Chelsea Proctor, 18, of Wetumka, Okla., comforts a horse, Nov. 1, 2010, at a truck stop in Salina, Kan. The Salina Journal reports that at least one horse was euthanized Monday morning and three others had fallen in a trailer that was being pulled to Oklahoma from Colorado. The horses were among 15 that had been used for hunting expeditions in Colorado. John Caldwell, 23, of Wetumka, Okla., who was driving the truck, told the Salina Journal he was helping out a friend whose truck transmission was out and could not name the owner of the horses. This horse, who had a number of scars and an area on its back where its hide had been rubbed clean, was subsequently euthanized.

Tender mercy

Salina.com Journal story: Horse euthanized, others in bad health

Gail Weir, manager of the 24/7 Store off West Crawford Street, called the Salina Police Department after a customer reported someone was hosing out a trailer on the truck stop parking lot.

“I came out and saw a horse laying down, bleeding,” she said.

they ought to put a bridle in the owners mouth and let him lead a hunting expedition...how sad, it's sad that people treat animals (who can't talk) like this...

If you cannot haul horses in the proper trailor and secured then you need to leave them in the pasture. Horses hauled for "hunting expeditions" are often treated badly. It sounds like they loaded these horses in a stock trailor instead of horse trailors.

Those responsible for this travesty should be arrested and thrown in jail.

Unbelievable.

I agree. Something is not right. With proper rails and tie-ups you have to wonder what happened. Without knowing more about the trailor one can only guess at how they loaded them. Even though this was from OK to CO, horses are pulled coast to coast daily. It requires frequent breaks to maintain and check on these animals. Forget heavy braking or hard turns. I am torn between being angry at the driver and just wanting to know what went wrong.

I too am livid! Gloria you are correct, these monsters need a dose of their own medicine. Where are the authorities and what are they going to do about this? The sad thing is this occurs every day, when are peopel going to wake up, there is no excuse to mistreat animals. The owner and the guy hauling these horses should be punished for animal cruelty to the fullest extent of the law. Please someone in charge do something. No excuse.

horses are majestic animals and should never be mistreated with disrespect, and cruelty..it galls me to no end. people that mistreat and exploit these animals in the fashion that they do today are the epitomy of ignorance and barbarism.they do not deserve these beautiful creatures.

i hope those people involved are charged with animal cruelty and should have the book thrown at them.if they do this to animals you can bet they will do it toopeople in one form or another.they are no dam good.

Monte scolds judgmental people in another post, yet calls this guy a nazi? The tool probably doesn't even understand the hypocrisy in that.

What the heck MSNBC? This is very upsetting to me and I definitely didn't need to see a closeup. Rest in peace to this beautiful animal :-(

While I agree some photos would be neccesary, if only to prove the law was broken in a hideously monsterous way, it was not something that should be posted without a warning of what's to come. As a horse lover, this pains me even deeper.

Not being warned is not the problem. This sort of thing goes on all the time. Hiding it from view does not make it go away. Because you can't see it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. We need to do more to stop such cruelty & the only way to do that is to shock all those people who want to be spared having to see the truth of the immensity of the animal cruelty problem.

I am really angered when I see this kind of thing. As a retired cop, having seen other examples of animal cruelty, I'd book this jerk in a New York minute. And, as for the owner(s) of that poor horse, should there be sufficient evidence, he should be tried as well. The term "animal" is often more accurate when applied to humans as opposed to critters like this one.

I'm glad the individual pictured was there to calm the horse and perhaps ease his suffering a bit.

Not only were the horses treated abominably, the surviving horses were promptly sent to an auction house for more mistreatment and possibly death in the horse meat market.

Disgusting and disgraceful. How utterly terrible to be treated so inhumanely, ridden until there are open sores, hauled ridiculously long distances in unstable trailers, to lead a life of utter misery and to then be euthanized. The euthanized part being the only shred of caring given to this poor horse. What is wrong with people ????????????? I sincerely hope the owner(s) of those horses end up in a deep ravine with imobilising injuries, where they slowly starve to death & no one will hear their calls for help. No euthanasia for them. Utter ba@tard@.

The people responsible for this should be executed, slow and painful, just like they did to these horses.

Precisely. Worked to death. Given no food. Only enough water to barely survive. Beaten, kicked and hit with riding crops and iron bars. Iron bits in their mouths so that they can't talk or eat. Loaded down with huge bags of rocks that weigh a ton. Thrown in trailers with no way to hold themselves upright so that they are thrown from one end to another. And then left to die in a parking lot in pain and misery. I do not understand why god is not punishing these people. Instead, he punishes the animals who are forced to rely on humans for their wellbeing. What is wrong with this picture ?

Don't forget these horses are animals. It's funny how removed you people are from animals and have no idea about the concept of freedom. Some people like to hunt (not me by the way), but this is America, the land of the free.

With quotes like the following, you people (I'm using the term loosely for you), need to look into your soul and tell yourself you are not god or a god, but just a judgmental person.

"The people responsible for this should be executed, slow and painful, just like they did to these horses."

              Reply#10 - Tue Nov 2, 2010 9:51 AM EDT

So because they are animals they deserve to be mistreated?

What does the "concept of freedom" have to do with abusing animals? There are laws in America (you know, the land of the free) that protect the rights of these animals. Laws were broken here.

Also, this has nothing to do with hunting except the horses were apparently used for hunting. Are you saying it is okay for hunters to abuse the horses or it is okay to hunt horses? I don't get your point.

Are you not in fact passing judgement on others as well by 'loosely' referring to them as people? Do you even have a soul to look into? I'd guess not if you can look at the picture of that horse lying on the ground while lighting up a Marlboro and spewing out, "...but this is America, the land of the free." without feeling any emotion except for contempt towards those who would like to see swift justice come to those responsible for the death of this animal.

Here, I'll pass some judgement, "You are a self absorbed jacka$$!" Hope no one abuses you.
