Hope that no one was killed.
Another reason why nuclear power plants should be shut down forever!
Don't EVEN start on the fact the President is on vacation.... SO is all of Congress!
Soooo, I guess Hannah wants Obama to predict earthquakes and to plan his vacations around them now. I bet Bachman would have stopped the earthquake if she were prez. lol
Seriously!!!!! Seriously!!!!! What does the fact that the president and congress are on vacation have to do with an earthquake. OMG!!!! If they were in their offices, they would have been running out of the building like the rest of us......I agree, get off the vacation BS. Do you really think that if they were not on vacation, all of the problems with congress and the presidency and our nation would be solved??????? The quake was a result of mother nature, not the politians and believe it or not they could not have prevented it...whether they were on vacation or not!!!!!
Why, so we can be stuck on coal powered plants till we run out of coal? You can't deny one technology unless you have a better alternative, and no, wind and solar plants are NOT going to be able to take over for coal fired plants. It's simply not feasible. I for one would like to see more research money put into fusion power.
Fusion power?? 99% of the people on Newsvine does not even know what that is.
I think you have hit upon a significant fact here. However, why limit it to "the people on Newsvine?"
Well I guess we could go world wide then. 99% of the people in the world does not even know what Fusion power is. I bet it will get google a lot today
nessie-2999130
No, but my man Ron Paul warned us this would happen if we didn't shut down the Fed!!!
Just kidding.
Hardcoffee - lol, good point. However, enough of the right people know about it so I am hopeful that we will see a breakthrough within my lifetime. And after that EVERYONE will know about fusion :-)
Clean up in isle 5!!!!!!
I doubt mother earth cares whether our government is on vacation or not. Stop with the vacation BS already.
I want to know why they did not mention S.E. Massachusetts! We felt it too! In fact I called MSNBC 2 minutes after the temblor to add that I felt it too! Why do they only make a big deal about Wash. and NYC. What about Boston? In every disaster that affects the East Coast, They NEVER mention BOSTON!
That's because Boston does enough talking for everyone!
I sort of agree that it is funny that NYC is the center of media attention, even though it was only on the periphery of the quake's area. But I think it would be even more comical to concentrate attention on Boston, which is even further away and where nothing really happened.
I am about 50 miles from the epicenter, and it was more than just a little tremble here.
maybe because you guys were a lot further from the epicenter than DC and NYC?
you took the words right out of my mouth Hannah!!
Oh Darn, I wanted to blame Obama first. Looks like I was a little slow on the draw.
Bush is stll blame all the time. Remember he pushed Hurricane Katrina right into New orleans then blow_up the levee himself
We felt it all the way down here in South Carolina....
yeah in nc we felt it, it was tiny though
I swear I felt it here in GA. THere was a lot of rumbling and shaking going on. Even my dogs started freaking out. I though it was a convoy of logging trucks going by down the road behind my house.
I'm in Boston and I never felt it. I was in Crate and Barrel on the 2nd floor when it started. I was listening to The Thom Hartmann show stream on my iPhone so I heard their reaction live.
Hannah - I am sure you must also disapprove of the president and congress taking time each night to sleep, after all, they were elected to serve us! Their timing for their vacations might be a little off with all that's going on with the economy but to mention that they are on vacation and guess what! There was an earthquake in Virginia! The last one of this magnitude in that area was in 1897. What would you have them do? None of them, not even John McCain if he had been elected President could have stopped it if they were in town.
Politics has deranged some people's minds!
It would have been better timed to happen when Obama may address congresss after their return from their vacation.
I wish this had happened during the debt ceiling debate, then maybe the tea baggers would have thought it was God saying "Get on with it for my sakes".
I was about 75 miles from the epicenter in Northern Virginia and have not seen any damage personally even though I have seen pictures of expected damage for a quake this size (broken chimneys, items knocked off of shelves, unreinforced walls collapsing, etc.)
The president is NEVER actually on vacation. He remains president every living moment and gets briefed on all major issues every day regardless. The only difference is that he is not in the Whitehouse.
I know Obama is awesome and all, but what exactly did you expect him to do ... command the quake to stop? Get real!
I like in Tidewater VA and we felt it here. The news HERE is acting like it's the end of the world, haha. There was no damage here, but they evacuated the shipyards and the military bases. Why, I'm not sure-- maybe we'll have more info on the news tonight.
I've lived in Japan and Southern CA, two of the most earthquake prone areas on earth and I study seismology. I've been through several earthquakes and to be honest, I didn't even feel this one. I had to go out, I went to put my kids in the car, realized I left the GPS that I needed inside and I went to get it. My mother in law asked me at the door "Did you feel that?" I didn't know what she was talking about until I saw the light fixture swaying.
That's significant: if you are walking and you don't feel the quake, it's not a significant one. Realistically, as far as the Tidewater area is concerned, I'm more concerned about the hurricane than I am this quake.
I hope everyone that had the more intense shaking is okay-- remember, per the Richter scale, a 5.9 is about 10% more intense than a 5.8.
I prayed that God would let me know if he was listening to me when I asked for help from a gang of vandals that are harassing me. I live in Pittsburgh, they are here from Virginia to help take over a city that allows drug dealers to use jail as a vacation spot for a few days. This harassment followed me to D C as well. When I heard of the places hit by the earthquake and the fact that Pittsburgh felt the tremors made me think, maybe God was telling me he's angry and tired of the african american gang ruining the best of everything he created. I'm glad no innocent people were hurt. God knows what he's doing. Pray, he's listening.
I live in Athens, in Southeast Ohio and we had tremors for about 10-15 seconds. I felt it but at first thought it was a wind shear like we've had here a few times lately, but realized it rocked side to side instead of back to front. My husband was cutting/trimming trees in Columbus, OH and felt it too.
Regarding the woman who wants more attention in Massachusetts: try living in Ohio...talk about a lack of attention! Columbus is the only city we have, you know (insert sarcasm). And the only attention we get in national news is the Buckeyes football team (for their illegal activities) and crazy weirdos (the rapper inciting something or other which I now forget what it was) who absolutely do NOT relect our values or daily lives! HA HA As a matter of fact, the difference in culture from Athens to Columbus changes drastically from redneckian villages to the snoot-de'-snoots. Well, there's more to life than attention! I like anonymity myself.
I guess they can't say anymore that California is a dangerous place to live. At least around here we are prepared for something like this.
It is great to hear that people are OK there.
"D.C., N.Y. areas evacuate as quake felt across East"? MSNBC has some really bad headline writers.
what the big fuss u all had a earthquake.and u all should make sure every body is ok and stop worried about the president on vacation he cannot stop it
It might have shook some sense into congress if they had been there. Oh well. The teaparty mythologists would have likely wet themselves thinking the rapture was upon them.
