It's true, at least from what we have seen in Indiana, that the Tea Party is mostly made up of white folks. But there are people of color involved -- and some, like Emery McClendon, are in central organizational roles. (We'll come back to him in a future post). Other non-white people are attending, exploring, hovering around the edges to compare what is being said to what they believe.
"Exploring" would describe Ebony and Hursel Williams, who were seated near the back of the small crowd at a rally on Saturday in Indianapolis where Tea Party and related groups were protesting the health care package. The Indianapolis high-tech couple is questioning the beliefs they long held true. They have come, says Ebony, out of a sense that it is their Christian duty to explore and stand up for what is right.
"We've often been hoodwinked," says Hursel. "Things are often not as we were raised to believe," he adds, without being specific.
The Williams clap and nod as the speakers at the event emphasize the Christian foundations of the United States, and the speakers' interpretation of the Constitution.
"Constitutionalists stand for the little man and for what Christ stands for -- to be treated fairly, equally," says Hursel.
And about the charges of racism that surround the Tea Party movement, this is what he had to say:
"I had a preconceived notion (that they were racist)," says Hursel. "I have felt nothing but love and talk about Christ." He adds: "I would bring my children to this."
To be clear, Ebony and Hursel did not become card-carrying members of the Tea Party on Saturday. But they see possibilities.
"I would like to see it cause an awakening for people ... that people will seek truth," says Hursel.

The Liberal Left wants and needs racism to be the focal point of almost every issue. It empowers them much the same as it has benefited Reverends Sharpton and Jackson over the years making them both very wealthy in the process by extorting money through carefully orchestrated media threats of boycotts and picketing. Thank God that someone finally published an article which truly represents what is going on in America. The vast majority of whites, blacks, Asians and Latinos don't hate each other as the Left contends. Yes, you can show the world a handful of white, black, brown, yellow and green bigots but we can also see the droves of Americans who have grown up to despise racism and have very little tolerance for it. Preaching and teaching hate works both ways and the days of the Liberal Left dividing this country appears to be coming to an end! It just can't come soon enough!

I agree, the vast majority of Americans (blacks, Asians, Native Indians, and Latinos) don't hate each other. Unscrupulous political candidates promote racism and hate to persuade us to donate to their campaign of hate and division. I yet do not understand why 20 or 30 percent of American Christians give their money and their time to politicians that only seek their own wellbeing at the expense of others.
We must merge the decent "Conservatives" with those those "Liberals"who defend individual liberty to overcome division and failure in America.

You just don't get it and you never will. The real conflict in America is not one of race, its between the ultra rich and the rest of us. There is a reason you never hear anyone on the "right" and hardly anyone on the "left" talk extensively about income disparity, and that reason is the entrenched interest of the ultra wealthy. I believe that in America it should get harder to get wealthy past a certain point. That would limit the incredible influence of lobbyists, bought and paid for politicians, large corporate interests and news networks that keep the "vast majority" of us stupid, scared, angry and divided against one another all for the benefit of the rich and powerful. Crushing generational poverty, lack of quality education, and a skewed and dishonest narrative from every politician you hear are the real problems we face, not some bogeyman from the left or right. Reading the more liberal posts today provide some insight into their mindset. Rather than being open minded and tolerant, they are close minded and intolerant.
Are there racists in the Tea Party? Certainly. Just as their are racists in both major parties, and every other political party. Racism is a part of th discourse, but it doesn't have to be a major influencer.
My take away from this couple was that they are open minded, they sound kind of conservative, at least in some core values, and they didn't let the fringe elements keep them from discovering people of like mind.
If name calling and bigotry are the best the fringe left has to offer, they will forever be fringe, and likely will be completely marginalized as they should be.
Ask yourself this question. If the government gave everyone in the US a million dollars would it be worth a million dollars? When you finally come to the reality of the answer, you will have discovered the meaninglessness of your argument. Income disparity has nothing to do with Government handouts or the value of money. My point was that over a certain point of excessive wealth in this country it gets a lot easier to keep getting wealthier... it really is a slippery slope once you can afford to pay experts to look after your money, hide it in tax shelters and so forth. Capitalism is supposed to be about the best reaching the top in spite of each step of the way getting harder... and yes some don't make it because they were not born into ideal circumstances of multigenerational wealth/education like perhaps you were. But I'm sure, from your evasive comments some meager amount of fairness in the tax code to place a heavier burden on those that can bear it would just be some fearsome socialist, communist thing to you. It seems like what you want is government to work only for you-- and anything or anyone else, is something expendable--fat to be cut away because it doesn't serve your selfish world view. But what I WILL say is that I am currently in my 5th year of college, quite intelligent, & not very easy at all to fool.
And oh yeah .... I'm also quite religious & generally a conservative Republican, although I do pride myself on voting for whom I believe to be the BEST choice, rather than along party lines. My entire 5 years of college have been at the same university, and will be for 1 more year. I have a very decent understanding of the general feelings of my 16,000+ fellow students.
A significant percentage of them share the same beliefs as I do .... or in other words, exactly opposite of what you claim. And just to clarify this point, before anyone jumps in with the comment, this university is NOT located right in the middle of the "Bible Belt" .... not even on the fringes.

