Can't believe I missed this First Read post last night: Fake out: Senators confused over bin Laden photos -
Here's the confusion: Three senators -- Sens. Scott Brown (R-MA), Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), and Kelly Ayotte (R-NH), all Republicans on the Armed Services Committee, said they had seen a picture of the deceased bin Laden, but now are backing off.

The White House is explaining the decision to not release any pictures:
The White House had been weighing the release of a photo, in part to offer proof that bin Laden was killed during a raid on his compound early Monday. However, officials had cautioned that the photo was gruesome and could prove inflammatory.
"It is important for us to make sure that very graphic photos of somebody who was shot in the head are not floating around as an incitement to additional violence or as a propaganda tool. That's not who we are. We don’t trot out this stuff as trophies," Obama told CBS News, according to White House spokesman Jay Carney.

The New York Times' Lens blog just published another fake picture and linked to another. Both images started circulating on Twitter and elsewhere yesterday. I didn't link to them or debunk them here--I'm just updating this post to follow the debate in Washington over whether photos will be released. CIA director Leon Panetta told NBC News Tuesday that a photo proving the death of Osama bin Laden "would be presented to the public," but the comment quickly drew a response from the White House saying no decision has yet been made.

The White House said the photograph of a dead Osama bin Laden is "gruesome" and that "it could be inflammatory" if released.
White House press secretary Jay Carney said the White House is mulling whether to make the photo public, but he said officials are concerned about the "sensitivity" of doing so. Carney said there is a discussion internally about the most appropriate way to handle but "there is not some roiling debate here about this."
Asked if President Barack Obama is involved in the photo discussion, Carney said the president is involved in every aspect of this issue.

WASHINGTON — The government may release photos of Osama bin Laden's burial at sea later on Tuesday but no final decision has been made, a U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Knowing there would be disbelievers, the U.S. has said it used convincing means to confirm bin Laden's identity during and after the firefight that killed him. But the mystique that surrounded the terrorist chieftain in life is persisting in death.
Was it really him? How do we know? Where are the pictures?
Already, those questions are spreading in Pakistan and surely beyond. In the absence of photos and with his body given up to the sea, many people do not believe bin Laden — the Great Emir to some, the fabled escape artist of the Tora Bora mountains to foe and friend alike — is really dead.
U.S. officials are balancing that skepticism with the sensitivities that might be inflamed by showing images they say they have of the dead al-Qaida leader and video of his burial at sea. Still, it appeared likely that photographic evidence would be produced. (emphasis mine)

The bloodied image of a man with matted hair and a blank, half-opened eye has been circulating on the internet for the past two years. It was used on the front pages of the Mail, Times, Telegraph, Sun and Mirror websites, though swiftly removed after the fake was exposed on Twitter.
It appears the fake picture was initially published by the Middle East online newspaper themedialine.org on 29 April 2009, with a warning from the editor that it was "unable to ascertain whether the photo is genuine or not".

Based on some of the comments below (I've also replied inline there), I've updated the headline to clarify that this post is just an attempt to clarify that one picture purporting to be something is in fact fake, not a larger commentary on the important news that Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. troops. Meanwhile, the U.S. government says they have pictures of bin Laden's body and are considering whether and when to release them. According to The Los Angeles Times:
During the operation, a photo of his face was transmitted to analysts, who confirmed the identification.
According to Pentagon officials, photos of Bin Laden's dead face do exist but those widely distributed on the Internet are fake. At some point, if only to convince die-hard Bin Laden followers, officials are expected to release a corpse photo, as has been done in the past when famous villains such as Che Guevara and Iraqi President Saddam Hussein were killed or captured. Additionally, such special ops are typically videotaped by mini-helmet cams to document a sensitive mission and assist in debriefing and future training.

An image circulating on the Internet and displayed on some television news programs abroad purports to show Osama bin Laden’s bloody corpse. No U.S. or Pakistani officials have confirmed its authenticity, and two U.S. officials have warned NBC News that the image is a hoax.
Based on an initial look into the image file, we agree, and think it’s a fake. At first glance, the pixelation around the “wound” area and the odd lack of transition between different colored cloth and flesh indicate that the image has been manipulated.
Furthermore, the facial expression and beard are very reminiscent of a 1998 image of bin Laden, the first picture shown below. Next to it, we show the original resolution of the “corpse” image as we’ve seen it (197 by 263 pixels), “flopped” 180 degrees on the horizontal axis to conform to the original 1998 image’s beard orientation. The third image is a blended image of the two, with the “corpse” image at 100 percent opacity below the original image at 43 percent opacity. The way the images “lock” in place at the mouth, beard and nose indicate to us that the image circulating on the Web and some foreign television outlets is nothing but a clumsy fake:

