No no, more people with pens jotting down their thoughts on Newsvine is what we need.

no guns is right so we can be as safe and secure as Nazi Germany.  Anybody look at the kill rate in Canada lately?

Interesting that her being killed wasn't part of the title....usually the media is all over that.

cops put their lives on the line every single day.......sometimes people forget that. More guns in the hands of more "people" is not the answer. No Parole Ever on violent crime is a better solution.

the idiot in the trailer got just what he deserved after fireing his gun stupidlyin the park before the law had been called! then he opened fire on the police which was even dumber. true some people shouldn`t be allowed guns but guns are really no more dangerous than any other tool which is what they in fact are ,when properly used,in properly trained hands!!!

If more people had guns you'd have more nuts like this one shootin up neighborhoods and making this world an even more dangerous place. Even trained law officers had a rough time taking this guy out [1 deputy dead, 1 wounded]. How much worse would it have been if the whole neighborhood had guns?

Let's leave keeping the peace to those who are trained and paid to do that thankless job and be grateful we have men and women in law enforecement willing to risk their lives to save ours. God be with the families of the deputies as well as the shooter's family and may the wounded deputy have a swift and complete recovery.

We will always have guns in the hands of those who shouldn't have them, regardless of our laws or restrictions or freedoms.

The real story here is this officer, and the tens-of-thousands of his brothers & sisters around our great nation who are willing to put themselves between us and them. Their job is hard and costly.

It is our responsability not only to hold them accountable for their actions, but to support them in their difficult duty.

Couldn't agree with you more retired.

Most of the people that I have met who have a problem with guns and people having guns are afraid of guns and have no experience with guns or the people who own and shoot them. They were told in PC school that "guns are bad," and that "people who have guns are bad and nuts" and they just parrot it out because in their own stupidity; they don't know any better.

My wife is from Cali. and was all kinds of anti-gun when we met. She got the idea that she should and she took the 'new shooter course' that my club offers. That was many years ago, and the experience changed her. Once she understood that putting a gun in her hand didn't make her a mad killer, but did give her a sense of safety and confidence, the fear of guns dissolved; there was no need for it anymore.

Several months after she took the course, and completely out of the blue, she made the comment that, "AJV, I just realized something." "What's that, I asked?" "The only way to level the playing field is for women to be armed." All I said was, "that's right." Because, that's right!

Who do you think is responsible for your safety; a cop? <snicker>

As the wife of a police officer, I do not agree with publishing this photo. It is an image that is disturbing and graphic. No family member should ever have to see this in the media. We live with the reality everyday that our husbands/wives/brothers/sisters/sons/daughters may never come home from work. Our loved ones chose to put their lives on the line to protect us. Please show them the respect they deserve and refrain from publishing images of police officers being wounded.

I am proud that some people are willing to "Protect and serve" instead of sitting in an office. Who are you going to call when you need help? Donald Duck and Pluto

Harvey, what is written on the side a cop car IS A LIE!

The BS protect and serve was removed from cop cars for years after cops in the South used the argument that it was not their job to protect, or serve, but rather to keep the peace. Why did they use that defense? Because dozens of cops sat behind their cars with rifles and shotguns in their hands while some KKK members threatened for an hour or more some civil rights workers, before they shot some of them to death, in fornt of the cops, who later arrested them.

There is nothing in a cops job description that says that they have ANY responsibility to protect OR serve you or me. The job of a cop is to KEEP THE PEACE. That's a PERIOD.

If you have the delusion that cops are supposed to protect and serve you, I suggest that you look it up; they aren't!

Who am I going to call if there is a life threatening situation right in front of me? Mr. Smith and Mr. Wesson, or more likely my own personal favorite, Mr. Colt 1911A1 in 45ACP. No more problem. You go ahead and call the Duck and Pluto the cop, you will be dead before you get to make the call if your life is in imminent danger.

No, she had a bullet resistant vest on. An arrow or knife will go through a bullet resistant vest like it was butter and a rifle round will go through it like it wasn't there. The best defense is, being well trained, well armed, and shooting even better.

There is NO SUCH THING as a bullet proof vest. It's an illusion of safety that helped to kill her.

AJV - you and your bull@!$%# comments can go crawl back in your hole anytime now. The cop was shot and killed because some nut with a gun was having a bad day and instead of just offing himself, he decided to try and take some people with him. To blame the cop - the victim - is just repulsive and disgusting. Kind of like everything you've posted, and everything you are making yourself out to be. I hope you never need to call the police for anything, and if you do, they show you the same level of respect that you've shown their profession - NONE.