The only Democrats i support are against exporting jobs and against corporate crooks and crooked politicians. I am not a Democrat. Like I said, we must take whats good in all parties. If we continue to fight each other the puppet master will continue to be just that.

Brian - think about what you're saying. We as a nation pay around $2.5 trillion annually in federal taxes - from income tax to corporate taxes, etc... and a total of nearly $5 trillion in all taxes paid.
90 years ago we paid zero federal income taxes. In 90 short years, with all the trillions in new revenue to the federal government, these idiots of all parties have overspent by approx $13 trillion, and the current gang are overspending by approx $1.3 trillion annually. 37% of the federal spending is borrowed money.

The private sector creates all of the revenue. The government is confiscating a larger and large piece, to what result? A government filled with fraud, abuse, excess salaries, benefits, incompetence, and in some cases criminal theft (Bell, CA as an example).

As for the 13 trillion dollar debt - seeing how the republican party is responsible for about 9 of that 13 trillion (and I'm being VERY generous with that estimate) then one has to wonder why the tea party is so keen on returning the party repsonsible for the lions share of the debt to power....
But of course that presumes that the tea party isn't motivated by other, more base motives.

Granted, Obama won the election in 2008, and some people have been very vocal in opposition to him. Initially some members of the Tea Party did carry some horrible signs, but over the last few months they have greatly diminished. Everyone keeps asking where were these “Tea Partiers” during Bush. Perhaps they thought the war was a good idea, perhaps they agreed with Bush policies. But after the economic downturn they thought to themselves, enough is enough, I’m tired of seeing the my paycheck being ate up by more taxes. Maybe they thought, why is only half of the country paying all the income taxes?
It doesn’t matter why they got motivated, they did. Most members of the Tea Party don’t want to hurt anyone, why can’t they spout their views as Liberals, the NCAAP, NOW and other liberal organizations. Why is it only them who do not have Free Speech.
Everyone wants to be happy, they want a place to live, and be able to provide for their families. But we have to accept that there is always going to be someone who has a bigger car than you, a nicer house than you, and they don’t owe you anything.
Also, I’m sure that all of you are aware of the Presidential Commission to study ways to decrease the deficit will issue a report by the end of the year. It is a bi-partisan commission. What will those of you who don’t want to any change in Social Security going to do when the Liberals also say it has to have changes?

...and that's not to give credit to anyone who is not getting up off of their butt to take an active part in creating and shaping their own destiny. I don't ask for "shizzle" because I firmly believe in my own ability to make my own way. I am what I consider to be an independent, I am liberal on social issues and conservative on fiscal issues. I am a white male (47) that has been involved with African Americans all my life. I was married to an African American female for almost 15 years and have 3 beautiful daughters with her. And I happen to know a lot of black republicans(both male&females). And I would never consider them Uncle Tom's. Just people who have different opinions on some issues than I happen to have.

We were headed that way, and millions of people including myself cheered at the election of a black man because we thought that would FINALLY, for once and for all, put an end to this notion that white America hates and wants to keep down black America. I'm sure there are a small percentage of white Americans for which this is true, but the vast majority No way.
And what we got was black America and liberals telling us we were racists for disagreeing with POTUS. That the only reason we oppose his policies was because he's black. Agree with POTUS, or else you're a bigot. Were America as racist as they like to think, he would never have been elected in the first place but now we're to shut up and never argue.

