A father wipes a tear away from his child's face during a Medevac mission in southern Afghanistan's Helmand province November 13, 2010. The child was injured by an explosion.

Love needs no translation

I think this picture could have come from any corner of the world, and very little caption information would be needed. Some depictions of relationships and the emotions that come with them need few, if any, words.

This guy would probably never even blink before he beheaded an American that just fed his kid!

And how would you know that, Legal Texanbigot? Because he doesn't look like you? Because he's from Afghanistan?

Legal Texanlegal: Sweet, man, really lovely. Look at that kid's face, man!

That kid's children are gonna show up at your door someday, man. They're gonna have something for ya.

Thats interesting Mr Texanbigot. You probably wouldn't blink while killing his entire family as "collateral damage".

@anthony -------I rest my case and I'll bet 10 to 1 the kid is a boy! If they show up anywhere in America it's because naive folks like you let them in !

Texanlegal -- you see hate -- I see love. This is the face of war, families with broken hearts. If it happened to your family, you'd be off killing someone? Too bad; you should be home wiping tears.

Some are asking, "Why are we at war?" Maybe the answer is because there are too many people like Texanlegal. Diane

My son just returned from tour of duty. Although he had a few interpreters who "seemed" loyal, it was ALWAYS difficult to know just who the enemy was. My heart wants to think that his father was not one of the Taliban, but one never knows....for those of you who are non believers to the fact that there are a lot of "two sided" fathers...maybe you should do a tour of duty....and lose 10 comrades while trying to help.

First, the Afghans did not ask for our help.

Second, of course any of them could be Taliban. Just like any American could be a guard at Abu Ghraib or William Calley. You do not judge anyone by the worst of their kind.

Amen! Love does not know race, religion, or sexual orientation. Fathers love their children no matter where they are from. We should take comfort in this picture that this injured and scared little boy has a father to wipe away his tears instead of all the stories in the media lately about abuse and even murder from parents.

What is wrong with you people? It is one human showing love and tenderness to another. What do your judgments, hate and anger help? Maybe this man is an enemy, but we too are someone's enemy. His child may grow up to be the one who changes the world for good because someone showed love and tenderness--white people are not the only ones who can make positive changes.

And yes, I'm white, proud to be an American and a loving daughter of a veteran (who earned a Purple Heart among other medals).

A touching picture. A father's love. My question is this, and it may sound jaded, but would he have been there too for his daughter? The child appears to be a boy. At any rate I hope the boy recovers completely and can go to tell his countrymen that American's aren't the devil.

It is a very touching picture, so I certainly won't judge this guy's heart.... Just hope we get out of there. It is way too costly, in lives and also financially. Our seniors here in America are barley surviving on the paltry Social Security they get, families are losing their homes, kids can't buy school supplies or school clothes, fathers can't put food on the table..., and the list goes on and on in the financial category. And, of course, people are losing their loved ones to that war. Something they will NEVER recover from. If we "win", what is we win? What are we doing over there? Wasn't the Soviet Union laughed at when they were stuck in that quagmire years ago..., wasn't it called their "Vietnam"? Time to come home.

Why not for the daughter?? R u confusing Muslims for Hindus (if you know who they are)?? Female infanticides was (not anymore) practiced in India... not in Afghanistan.... DO your homework before you make a racial slur.

I think I understand the comment about the daughter. Sadly, Afghan men are sometimes quite evil toward the females in their lives.

Very touching and moving picture. It shows the love and concern any parent has for a child - odd how age, hatred and war can change those emotions. It's too bad all mankind can't find an end to wars of any kind and the killing of "our" children everywhere. I agree with one of the other posts - maybe this child will grow up and help change the world.

what an emotional photograph. Reminds me of the saying " a picture speaks a thousand words". No matter who we are at war against, that does not change the feeling a parent has when their child is injured. My heart just twinged when i saw the tenderness of the moment the photographer captured in this picture. I just pray for all of the innocents who have been injured, children, soldiers, all "innocents".

We have our own problems and I agree with that. However, we are at war. Do you forget why we are in this fight? The terrorists are gonna hit us again. I pray that I am not going to be a victim of them. Perhaps you should fear them to. Then you will want them dead also. Do terrorists care about kids. Because as far as I know we didn't ask for this war.

The terrorists! You have been watching Fox chickenhawks too much! The Afghans did NOT ask us to save them and they will never be "grateful" for our coming to their country and indiscriminately killing thousands of innocent women and children because we can't find one guy in a cave. Time to come home, admit the fact that Bush really screwed up, and come up with a better plan to get Bin Laden. It almost makes me puke to read the death announcements of 19 year old Americans sent to this ridiculous part of the world. Get the hell out- NOW!!!!

