American jihadist leads pro al-Qaida rally in Somalia

Feisal Omar / Reuters

American born Islamist militant fighter Omar Hammami, also known as Abu Mansur Al-Amriki, addresses a news conference at a farm in southern Mogadishu's Afgoye district on Wednesday, May 11. Amriki and four other foreign fighters in Somalia spoke at the gathering and vowed to avenge the death of Osama Bin Laden.

AP reports from Mogadishu, Somalia: An American fighting for an al-Qaida linked militant group in wartorn Somalia is threatening to avenge the death of Osama bin Laden.

Omar Hammami, known as Abu Mansur al-Amriki, or "the American," said Wednesday that bin Laden's death does not mean the end of attacks against U.S. interests.

Hammami is among hundreds of foreign fighters in the ranks of the al-Shabab, Somalia's most dangerous militant group, that is trying to topple the country's weak U.N.-backed government.

Al-Shabab carried out its first international attack last July in Uganda, killing 76 people watching the World Cup final in two bomb explosions.

Hammami grew up in the middle-class town of Daphne, Alabama, before joining the militants in 2007.

In a profile last year, The New York Times dubbed him "The Jihadist Next Door" because of his unlikely journey from a Southern Baptist upbringing to a key post in an Islamist guerrilla army.

These pictures are almost surreal. They have coconut drinks with straws. They are only missing the little umbrellas. Reminds me of an old Saturday Night Live skit. Back when the show was funny. From the front page picture of Hammami I thought the next pictures would show him with an acoustic guitar singing folk songs.

The only real questions I have is why didn't our intelligence agencies know about this gathering and why aren't there after party pictures of body parts everywhere?

It's about reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. Why kill him when we can follow him, build a data base of others to watch (like those at this party), find out who they know and take them out as needed.

It's called the CIA (Central Intelligence agency) for a reason, not the Central Cowboys Agency.

Is it inappropriate to make a comment about the size of the straws in the coconuts between those two idiots?

Also, why is it they all look like local militia rejects? Apparently they grew too old to play GI Joe, the military didn't want them, and their local militias found them inept, so they started their own organization. At least thats what it looks like.

No, but it is possible that he was some awkward weirdo in high school, so now he thinks this is his way to get back at all of the people. Along with his Somalian buddy with the pocket protector in his shirt. Really striking fear with that baby blue Gap collared shirt and coconut pina colada's there. At least he remembered to take the plastic orange cap off the end of the gun.

You do not have to be Italian to be in the mafia. Old mafia had Irish, German, Blacks and Jewish members in the mob. But they were not in the inner circle. The new mafia can not even speak Italian. So they are imitation mafia. Only Hungarian mafia is pure mafia. Even the Russians are getting mixed up as they venture in to hotel and entertainment mobing.

yes non Italians have been associated with the mafia and quite intertwined with them---Bugsy Segal comes to mind first.

As for this "American" guy----I think he'd be really smart to remain hidden.----maybe we can enlist a Russian to drop a radio active pellet into his tea. They have had practice and are very good at it.

There are many things about this country I don't like and I do whole heartedly believe that "We the people in order to form a more perfect union....." Should be recreating our government in the image of what our forefathers saw---meaning separation of church and state (all churches every state)----equal rights under the law---just becuase you cover your head (self) doesn't mean you get to skip being searched.

BUT I would NEVER stand against my country.

Ahhhh! Got it! Just like they did when they went after Bin Laden. Oh, that's right. Instead of capturing Ben Laden, or at the very least not proclaiming to the world that I, I mean we had killed him we could have water boarded old Bin Laden or at the very least farmed all that intel that was confiscated without Al Qaeda knowing? That kinda thing? Is that why they call it the CIA? Not the I'm Up For Re-election Agency? Thanks for your insight. It is so very valuable.

They are just looney scumbag ,evil ,violence loving murderers and troublemakers who do not have the intelligence to do anything other than kill and destroy. Same as some Gang bangers wouldnt ya say? All REAL muslims need to denounce these and all other FAKE MUSLIMS. The press needs to stop romancing them ,putting them in the spotlight and fufilling their needs by catering to their egos. Like they are acomplished citizens. Islam is NOT about hurting ,killing or spreading violence or disrespect to the government. Unfortunately non violent (real)muslims have to suffer for these highly exposed brain damaged nuts. I thought it was a crime to conspire harm to our government or to conspire harm to ANY people. Throw em all in prison. One with bread and water. Firing squad would be better but then that would be wrong, would it?????

And seeing kids dressed in wild colors with their long hair, beards, beads and 'joints' hanging from their lower lips; seeing the picture of this idiot reminds me of those idiots from our past lives. We should consider that there aren't too many innocents in Somalia. Especially in Mogadeshu, according to people form Sudan and Ethiopia I've spoken with, and reports from various sources, Mogadeshu has been occupied and held by a Warlord and his major militant group for a number of years. Many civilians who lived there prior to the Army Ranger fiasco have left the area. It would be safe to say that if we levelled the city, there would be very little collateral damage.

