Afghan singer Farhad Darya performs during a concert for Afghan women to mark International Peace Day, in Kabul, Afghanistan, 22 September 2010. Farhad 'Darya' Nasher is an Afghan-American singer and composer, and Good Will and Peace Ambassador for Afghanistan to the United Nations. During the Taliban regime, music was banned across the country as it was considered un-Islamic.

Excited fans in Afghanistan

This picture stood out in happy contrast from the many images of war that we get from Afghanistan, though a bomb went off at the site shortly after the concert ended, injuring 13 people.

Though I'm not a fan of a lot of modern artists, I can't imagine music in general being banned.

        Rodney and George,

What's with the hatin'? These are completely regular Afgani teenagers, enjoying the closest thing to pop culture which currently exists in their country. There's no call for your negative attitude.

That's the way I like it. If all terrorist muslims start doing this we may be closer to world peace.

I'm not for making little Americans out of the rest of the world, but within Afghan frame of reference, they should be free to enjoy the music that they like. The Taliban is so hard up for control that they miss the big picture. They need to just go away and leave the sandbox to those that know how to live as free people.

Does this mean the Ol' Dirty Bastard and Eminem can't perform in Kabul? Outrageous!

The problem with Americans, especially the ones commenting here, is they are ignorant of Afghanistan, the Afghan 'culture', Islam, understanding the true tenets of Islam, and anything else in between. The article is about Farhad Darya (who Im betting a lot of you don't even know) throwing a concert, and the the story is somehow linked to the Taliban, Islam, and hijabs.  Unless its about NASCAR or Justin Bieber, (some) American's just will never get it.......ever.

This picture is refreshing. We seldom see positive images coming out of Afghanistan. Just wish the Taliban and other terrorists would pack up and go live in the mountains, and leave Afghan moderates to live in peace. Then our troops could come home, and the people of both countries would be happy.

Oz from Portland puts down Americans for not understanding Islam.

We understand Islam as a religion that is not able to withstand criticism by Americans who enjoy freedom of speech and opinion. As an agnostic I am at least able to respect Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism or even Scientology for their ability to accept criticism and doubters in a healthy manner. It seems that Islam suffers a severe weakness if cannot allow challenges and be able to defend itself without threats of death to the doubter.

It may be the first of the world's great religions to die because of this weakness.
