Hubble delivers sparkling views of spiral galaxy

NASA released a dazzling image from the Hubble Space Telescope today, showing spiral galaxy NGC 2841.

According to their release, the image was taken in 2010 through four different filters on Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3. Wavelengths range from ultraviolet light through visible light to near-infrared light. NGC 2841 lies 46 million light-years away in the constellation of Ursa Major (The Great Bear).

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope reveals a majestic disk of stars and dust lanes in this view of the spiral galaxy NGC 2841 released Thursday, Feb. 17, 2010.

A bright cusp of starlight marks the galaxy's center. Spiraling outward are dust lanes that are silhouetted against the population of whitish middle-aged stars. Much younger blue stars trace the spiral arms.

Notably missing are pinkish emission nebulae indicative of new star birth. It is likely that the radiation and supersonic winds from fiery, super-hot, young blue stars cleared out the remaining gas (which glows pink), and hence shut down further star formation in the regions in which they were born. NGC 2841 currently has a relatively low star formation rate compared to other spirals that are ablaze with emission nebulae.

I'M REALLY ENJOYING these great minds and this discussion. Hey people, it all started out by looking at the stars. Try something like looking at it in AWE! It puts us in our place... We are very little.

My answer to why other forms of life haven't contacted us if they're out there? WE PROBABLY SMELL BAD!

I have a theory as to why scientists are looking hard at other habital planets. We are screwing this one up so bad they are looking for one that is virginal. FORGET IT.. None of us can go, only the elite can afford that ticket. I'm not looking for answers when I view the wonders of nature, I just appreciate the priveledge of seeing it. SO CHILL OUT, open your mouth and say WOW! Instead of putting your puny little theories out there for people to get upset about. Nature doesn't care or worry about any of that, nor do I.

Can`t we all think what we want, and still enjoy life, the solar system, etc................

It is beautiful as are many images we've seen from the universe.

As for those who would tell others they should not speak of religion, a god(s) or non-existence thereof, that is an attempt at censorship over something you may feel discomforting, there is no rule here stating subs may not share thoughts regarding religious opinions, be it for or against it.

Some people would consider that w/ what we do *know* about the universe through images and scientific measurements that of the billions of stars, billions of galaxies and solar systems w/ in them, curious why is it that SO FAR, no other planet amongst this vast array of massive objects in all of time that we can measure, is precisely like earth, the only planet that we know as of yet that contains a perfect balance of atmosphere/oxygen/minerals for plant/animal and human life to sustain itself, that we've been able to use resources found on the planet to build towers of glass and steel, roadways, automobiles/planes, even craft that can go beyond earth's gravitational pull!

The forces in the universe that boggle the mind, stars moving around black holes at more than 10 million mph, a tablespoon of a neutron star that can weigh up to 1 billion tons, explosions of stars that w/ the earth covered in nuclear bombs could not match its power, the overall massiveness & still mystery of the universe.

The mathematical equations we use are said to explain the why and what of these things, if these equations are to us considered knowledge/intelligence, how is it not logical that intelligence exists behind these things for which we have gained knowledge in order to explain them, that these things are not ordered of themselves, suggests an intelligence is at work.

Again considering the years spent counting stars, galaxies and planets, the ability to survey objects that are 700 billion years old as it took visible light this much time to traverse the universe and reach our instruments, yet, earth is this one uniquely beautiful planet rich w/ water and vegetation, soil for planting and building, in all of these years w/ countless observations, it remains the only known planet to support plant/animal and human life .. Now, where is the mathematical equation that not only explains the universe's initial *self* creation to the point that the universe *decided* to create the earth in all its beauty and unique environment to sustain life, why did it not *create* life on Jupiter or Saturn ?! If not human/plant/animal as we know them, then why not *alien* life ?! Where is the equation that explains the first seed of the first plant, of the first animal, of the first human ?! It was alleged these organisms COULD have been from *somewhere else*, provide the valid equation to support this!

We send radar signals, craft into space searching for other life, we sacrifice technology to make it down to the surfaces of other planets in our solar system in an attempt to understand its make up and search for other life, yet have not found any..

People can believe what they will, I will continue to believe in God as the intelligent designer of the universe rather than a random or predictable set of equations and assumptions that all things in the universe were ordered of themselves - somehow w/ what appears to be intelligent design but w/out intelligence... Finally, one last thought, IF there were no God of any kind, then all who believe in him/them, will simply die as any other, their flesh withering away, BUT IF there were a God(s) that exercise judgment upon those that reject him/them, then non-believers suffer the consequence of a hardened heart, its not an issue to fight and kill over, you believe or you dont, so what of it ...

What a beautiful and startling image. Love the void between core and arms, would have thought that could only appear in a much older galaxy. Must be really massive black hole to sweep out that kind of mote. Also love the dust lanes. If you lived inside this galaxy, bet you'd have very little clue how much dust was pushed out of galactic disk by starlight.
