Norway killer Anders Behring Breivik reconstructs Utoya shooting spree for police

The AP reports:

Restrained by a harness, Anders Behring Breivik reconstructed his actions for police in a secret daylong trip back to the crime scene where he killed 69 people at Utoya island near Oslo.

The 32-year-old Breivik described the shootings in close detail during an eight-hour tour on the island with up to a dozen police, prosecutor Paal-Fredrik Hjort Kraby told a news conference in Oslo.

Under heavily armored police guard, Anders Behring Breivik (left, in red T-shirt) returns to Utoya island on August 13 to reconstruct his actions during a shooting spree on the island.

Breivik travels on the ferry under police guard.

The reconstruction took place amid a massive security operation that aimed to avoid escape attempts by Breivik and protect him against potential avengers. Breivik walked roughly the same route as the one he took during the shooting spree and explained what happened with as little interference as possible from police, Hjort Kraby said.

The entire hearing was filmed by police and may later be used in court, he added.

Video images of the reconstruction published by Norwegian daily VG show Breivik arriving at Utoya with the same ferry he used to get to the island last month. Breivik wore a bulletproof vest and a harness connected to a leash over a red T-shirt and jeans as he casually led police around the island.

Breivik is seen pointing out locations along the way and simulating shots into the water, where panicked teenagers dove in to try to escape from him.

"The suspect showed he wasn't emotionally unaffected by being back at Utoya ... but didn't show any remorse," Hjort Kraby told reporters. Read the full story.

Confessed killer Anders Breivik returned to the Norwegian youth camp where he killed 69 people to reenact his bloodbath for police. NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Look how they parade him around for the media, feeding his huge ego.

Now what? They all join hands and try to "understand" him?

Norwegian police is a failure I guess. He should've been done a long time ago.

yeah I bet the police chief was like... "hmm.. how can we inflate his ego... I know! let's take him back to the kill site and 'pretend' like he is helping us when actually he is doing nothing but getting some more media spotlight."

you guys are way too smart for me!

I'm saying that the cops should not be parading the suspect and recreating the scenes and giving photographers the chance to show these images. Also their response to the shooting was horrible. I guess it goes all the way to the top and the society.

I'm not talking about how to stop these kinds of shooting, but at least the cops should be more alert, not parade the suspect. That's all I'm saying.

parade him? what are you talking about? do you want them to cover him up with a blanket the whole time like Michael Jackson's kid? this was supposed to be a secret trip... they didn't/don't want this to be a media fiasco, but they also want to effectively get the necessary information out of him.

I'm saying he should've been executed a long time ago. No questions asked. Done. What more information is needed from him? There are 500 plus witnesses and killed 70+ plus people. If it was a secret trip, the police totally failed in that regard because there are at least 3 very high resolution photo of him above.

They needed to bring them out there to fully explain how he pulled this whole operation off. The police were skeptical about this being a one-man job because there were some discrepencies on how he executed this plan. They needed to take him to the site to fully explain how he pulled it off without any help. They are trying to pick this man's brain to get as much information as possible and to learn as much about the rational mass murderer as they can. Not every country is like America with our shoot first, ask quesitons later mentality. I don't want you to think that I'm some hippie liberal or something trying to down American right now, but based off the comments on this story, one would think that Americans legitimately think that our way is the only way the world should work and everyone else should conform to it already. Umm.. this just in: there are billions of other people in this world that all hold different beleifs, values, and ideas on how government, society, justice, etc. should operate... and I hate to burst your bubble if this is news to you. This happened in Norway to Norweigians... why don't we let them handle their internal problems and conflicts themselves without trying to yell at them to execute this guy already? They want to gain more knowledge and insight from him, and who are we to tell them what they should do? Is it really any wonder why so many people in this world hate us?

Grafeo, one way of stopping this from happening again is to turn the spotlight off of the killers and onto the victims. Make the news stories about victims with their pictures and the pictures of their loved ones. Show no pictures of the killers.

Here in this area the media will not report a suicide, because it might encourage others to kill themselves. So the media here at least realizes the power they have. Now why can't they show a bit of respondsablity and not turn the killers into the story.

I will tell you why this guy did this. It is really very simple. He is insane!! Getting into his head will teach the police, the media, or you and I nothing. He doesn't think like a sane normal person. Choas, confusion, and surprise are not patterns that we can track. I understand you want a reason, meaning behind the deaths of so many beautiful innocent lives, but I am sorry there just isn't any reason. Why one person lived or was able to hide and another not, there is no reason. No way to protect ourselves against that. I am sorry.

All we can do is hope the insane people show their true colors before they actually hurt another living thing. And we can pray if faced with this situation that we might be able to stop the mad man (or woman). Now we a can pray for the famlies that lost loved ones and those poor children who made it out. Their nightmare will continue long after we have moved on to another tragedy and that is the true story here.

