Tourists take pictures on Miracle's square with the leaning tower of Pisa, free of scaffoldings for the first time after 20 years of stabilization and restoration work, April 26, 2011. Legend has it the tower was begun in 1173 after a Pisan noblewoman left 60 coins to the city in her will to build a magnificent belfry. But after just three levels had been built, the tower began to lean, sinking into its foundations on one side. Though panicked architects and engineers have been trying to stabilize it ever since, the tower has continued to tilt.

Scaffolding removed after 20 years from the leaning tower of Pisa

It's nice to finally see how beautiful it is, without scaffolding. Previously they straightened the tower a little bit.

They should close the upper level to tourists if they want the tower to last longer. I'm sure the vibrations from people walking, or kids jumping up and down are going to hasten the structure's demise. The Italians don't seem to be excercising any sense in this matter; spend 20 years trying to stop the inevitable collapse of the tower just to let some tourists make matters worse. And for what, a few euros??