I think that photo is a composite using the old library photo, yes. However the reason it has been constructed is, i think, because the corpse itself is seriously damaged. I mean I think under that composite area there is possibly nothing there - shot or blown away or damaged so severely no press outlet would be able to publish it.
So what you are seeing is an image cleaned up to a) demonstrate that at least the upper head/eye area is a correct 'fit' for OBL, and b) to allow circulation amongst news agencies.
Later it will be established that the body in fact way more damaged than suggested by that photo.

I believe he is dead, but I don't believe the U.S. has released his picture, and the one above is clearly fake. I don't know why, but the U.S. actually announced that they would treat his body in accordance with Islamic faith. Showing such fake photos and buried at sea within 24 hours (humm), should make us believe that Bin Laden was not the one killed. Let us say that some of us like ferry stories and romantic endings. I believe our Military. Perhaps this photo is a fake but that is why one should only search reputable sites for information. As far as following the Islamic tradition of burial within 24 hours, we are not a savage country or people such as those who are the followers of Bin Laden. Yes, there are many people who would love to have his body on display and urinate on it but that would lower us to the levels of these animals that we are hunting. I believe that all the necessary steps were taken to prove that this was indeed Osama Bin Laden. It is by no means the end to this war on terrorism but it is a good start. The photo is a fake, but it does not matter. You can be sure the military has multiple film and digital photos.

Well if you recall when They Killed Saddam Husein his dead body pictures were immediately on the news because it really happened regardless of who killed the idiot. Saddam Hussein was hung by iraqi executioners not the US military. The Iraqi people did what they wanted with the images of his demise. The US military has a choice, measuring what reaction it might have in the extremist Muslim world and what effect it might have on creating MORE terrorists. I do not think we need to showcase the event for your appeasement. As you and people like you are so few, so easily hoodwinked, and so tempted for conspiracy - little can be done to change your way of thinking with the exception of dumping the corpse on your kitchen table.
When FOX first announced this....they said it happened a week ago and that it took that long to do the DNA testing. Then it was that USL had a weapon when they shot him and then next time they said he didn't have a weapon. Wish we could get the truth once and for all. This administration is a MESS!
It really wouldn't matter if a real picture of Bin Ladin was shown with a bullet in his head, everybody would still believe it was a fake. If the man was decaying in my back yard I still wouldn't be able to to tell you if it was him or not because his face would be so mangled from the gun shot. We could display him in front of millions and there still would be plenty of people swearing that he is still alive. Maybe if we never hear another word from him for another 20 years we might be able to believe he really is dead. Your post is wrong and to be honest you should take it down, it's disrespectful at best that you obviously have very little to no actual knowledge on images that have been manipulated and you're messing with a lot of people's heads. use your brain to find 2 sides to the manipulation, not just focus on "the fact" that it's manipulated. Well, obviously this photograph is a fake; MSNBC's effective Photoshop demonstration is conclusive.
The burning question that must be answered is "When will official U.S. Military sources release a genuine, incontrovertible photo or video to prove to the world that this evil man is in fact, dead." Since he's already been buried at sea, I hope undeniable photographic evidence was captured before that last plunge into the ocean. I know they took tissue samples for DNA tests, but the world wants genuine photographic evidence and they want it now.
Bin Laden's followers will need explicit and unmistakable evidence to prove that their fanatical leader is dead and getting soggy in the sea. I think lovers of peace and haters of terrorism would like to be reassured as well.

I am a professional in the imaging business and you have proven conclusively that the photo is a fake. The questions are why and who supplied it. Have any photos been released by the US Government; any branch of the armed services? Certainly a real professional would have used parts of several images to make a composite that would take many days to debunk. I have no doubt that the bastard is dead, but who and why did someone release this obvious fake? Was it MSN trying to fake a 'scoop?' If so, it is dispicable and a slap in the face of genuine photo-journalists. Who was the editor on duty when this took place! He/she needs to be fired!