      #1.11 - Mon Aug 15, 2011 4:14 PM EDT

It is sad to think what the parents and other family members of the victims must be feeling when they look at these photos. This guy holding his arms and hands in a firing position is infuriating enough for those of us who did not lose loved ones.

Why give this Mother @!$%#er the time of day. Shoot him between the eyes and be done with this scum bag for ever.

He Doesn't deserve the time of day from the living. he only belongs alongside the dead.

This is very sick. There is no need to obtain this type of evidence. All this does is let this psycho relive what for him was his best day. He should be castrated, not allowed to brag and fantasize about killing children all over again. This guy thinks he will be remembered as the father of a "free Europe." He has no remorse for what he did. This field trip is a reward to him. Sick.

well JTaveras, actually as it turns out YEAH it was necessary to take him there... umm.. OBVIOUSLY. Why else would they have taken him there? Do you think the officers that are patrolling around him and trying to gather the information he is giving them to cover up loose ends and get a better understanding of how he executed his plan really did this just to hopefully get their pictures online or something?

As much as am both sickened and fascinated by these photos, I must think that the police did indeed have good reasons to bring him there. I can only begin to imagine what they were, but I'd assume there was a calculation based on how much it would feed his ego vs. the necessity of getting some of this information from him. It could be they don't care much about what this psychopath is "getting" out of it, and instead held above that the interest of closure the information could provide for the families some of his victims. And possibly what it could provide for law enforcement, as it has been noted their response was roundly criticized.

Anyway I wish the pictures wouldn't have gotten out. It strikes an emotional chord, none of us want to see him anywhere except incarcerated or headed underground.

needajob2: Is it really any different than the radical muslims? All religions have a radical element. They are often the most dangerous people on earth. If we are going to call the 9/11 terrorist radical muslims then Christians shouldn't deny this is a radical Christian. The truth is that this guy studied the Bible and found his inspiration there whether we like it or not. Muslims probably do not like having their religion tied to extreme acts either.

Amazing how obtuse our world has become to almost every area in discerning wisdom and sanity. Because Norway's laws are so toothless (this guy will get fed and housed for 20-some years and then set free... as a middle-aged man!), he runs with that "freedom"...stroking his ego, dismissing justice, flaunting his crime in the nation adn parents' faces... and so many more wrongs. This world is becoming an increasingly foolish and unsafe place. The Bible does know when it says that in the latter days, the hearts of men will become increasingly cold. Case in point, the Norway-Beivik tragedy.

Before you start condemning Norway you might want to consider that despite doing things very differently than we do in the US, they have much lower rates of violent crime per capita. It may go against accepted ideology here but they seem to be doing something right. If they're laws are "toothless" why do they seem to be more effective? We'd do better to ask ourselves this question instead of jumping to conclusions.

In my view bashing a system that seems to be more effective at fighting crime than one's own without asking "why" is being "obtuse".

Agreed and what's with the jeans and t-shirt. Shouldn't he be in a prison jumpsuit? Must be great for the victim's families to see this.

Sean-336944, well, I hope they give him a warm cup of hot chocolate and read him a bedtime story before he goes to sleep every night. Our problem isn't that we bury criminals in the U.S., because if we did, we wouldn't have repeat offenders because for heinous crimes like this (or anything close), the criminal would be literally buried. The problem here is that we cuddle them with misguided personal rights.

With 100% certainty of guilt, is there any reason to keep a maggot like this alive? If your answer is yes, let's use your tax dollars to feed, house and rehabilitate them.

Today we found out where he got his ammo- mail order from the USA. In Norway, the largest clip you can buy holds 3 rounds so he ordered 10 clips that hold 30 rounds each and that's what he used to carry out his massacre.

Once again, our National Rifle Association comes through in a pinch. Nice going guys...

Jim Johnson, according to your logic, we should blame Boeing for 9/11 because their aircraft cabins were so easy for the terrorists to get into...

Yeah, I'm not a gun guy and think the need for them is pretty low but I agree with 5thofNov. Norway should probably stop them from coming in right? If you are crazy, you can get the supplies you need to be fully crazy.

The weapons and ammo didn't kill those people...a mental case person killed them.

John-All the more reason to provide unfettered paccess to extremely destructive weaponry? His homemade bomb killed far fewer people than his guns did. Why do people need access to automatic weapons with high capacity clips and exploding bullets?

@ John Williams....yeah, but it's a lot harder for a mad man to kill a ton of people without guns and ammunitions.

Sean: with questions like yours, I just have to ask it... are you dumb? Clearly he used guns and ammunition to kill these people, but it was him who killed them, not the guns. If the guns and ammunition were never in his hands would they have still killed those people? Are you aware that inanimate objects cannot actually trigger themselves? I bet you blamed those pesky planes for 9/11 too, huh? Cause last time I heard it wasn't those terrorists that flew into the building, it was the planes.

It's as if we think we are literally the only country in the world and that how we do things is the only way the world does things....
