A villager prays before floating a "krathong" on a pond during the Loy Krathong festival in Nakhonsawan province, north of Bangkok on Nov. 21. Believers float krathongs during the festival, as a symbolic gesture to thank the goddess of the river for providing the use of water.

Krathongs are traditionally made of a section of banana tree trunk, but the modern versions are usually concocted of bread or styrofoam. Let's hope for the health of the river they are celebrating that these are made of something other than styrofoam.