Hmmm, Well now. As a photoshop expert i can tell that this photo is a fake. Look at the second picture, Look at his left eye, the quality of the photo's background and lower half of the face doesn't match the top half, In other words, The paint brushes they used were more High def then the background. Another thing, the bottom half of the head is completely unsoiled. The picture of the initial head on the body is different quality then the quality of the body in this picture. And again appears to be untouched and void of any blood.
To sum it up, The Wounds on his face doesn't match the quality of the head, and the head doesn't match the quality of the body's background. the head was C&P

It just looks like someone merged a blurred Osama photo with an image of a corpse. The mouth, teeth and beard line up too perfectly. The amount of time between the original photo, and one taken today, would show a lot more differences. The patterns of the gray in his beard, the cut of his beard, the shape of his mouth, would not be completely identical.
I could be wrong, but working with photoshop is my day job, so.

Just accept his death maybe ppl look at the photo on the picture with the ppl watching the news the head is turned the other way so it cant be a fake NBC formatted the picture so they could make a story see look at the picture with the ppl watching the TV you can cearly see that

The people watching the news are watching an image in which the original was mirror-imaged (this is a basic photoshop command, 'flip canvas horizontal') and then merged with the photo of a dead person. They left the nose, mouth, lower cheeks, and beard intact. They blurred the bottom and sides of the beard to mesh it with the other picture, but left details right next to it completely sharp.
And, in fact, the government has now stated that this is a fake.
If they had really killed him, he would have been put on display. Thousands of pictures would have been taken. Any idiot can tell this is a fake. Look at the mouth. And don't you think that he would have a little more gray in his beard by now. The same gray in the same spots? And why is his towel wrapped around his head all blotchy looking. Someone is a not telling the truth and I'm not convinced one little bit that this monster is dead. I would keep looking.

This photo is years old and has no connection whatsoever with current events. Did any of you even read the article accompanying it? No? This article is about whether a photo of OBL's DEAD body should be released to the public. Yes, the article says this photo's a fake. That's not the issue. OBL was shot in the head by SEALs. It's not likely his body was identifiable or even viewable by the average person without their losing their breakfast and lunch. I'd like to see it, but I've seen a lot of trauma.
Right on Peridot, after serving in Iraq there isn't much in the way of carnage I've not seen, and I'd like to see Proof of this body being OBL I'm not buying the story until I have Proof, how many times did we find Hussein only to learn it really wasn't him? When you blow a hole in someone's head with a sniper rifle there's rarely enough left to identify from facial features. Fingerprints and DNA is about all we can use for identification. I believe our Seals could get the job done, but did they really?
I think they should release the photo of the body, the matching fingerprints, and even the DNA results. About the only thing the average citizen will understand is 'seeing' him dead (like they showed our people dead or mangled beyond recognition). There is no regard for life in the region, and the sight of dead bodies is nothing new to countries that have been warring against one another for centuries. Americans have been too shielded from the truth about war, even when they've seen the video's that were allowed to be released. There are too many 'sensors' in this country that want to shield us from the very things we perpetrate on others and keep us ignorant of how our actions affect other countries and our citizens as well.
If there is anyone in this country that believes 'everything they read' on the internet, the newspapers, and the blogs, then their mind has been twisted by misinformation, spinners, and liars. We only see what the government wants us to see and even that has been twisted to allow backpedaling in the future. The media is controlled by the government - freedom of speech died for the media in Korea and Viet Nam. Political ramifications for 'telling it like it is/was' are far too great for a lone reporter to print a story that may negatively affect the financial stability and perks their parent organization receives for printing the spun stories to the public. No matter what subject, there is always someone in power that want's it kept quiet so the American people won't be 'frightened' or 'alarmed'.
As a former Army reporter, I know how the facts can be twisted to support whatever opinion the government wants put out for public consumption. What you don't know - can't hurt them.

Yes, the Photoshop is obvious at first glance. In fact, both source images have been found and the image has been proven to be a conclusive forgery. But rather than jump at the conspiracy angle, it looks like what we have here is an amateur shopper passing off their crude work to an impatient and reckless global news media (especially in parts where they may not encounter a lot of photoshops on a regular basis).
The only way I would be in any way concerned about this would be if it were known that this image had been released by a U.S. government body. I strongly, confidently doubt that is the case; if this were all some elaborate Alex Jonesian Occam's Nightmare yarn, I would think the U.S. government could come up with something better. (Heck, I and millions of others could.)
This is so bad. I saw it on TV for a second and it looked kinda convincing but when I saw it online I could tell straight away it was a fake. For starters the lower half of the image is really blurry and a lot more pixelated than the top half and there is a significant change in skin tone. The whole thing's really dodgy, I can't believe National TV news would show this.