Where were you when Obama continued giving the large contracts to Haliburton? Didn't see that in the news did you? You read Boortz? Obviously you missed all of his articles in reading assignments about that one! It's bad and inexcusable when it happened under Bush. Used as a club to pound the Republicans, but perfectly acceptable when Obama continues to enter into new contracts to this day. I guess ignorance is bliss.
Kudos though to you on support for FAIR TAX a stand-alone, non-partisan issue that benefits ALL Americans, regardless, race, income, party affiliation, religious beliefs, etc..... This is truly the only change we can all believe in.

When 95% (your number) of any group of people can be pigeonholed, it starts to sound like a herd mentality. I certainly hope you are not saying blacks can be herded by Jackson, Sharpton, et al. My fellow postal employees who are black, are much smarter than that. They think for themselves and some are more conservative than even me. When the curtain is pulled at the voting booth, we are all free to vote our conscience, and should. Not what some 'community leader' or union leader tells us to.
Black people are unique and have gone through unique situations in this country. On Nov 2nd how many black people will vote Republican? Maybe 10. Stop bringing up Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Most black folks don't listen to them anymore. There time has passed. It is the KKK republican party which is keeping black people loyal to democrats.
Lisa, you asked how many black people we know. Well, honestly there aren't that many that live in my area, but the ones who do I find to be very good people and I enjoy their company. I'll admit, before I went to college I had probably only spoken to a handful of black Americans and I really didn't know how to act. However, my freshman year in college about 25% of my floor consisted to black students. I think it took about 5 days to consider those guys friends of mine. Its funny, but they were just like me. We liked sports, women and having fun and we all got along very well.
Furthermore, I have meet black people who are ass holes, but I have also meet white people who are ass holes. There are ass holes everywhere. It doesn't matter what race you belong to.
Now my question to you. How many white people have you meet and actually got to know? My guess is not many, if any. I think you have too many pre-conceived notions about other races.
For the record, I would vote for a black man/woman in a heart beat if he shared my same political views. I don't care where he is from or what race. If you put Bill Clinton against Condi Rice, I would vote for Condi.

Many Democrats were speaking of the need to "address" Iraq before Bush "fooled" anyone. Deal with this fact; many prominent Democrats agreed with the war in Iraq (before they didn't) no matter what they said to their liberal base. The bottomline is the resolution of the war in Iraq did not move as quickly as most hoped it would and their constituents complained about it.
FYI: I am a Conservative who believed in the war in Iraq, but I believe Rumsfield made some very poor choices that led to the length of the war.

Senior executives, on-air personalities, producers, reporters, editors, writers and other self-identifying employees of ABC, CBS and NBC contributed more than $1 million to Democratic candidates and campaign committees in 2008, according to an analysis by The Examiner of data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics.
The Democratic total of $1,020,816 was given by 1,160 employees of the three major broadcast television networks, with an average contribution of $880.
By contrast, only 193 of the employees contributed to Republican candidates and campaign committees, for a total of $142,863. The average Republican contribution was $744.

No one is hurting Obama. He is hurting himself. He has not followed through on a multitude of promises that he knew he could not keep. R. Auberger is unfamiliar with how our government works it seems. The President is the executive, he runs things on a day to day basis. He can spend or not spend within the rules set by Congress. Bush could care less about any of that. All he had to do was play the "sky-is-falling" card and do what he wanted (actually what Cheney wanted) and it was done. The Republicans sat on the butts and let it happen. The Dems were mostly afraid of the reaction if they opposed a war.
Its a little more complicated than that. The president is not a dictator. His office is no more powerful than congress or the judicial branch. If congress grants the president certain powers, then he can act accordingly, otherwise if congress doesn't agree with his policies, it can veto any bill the president signs and visa versa.
Three branches, each will equal power to create checks and balances. The president doesn't have limitless power.
If you really want to dig up history, Bush inherited a crappy economy and a recession from the Clinton admin. He turned it around rather quickly.

 The article clearly stated the couple was exploring, curious and stood at the back of the convention. It went on to say all they heard were religious testimonies which they agreed. From my perspective there is nothing wrong with that.
What they aren't seeing is, they are, like so many other people espousing to this faux movement, are being manipulated in the name of religion. Don't have to say more blood has been shed for religion than Carter has pills, and what does God have to do with religion. Tea partiers are being sold a lie wrapped in a little truth at the right time in American history, and the Republican party is riding a wave of ignorance all the way to the bank.
