The accumulation of rubbish in Naples reminded me of David Livingstone's comments on the value of dung beetles in his book Missionary Travels and Reseaches in South Africa written in 1857. On page 38 he writes 'As we recommend the eland to John Bull, and the gigantic frog to France, we can confidently recommend this beetle to the dirty Italian towns, and our own Sanitary Commissioners'.
