All of this bashing is tearing our country apart much more than the environment is being destroyed. Why not keep comments pertinent to the story!
