Relatives and friends of Humberto Leal react after being notified of his execution in Guadalupe July 7. Texas executed the Mexican national Thursday after the U.S. Supreme Court declined to act on concerns raised by the Obama administration regarding international treaty violations. Leal Garcia, 38, was executed by means of lethal injection at a state prison in Huntsville after both the Supreme Court and Texas Governor Rick Perry declined to act on requests to delay. Leal Garcia was convicted of raping a 16-year-old girl and then bludgeoning her to death with a 35-pound piece of asphalt in Texas in 1994.

Texas executes Mexican killer

HUNTSVILLE, Texas — A Mexican national was executed Thursday for the rape-slaying of a teenager after the U.S. Supreme Court turned down a White House-supported appeal to spare him in a death penalty case where Texas justice triumphed over international treaty concerns.

Humberto Leal, 38, received lethal injection for the 1994 murder of Adria Sauceda. She was fatally bludgeoned with a piece of asphalt.
