The Tribute in Lights lights up the sky over the Brooklyn Bridge and lower Manhattan, Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, in New York.

Every year since I moved to New York City, I've seen the annual display of lights and it's been my reminder of that day. I rarely go down to the World Trade Center site, but this memorial can be seen from miles away. This year is supposed to be the last year of this display as the new towers are being built and the official memorial site at Ground Zero is now open. I think I'll miss it, though. Will you?

More photos from yesterday's memorial services.

13:4. Or those eighteen upon whom the tower fell in Siloe and slew them: think you that they also were debtors above all the men that dwelt in Jerusalem?

13:5. No, I say to you: but except you do penance, you shall all likewise perish.

Our Washington politicians are milking the tragedy of 9/11 for every last drop of national emotion. . Its truly disgusting. Nothing will ever change that terrorist attack that killed 3,000 people. But where are these politicians when it comes to an even greater tragedy, that happens each year in America . The murder of 13,500 people in America each year. that's right, 13,500 murdered. And since the 9/11 tragedy, approx 135,000 people have been murdered in the USA , they too have families that grieve. Where is the monument to those 135,000 murdered since 9/11. You politicians made me vomit with your staged TV sympathy and flag waving.

It seems like light pollution to me. Just what N/Y needs.. More light pollution.

The photo of the father nealing at the WTC Memorial sight where his son's life was taken brought instant tears to my eyes and made me think of my own son whom I love so much and am thankful to have in my life. I'm so sorry for all who lost lives and loves ones in that horrible act of violence. I can not understand any person who thinks that violence and torture are what any God would want from people in an effort to show support. I question any person who would believe in such nonsense. May God continue to bless America. If we as Americans remain strong and be our brothers keepers, we will continue to prevail.

all i can say is GET OUT! if you dont like the country , and can not understand what 9/11/2011 was about then you need to go live somewhere else that is equally sour as your beliefs. God love all those who do not know what they do , and bring light to their eyes and truth to their hearts.

Never said those who lost don't have my sympathy. Just saying it seems like light pollution to me.

I fully understand what 9/11 was about. Don't make assumptions about people Kurt. Pretty much just makes you an ass.

Yes I will miss the lights - like the lady in the harbor it is a strong symbol for all to see, that we, tho battered and bruised do not give up the fight.

JulieRees: I agree, if islam is the religion of peace, why the persistance of violence? Violence that mostly kills their own. As for brothers keepers - as long as they are fellow citizens.

Watch Sunday Night Football, they kept saying that the lights marked where the towers used to stand. Now, I've only been in lower Manhatten once, and seen the skyline from New Jersey 4 times. However, those lights obviously aren't shining out of the two reflecting pools. I wish all these talking heads trying to exude melodrama would spend more of the time understanding what is really going on and actually caring rather than pretending too.

You're right - I also noticed that the tribute lights are too far from the new WTC construction to be coming from the reflection pools. According to a Wikipedia update from yesterday, the lights are on top of the ProPublica office on One Exchange Plaza.

I think they are so beautiful... I never saw them until now but I am sure it must of have been an amazing sight for those who were able to see it every year. Truly remarkable for me...