I am ashamed of anyone that cannot see how wrong we are for even being in that Country, killing it's citizens as though we have a Right. What blinded people we are to not recognize that what our Government is having our Military do in our name is Wrong. If this insane killing is not stopped, one day soon we will all be subjected to the same treatment. What is going on in Afghanistan and other countries is just a practice run for what these same Americans will be told to do to us. Have all of our 'leaders' gone crazy ? No wonder that so many of our young men come back Home and commit suicide. That is Our Collective Fault for sitting back and Allowing this perverted government to continue this insanity. Who 'appointed' the USA the Judge and jury of the entire human race ? No one I know ...what about You ?

How dare those that have the audacity to Judge that poor man's grief ! Remember this..You will not have the 'luxury' to judge anyone. One Day..soon. That man did this country no harm..yet we are destroying his country and killing his innocent people. For What Reason ? What Purpose ? Are we nothing but stupid sheep that have no brain and can only Follow the Leader to Hell ?

We are not at war! This entire action was built on a fabrication by a government that systematically lied repeatedly. We were initially justified in going after Bin Laden but Bush backed down and went for Iran's "Curveball" hustle and went into Iraq foolishly allowing Bin Laden time to prepare. We live with the results daily. For the people that voted for the incompetent Bush and lying Cheney it is just too difficult to admit that they share the responsibility for thousands of American dead who blindly followed orders.

Do you agree that we are at war. Yes or no. We are at war and the Americans killed over seas are less important that the people that are in the war. These people were given nothing by their government. They were given nothing by the world. The government's that made it possible for 9/11 are we supposed to just let this happen. I know the boy suffered but perhaps it isn't the boys fault. It isn't our fault but it is the fault of the government that harbored terrorists and let them kill Americans. The people they let live there. Those people need to exterminated now. There is ZERO reason for us to pass anything in congress other than things that protect America and make us grow as an economy.

I am actually a Democrat. I agree that the wars "might" be false. We didn't capture our number one combatant bin laden. I think we need to get out of there. However, would you disagree with the fact that we are at war. Tell one person fighting over there that we aren't at war. Please do that then talk to me. You can hate the politics but the moment that we turn our eyes and say well these guys are fighting the war we hate so we hate them then we are wrong in too many ways. We just won't fight. We are in for a huge attack.

I dare you to step one foot in the Afghanistan. I won't. Or you might. Because you believe it is full of good citizens that are abiding citizens and not at all cooperating with the terrorists that once attacked and killed many of our citizens.

These people have gone through, numerous frightening, miserable, fearfull hours, days, months and years, and to see a foto as this and make any kind of grotesque comment as a human being, your no human I should say. This kind of comments lead to more hatred thoughts and feelings among each other, because of ignorant comments as the one in Texas. Our soldiers even have compassion, when they see what is happening over there, yes its chaotic, and they are dealing with it on both sides,,,, but to discount ones childs injury and the pain in the father's heart, is a cruelty the will lead to nothing but your lack of humanism towards your surroundings Im sure.

It is the truth that this guy looks different, speaks a different language, has different past and stories to tell, and has most likely - very different opinions than most of the people discussing him and his son on the forum.

It is also the truth that most of the folks giving their opinions freely, criticizing, condemning, and judging have different past, stories, and opinions than people depicted in this image.

Giving opinions towards someone who looks like them, and less or terrorist like makes the people on this forum feel more and have a higher moral authority. From LegalTexanLegal to Wrifford, they need this guy to suffer and then some for them to be better, higher and more moral.

Lastly, those emotions of separateness, us against them, we are right and they are wrong etc. are the war itself. Media and politicians just reflect these feelings of hatred - no different than what Hitlar did. These are the reasons human beings - much like people on this forum - have killed millions like themselves just to feel superior, better, and more.

Don't worry though - you don't have to change or feel bad - that is how this game is played. For all the kindness and goodness to exist in this world you need the polar opposites - the hatred, opinions, judgments and obviously - TexanLegal.

What is NOT true is that all these opinons and comments towards what "they" are feeling or going through will actually portray and even come close to describing the entire universe of this father and the son. Again - such "imaginations" are one more way to be better, higher and more moral than "them"

By the way, the shrapnel was probably from the "Taliban", not the "Americans" that injured this child.
