Containers fall from the deck of the damaged cargo ship MSC Chitra in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Mumbai, India on Monday, Aug. 9. A defense ministry spokesman said the Indian Coast Guard was trying to contain oil from the badly-listing ship that collided with another vessel. Some 200 containers fell from the ship.

I know what happened!

Bush rented a submarine and personally torpedoes both ships and they consequently collided!

Case closed!

My new GPS was on that ship - do you think they'll find it?

Well, the fish, that ordered all of that cargo, will be happy to see that it's going to arrive on time.

Must have collided with a Black Swan. And....OMG....many of those containers were filled with boxes of

Shrewsburys desperately needed by the Frogs for Honest Photography Society!

I told them again and again NOT to load all the containers on the left side. But would they listen?

Most of the folks on this board would load them all on the RIGHT side, needless to say.

But seriously, what an incredible photo!

I managed an international ocean transportation program for a dozen years, and was in the shipping business for over twenty, during which time one of the things I sold was marine insurance, and just for this specific scenario. (Beneficial Cargo Owners, be warned. This is going to be gory.) Note: I am NOT affiliated, nor do I know anyone connected to, the insurance business.

Because of a clause in every Bill of Lading called "General Average," the owners of freight on that vessel will have to pay the vessel owners for the loss of the ship, AND absorb the loss of their merchandise also. This goes back to the days of the pirates, and not the Somali ones either.

Most cargo owners DO NOT carry All-Risk Marine Insurance, which is cheap protection against things like this, your container being dropped from a gantry crane at the pier, going overboard, etc.

I've been out of the transportation business for about a dozen years now, and boy-oh-boy the General Average Notices are gonna go out to everyone and his mother who had freight, no matter how little, on board that ship. Everyone who had freight on that ship is going to have to compensate the steamship owners because, in theory, the ship would not be out there if they didn't have cargo, so it's their fault.

Pretty screwed up, ain't it? The moral of this story: If you import or export, ALWAYS buy all-risks cargo insurance. Yeah, insurance companies are awful institutions, but in this case they could save your business from going under with the ship.

Having worked for several container companies the sight of this ship tipping and then capsizing is shocking. I've seen these ships begin tipping and getting them righted is a major and delicate task because when they finally reach the point of no return they go quickly. Retrieving the containers is a big issue as well because they will float around at sea for years. A Sealand ship picked up a floating 20 foot container with cargo still in it that had been washed off a Maresk ship during a heavy storm 14 months earlier. These ships are huge, Hyundai has super cargo ships that carry nearly twice the containers a normal container ship will so it does seem strange that these two vessels didn't see one another before the collision. I would really like to be a fly on the wall at this operations meeting!!! I would like to compliment the photographer for these photos, great shots of a unusual incident that is seldom seen while transpiring because when it starts happening the ship will sink quickly. Sorry state of events really.

Warren, great explanation on cargo insurance, and very true.

......And as the boat began to list a familiar chorus rang out..."Don't rock the boat, Dont tip the boat over...."

To all the people that keep talking about our environment-- Do you really think they meant to sink their own ship?? Also unless you live in a cave and only drink and eat off the things around you, you too are a part of the whole" environmental contributor " of the down fall. (morons) Where do you think the timber came from on your house and all the materials needed to put electricity and plumbing in it also?? (morons) Not to mention the computer your typing at to converse about the news you have seen? (morons)

Bill, it happens everytime someone pi$$es in the ocean. Every incident is the downfall of mankind, and everyone should stop purchasing oil, food, cruises, cars, etc. As if that is the answer to all of a crowded earth's problems.

Think about it this way, it will be some time before those systems are perfected. And by the way, with all this aggression and anger between us countries, i agree with number, he thinks the end will lead to a nuclear whiteout, from ignorant people as you. i'm only 14, you may talk about me for being 14. But i'm sorry to say, war will take over, aggression will be the end of what you call, a utopia society. We may have a government, but other countries don't. Don't think your above anyone else because you live in a country with a government.

What was it? "I'm NOT going down with the ship". Captain of the Exxon Valdiz probably said the same thing........or is someone gonna try to blame it on a rogue iceburg? WTF? Buzz-1016112 had a valid point. With all the tech, how is this possible outside of ignorance.

Incredible...this is a great artificial reef in the making.  Think about it, without all these ships sinking, divers wouldn't have anywhere to vacation and little fishies would go extinct due to lack of reefs.  So many problems solved with one sinking ship.  Whew!
