People reach out to catch children's books, donated by the Cuban government, as they are distributed in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, on Saturday Oct. 2. Most of the children living in camps set up for the January earthquake victims will not attend classes when public schools re-open Monday due to their economical situation.

Struggling to learn

It is so unfortunate, but understandable, as survival comes first, that immediate needs would squeeze out something as important as education which could provide Haiti's children with long-term gains.

Hungry for food, desperate for shelter, but still desiring knowledge. All American kids should view this and their parents should think twice before buying the next video game or console and instead make a contribution to these unfortunate ones in their kid's name.

What a load of crap javadanny!!   The U.S. gives billions of dollars a year to these backwards arse countries instead of giving those dollars to the homeless and underprivileged in our country.   We can't help everyone in the world!  Actually, most of them HATE YOU, even though you give and give and give!!  TAKE CARE OF THE U.S. before ever giving a dime!  What if your future children will be in dire straits and dollars and aid go to a backwards arse country before helping your grandchildren instead???

I guess the assinine hollywood stars couldn't find any U.S. children to adopt, so they had to go "WorldWide".   That is why those idiots support the OBama administration!

Craving education, or just free stuff tossed from a truck?

Lets hope its craving education and knowledge. I agree javadanny about his video game comment. My kids could sit and play video games for hours, but tell them to read a book and its like pulling teeth. But I agree w/ daninarlington. I am tired of Americans looking out for other countries first and our country second. I would love for Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt to go into a foster home w/ teenage kids that have been bounced around for years and explain why they adopted their kids from other countries. TAKE CARE OF OUR OWN FIRST!
