There are a couple interesting things happening in Ethan Miller’s photograph. Not only did he capture a picture of the meteor, but he made a picture of the rock formation by painting with light.
“Painting with Light” is a photographic technique in which the exposure is made at night with the use of a hand-held light. The photographer uses a very slow shutter speed and then moves around the scene with a light during the exposure and selectively paints light into the frame. The results can be otherworldly, because the subject often looks like it has an internal glow.
