William Chavarriaga, 49, performs as the cartoon character Popeye the Sailor at Olaya Herrera airport in Colombia on Monday, Jan. 17. Chavarriaga has been employed by the airport for 30 years.

A real-life Popeye the Sailor

We wish we were able to provide more context for this image, but all we have to work with is the caption that accompanied it.

In an attempt to find out more information about the little-known and elusive imitator, a brief scan of the web revealed only one possible lead: a Colombian Twin Otter pilot with the same name.

Not that this will be much help... but the second sentence of the original caption read (please excuse the bad grammar): "Chavarriaga works since 30 years ago as employed to the airport in different trades."

I saw this fellow at the city center airport in Medellin. It was hard dealing with airport security and keeping a straight face after he came to say hello. He greeted us when we landed in a small plane. I have a similar picture of him I took. I am not sure of what his job is at the Airport. I did hear he once made it to Miami by hiding away in an aircraft. I could get the full story on him if some-one is interested.