But in reality American conservatives have far more in common with him than they seem to realize. A fervent devotion to ancient dogma, blind faith and a desire to return to the past. Liberals generally detest fundamentalist belief in anything. We want a progressive society not regressive and repressive. The last thing we desire is an Islamic society. A true nightmare for liberal thinking. We desire that no more than an America ruled by John Hagee type thinking.

How in the world this pitiful creature could decide to fight against the U.S. and be in favor of killing Americans is absolutely unfathomable. That he seems lucid makes nuts like him much more dangerous than the average lunatic. Like his hero, bin Laden, he also needs to be "sleeping with the fishes"........

Nor does it use lies, fraud and tricks of any kind as part of its repertoire in dealing with others – or with anything. And those who say Islam is or does any of these things are most likely inveterate liars or total ignoramuses or both.” (Dr. Pasha)

Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]...and fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."

Yeah. I can see how Dr. Pasha would call anyone who could have possibly taken this verse and 117 just like it from the Qu'ran as any sort of recommendation toward violence. No, really. It obviously means something else entirely. You know, like perhaps something exactly the opposite of what the words on the page seem to indicate? Sure. That works.

Or do you wish to make "sense" out of a direct command from Allah (may pizza be upon him) to his followers to slaughter non-believers? Would that make you feel better about your superstition of choice?

I know many peaceful Muslims. Most of them are slack in their faith and about as dangerous as a dancing Baptist. I know ZERO who openly speak against the rampant violence in Muslim nations against women, Jews, or other Muslims for that matter. If they are speaking out, they are certainly not doing it enough.

Just do NOT profess that "Islam doesn't teach that" when it quite clearly does. You're not fooling anyone.

I could take some very bad things from the bible too. that refer to what was going on in that time does that mean the bible advocates violence? no DUH MAYBE IF YOU READ the whole thing instead of taking parts refering to what was going on in those times you might get something positive out of it DUH of course that would be too much trouble to actually read and understand something. why read and understand when someone else can do it for us

You seem to quote conveniently and at the same time wrongly. Here is a translation of your reference (2:191-193) as well as (2:190) which is critical for putting things into context

                                    190. Fight in the cause of Allah those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for Allah loveth not transgressors

                                    191. And slay them wherever you catch them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out; for persecution and oppression are worse than slaughter; but fight them not at the Sacred Mosque, unless they (first) fight you there; but if they fight you, slay them. Such is the reward of those who suppress faith.

                                    192. But if they cease, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

                                    193. And fight them on until there is no more persecution or oppression, and the religion becomes Allah's. But if they cease. Let there be no hostility, except to those who practice oppression

                                    The quote mentions "senseless violence".

When you are attacked, Islam permits for one to defend themselves to the extent of which he has been attacked and then withdraw.

Islam does not support attacking the innocent - senseless violence

You forgot to add; (see bold text)

“Islam may be a lot of things. But a champion, advocate, instigator or friend of senseless violence it is not. Nor does it use lies, fraud and tricks of any kind as part of its repertoire in dealing with others – or with anything other than in the language of the Great Satan.. And those who say Islam is or does any of these things are most likely inveterate liars or total ignoramuses or both or they are speaking in a language other than that of the Great Satan.” (Dr. Pasha)

You quote one freakin guy. There are approximately 1.6 billion Muslims in the world. When they all start quoting him maybe I'll start listening.

Unfortunately a significant number of Islamists feel the same "oppression" as a lot of our Christians do here in the US. Until their religion (Islam or Christianity) is the only one being practiced they are free to carry-out their attacks, be it through draconian legislation controlling acceptable associations and freedom to make personal life decisions, or through more direct action of bombings and killings .

"Turn them out from where they have turned you out" depending on the historic time you are considering means they should rule the entire mid-east, siginificant parts of southern Europe and up into Spain, and they should take major parts of India as well as all the Muslim nations that already exist.

Religion has been and continues to be one of the primary sources of wars, terrrorism, violence, and repressive governments. We need to learn how to live together and respect each others rights as free people to make our own personal life decisions, and stop trying to impose our beliefs on others.

Soldier, I hope you are insinuating that both networks are biased?

I would agree with Steve that FOX definately stretches the truth and fabricates information...I have yet to see any articles that have been complete fabrications on MSNBC, twisted, yes, false, no.

FOX is a right-wing propoganda tool. They are open and obvious about it, they don't openly admit it, but they should.

MSNBC and CNN are decidedly left in their presentations. They are not the tool that FOX is.

                                                  @Military Man,

I would say that all networks cater to one side or the other, but it is up to the viewer, as an intelligent person to look past the party line that the networks agree with , whether admitted or not. I try to view stories from multiple networks to try to get the whole picture & avoid the "left-wing" & "right-wing" bias.

Of course, I'm making the assumption that all adults are intelligent...

We are all made of this earth and will die on this earth what makes us all so different then.

So....which muslims are NOT dickheads, again? I forget.

Are we opening the door to more hatred when we fly planes into the trade center or the pentagon? When we behead women for leaving the house with no male relative?

"We are all human", but that doesn't offer much similarity. Doesn't matter "how much better" anyone is than anyone else when some of us kill unarmed, innocent civilians and some of us don't. This particular man has expressed an interest in killing...so he will get his wish. The hard way.
