I have a hard time believing the owners would chose to let them starve to death, rather than just shoot them. We will update this post if we get more information.

Horses are left to die of starvation as the owners, who are tour guides, could not feed them due to lack of money in Nazlet Al-Saman, about 15 miles from Cairo, Egypt, February 8, 2011. The tourist business in Cairo and surrounding areas has suffered since the street protests against the regime of President Hosni Mubarak began two weeks ago, as tourists fled the country.

That is just absolutely despicable!!
This is absolutley HORRIBLE!!!!!! I just can't believe my eyes
Absolutely despicable.
Unbelievable. I'm totally disgusted. Absolutely despicable!
Let them go free. These owners should be ashamed. Plain evil.
Apparently there is no limit to what humans will do to each other, to other sentient beings and to the planet. By the way, this is not that unusual. People starve animals, abuse animals, murder animals, poison animals, poach animals, etc all the time. Welcome to the human paradigm. This is just sad!
Once again I'm sickened by man's treatment of our animals! These horses didn't have to die this way, being tied up and watching each other slowly weaken and finally die. If these people had any concern for their animals welfare they could have least turned them loose and ledt them fend for themselves. They would have had at least a fighting chance at survival. Maybe they would have survived and maybe they wouldn't, but at least you could say that you had done evrything you could to save them rather than just tie them up and watch them die There have been times when after reading articles of this type, about animals suffering at the hands of their owners or because of their negligence, when I wish that maybe the roles would be reversed between owner and pet.
They could not put the animals down ? Sick! They should tie the owners to a tree . Putting and animal down is not the worst thing that can happen to them as you can see by these photographs
to anyone who has read 'Of Mice and Men', please be quick and kind for these unfortunate ones.
America has parallel horse wars. Over 100,000 are sent to slaughter in other countries. There is way to stop the madness. Together, we can change the world, together.
At least let them go free so they can find their own food or someone else to care for them. Tying them and leaving them is so much more cruel than just leaving them.
This is absolutely terrible. If you cannot afford to properly take care of your animals you should not have them. At least have enough common sense or care for your animals to let them free in hopes they are able to find food on their own instead of slowly starving to death tied to a tree!

This is way more than 2 weeks worth of starvation. This shouldn't be blamed on the lack of tourist business, it was happening way before the protesting started.
Whoever took that photo should have done something. I do not understand how people can photograph a desperate situation and not intervene.
Got it ... how much and where do I send the money. For the Sake of everything Good, don't just take the picture. Step up. Coordinate. Buy some Hay. Do SOMETHING !!! And if you won't, please let the rest of us know what we can do.
I have to agree that these animals did not get like this in just two weeks. Nor did the horse on the ground develop that huge saddle sore on his back in just that time. Looks as if these animals were being abused long before the protests started. Sad that their owners have so little compassion that they would not end this needless suffering.
The Brooke, an international animal welfare organisation dedicated to improving the lives of working horses and donkeys in the poorest parts of the world, is urgently following up on reports of starving and dead horses tied to a tree in Nazlet-al-Salman, 25 kilometers from the capital in Egypt.
Nasser Hosny, Country Manager for the Brooke said the Brooke was deeply concerned by the reports and a vet team is in the area to investigate the situation and address these problems as best we can. "Many of the roads have been closed around Cairo and owners may not have been able to reach the horses," he said. "Or they may have run out of money to feed their families and abandoned the horses.
The Brooke's Cairo clinic remains open. Staff there continue to provide treatment for animals requiring emergency care.
As a horse owner I to can not stand to see such horrible treatment of these horses. However I think people would be shocked to see how much this happens in the states. Just go to a horse auction. Bacause of the new laws people can no longer take lame or sick horses to slaughter houses. So they are turned loose on government land to quote, "Fend for themselves". Many times they end up dead on the road where they have been hit by cars and many times the cars occupants are critically injured. People protest because these horses are taken to slaughter houses. However they are not prepared to step up to the plate to take care of these horses. I love my horses and would go without so that they are taken care of. But there needs to be a way out and people that don't even have horses or deal with horses don't need to be in the mix.
Once again, I am ashamed to be human.
WHERE is the International SPCA? Someone go help the animals. SHAMELESS. Of course, in this part of the world animals are just property.
Its time for the horses to have a revolution.
