msnbc.com news services report: The governor of Pakistan's powerful Punjab province was shot dead Tuesday by one of his guards in the Pakistani capital, police said.

"Yes, he has died," a spokesman for Governor Salman Taseer added. His death comes as the Pakistan People's Party-led government is trying to muster support in a political crisis that erupted after a key coalition partner quit .

Police official Mohammad Iftikhar said Taseer was gunned down by one of his elite security force protectors. The suspected assailant was taken into custody, Iftikhar added.

Five other people were wounded as other security personnel responded to the attack.
