France's Licorne "Unicorn" forces prepare for a military operation in southern Ivory Coast April 11, 2011. U.N. and French helicopters attacked forces loyal to Ivory Coast's Laurent Gbagbo, damaging the presidential residence in Abidjan and destroying heavy weapons after U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon ordered them silenced. Gbagbo refused to step down after his rival Alassane Ouattara won last November's presidential election, according to results certified by the United Nations, reigniting a civil war that has claimed more than a thousand lives and uprooted a million people.

Laurent Gbagbo, the man who could not imagine living a life below the pedestal of the presidential power - no matter the rejection by his people in last November's election, and the outcry of the international community. And with plenty of arrogance, and stupidity to spare, his actions have led him to a life at the lowest possible level of society - a prison cell!

But we are not done yet! Muammar Gadhafi lives in the same fantasy world where he can live only the life of "ultimate leader." Public address megaphones, and large public TV screens in Tripoli blare his virtues and call anybody who doesn't accept him as their ultimate leader "rats and dogs!" In short, all humans in Libya "like him and they are ready to die for him" - as he claims. And those Libyans who don't are just "vermins!" Gadhafi is still "clueless," but no doubt he would start to see Laurent Gbagbo in his mirror from now on!

It seems to me that the "Spring 2011 clean-up of unruly despots" in Africa is going quite well! Nikos Retsos, retired professor