And in response to Donald Duck and Pluto, I am NOT calling the cops that. I am asking who are they going to call if they are in need of help.

Sounds to me like the villain was after suicide, only to be aided by cops. The reason why so much attention goes to a police officer getting shot down/killed is because of the heart wrenching thought of a "normal person" like you and me who simply wears a badge to work faces a different kind of "bad day", sure some electricians get electrocuted, some taxi drivers get in head-on collisions, but something captures the public's eye with the sacrifice (unbeknownst to the victim) of a simple daily routine task unfolding tragically combined with the glory of battle/gun fights... God Bless America & God may bless the fallen officers family

No impotence problem here, and my life, my attitude, and my outlook on life, are great. I'm the luckiest man alive!

                                                Now, that leaves you.

I suppose that if you pulled your head out of your A$$ you wouldn't have such a $hitty attitude, feel a need to be childishly baiting, and you might see the world through a larger lens than your navel provides.

Do you always say moronic things hoping to get peoples goat because you have nothing intelligent to say or do you think that what you intimate is supposed to offend me? Your showing that you are a simpleton offends me. Everything you had to say just proves that the when I spit, the little puddle that I leave is larger than the gene pool that you came from.

Generalizations are never fun, are they AJV? But they sure work to get a rise out of someone, don't they?

Your responses and comments on this article only serve to show your own level of ignorance and bias against law enforcement, and that you have a child-like, naive worldview. Just the fact that you felt compelled to respond to the comments of so many others, and in such an antagonistic way, shows your immaturity. With time you may develop the ability to disagree without being disagreeable, but it's doubtful. Some people never learn. It's easy to criticize, but I notice that, other than claiming you've outshot many police officers at competition - I guess we'll have to take your word for that - you certainly aren't able to say what, exactly, the police shoud have done to neurtralize the shooter (who was shooting from inside a trailer, and had no worries about what or who else he hit) more quickly.

It is amazing to me that I have never met a single, law-abiding person who has a problem with the police. It is generally people who have a lead foot, don't feel traffic signals apply to them, and have problems recognizing the civil rights of neighbors, who have problems with the police. In which category do you fall?

A lot of your logic is off. For instance, if being shot at should be in a police officer's job description, then it should also be in the job description of a convenience store clerk, and a bank teller, right? And, taking that out, it leaves filling out paperwork? Well sure, there's a lot of paperwork in a police officer's job. But there is also investigation, crime prevention, traffic enforcement and yes, keeping the peace.

A final caution for you, from someone who has been there. There is a lot of difference between shooting at a paper target, and shooting at a real, living, human being. Don't be too confident in your ability to neutralize the bad guys until you've actually been in the situation. Keep in mind, particularly, that the bad guy might even shoot back at you. Over confidence will get you, or (God forbid) one of your family members killed.

Poor AJV had his trailer repossessed and now has to post from under a tree. The type that will spend a thousand on a new gun but not a dime on health care or personal hygiene. Let me guess, He's pissed that they came and told him the three junk cars on the front lawn must be moved. He can no longer drive the one functioning vehicle drunk and shoot out the windows at street signs.

In fact, he's actually jealous that the trailer in the photo was much better than his...before it was towed off.

Police choose this line of profession.  The pay is poor so most are in it for the "power"....the above the law mentality.  I have personally videotaped numerous officers with a "lead foot" and disregarding "traffic signals" and submitted to local news stations.  The officers then deny such until their respective superiors see the videos.  This from individuals "sworn to uphold the law".  So, I believe a "good cop" is simply an officer yet to be caught in a lie or deceptive act.  (They cannot even assist in a time of recession by turning off cruisers to conserve gasoline.)  The picture was taken by the press, exercising constitutional rights.  If you do not like the photo.....then do not look.  Here or anywhere, I challenge any officer or retired officer to prove me wrong.  Tell me in all honesty that you have never exceeded the speed limit, or used your lights to get through an intersection (the last doughnut will wait) or bent the truth to get an arrest?  "Sworn to uphold the law" means traffic laws, too.  If you exceed the speed limit and are not responding to a call, this is breaking the law and you are a bad cop (unless you gave yourself a ticket....after all, you would have given me or others a ticket....correct?)  Yes, such is tragic, but just as tragic as a clerk or attendant having gotten shot.....and they did not have policing powers to protect themselves while working.
