Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier (sitting) receives journalists in Haiti's presidential palace in April 1971 after he has been declared president-for-life on the death of his father, Papa Doc.

Haiti employed 100000+ U.S. affiliated workers in electronics and garments etc., until the U.S., in our total wisdom, booted Duvalier out of Haiti. Duvalier was several steps kinder than his father, and hospitals were being built etc. Since Duvalier left, it's been DOWNHILL economically and with civil unrest. His return to power (via legitimate election) would bring Haiti back on a track toward self-sufficiency.
His return to power would mean the return of the Makout and his tyrannical rule. Maybe you don't remember that part. There were some good things happened but at the cost of thousands of lives of anyone who opposed him. I lived in Haiti at the time and I can't even count the people that I personally knew who were raped and tortured and murdered by his so called law enforcement. Not to mention the millions of dollars that he stole.
I believe Papa Doc was referred to as "The Butcher" and was famous for cutting body parts off those who didn't agree with him-noses, ears, etc.-and it may be Baby Doc is the lesser, and it could be a matter of the lesser of two evils for Haiti to come. Man what a mess! Ribbit
