After sifting through thousands of banal (and not-so-banal) campaign images, it's refreshing to find photographers who have a unique approach to covering the run-up to an election. A recent set of images reminiscent of Choose Me by Arthur Grace has been published by the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Photographers K.M. Cannon, Jessica Ebelhar, Jeff Scheid, Jason Bean and John Locher have published a number of slideshows looking under the hood of the Senate, Gubernatorial and House races in Nevada.

From the beginning of this election cycle, the photo staff at the Review-Journal has been pushing themselves to think about their coverage in a more visually interesting way.

"We talked about wanting to get something different," Locher said. "This is an important election. Nevada residents are unhappy and we knew this would be a close race. And with Reid being the Senate majority leader, it made it a bigger deal."

Locher feels that visual coverage like this can reveal important elements about candidates.

“It’s helpful because it gives you more of an idea what campaigning is like and who they really are. [Photojournalists] tend to shoot the organized media events and they kind of look similar; they’re orchestrated for the media. If you can get behind the scenes and pull back the curtain a little, it gives you an idea of who these candidates really are."
