Participants in the "Occupy Wall Street" demonstrate around Wall Street attempting to disrupt pedestrian flow for financial workers to get to work, in New York, on September 19. Hundreds of demonstrators, who descended on Lower Manhattan on Saturday with the aim of staying at least until the open of the New York Stock Exchange on Monday, had planned to turn the area into an "American Tahrir Square."

Oh, you mean MSNBC finally noticed whats been happening for the entire weekend? LOL
I don't get it! WHY isn't MSNBC covering this BIG TIME on TV?
This is getting pretty serious now:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moD2JnGTToA
Today, police corralled and maced a female protester from less than 2 feet away, directly in her face.
She was just standing there, and when she turned toward the officers, one of them sprayed her.
This is definitely NOT the "democracy" my sons joined the military to defend.
GO FOR IT PEOPLE!You should be allowed to protest right on wall street, not blocks away. This is YOUR RIGHT JUST AS MUCH AS THE ONES OCCUPYING WALL STREET!
Oh and yes Alan O.is exactly right about MSNBC!
Gotta love how MSNBC buries this on a photoblog, just so they can say "we covered it" without REALLY covering it.
Twitter is being heavily censored. Hashtags for this protest are not trending. And when you attach them to other trending hashtags, those popular hashtags stop trending as well.
The most common tags are:
#OccupyWallStreet
#TakeWallStreet
#OurWallStreet
#TakeTheSquare
And NONE of them are trending at THOUSANDS of tweets per hour. The mainstream media has placed a blanket blackout over NYC.
However, SOME independent outlets are trying to provide support and coverage. But the only major media outlet providing any substantive coverage is Al Jazeera:
http://stream.aljazeera.com/story/us-protesters-rally-occupywallstreet
Its pretty pathetic when a Middle Eastern news network provides more and better coverage of an American event of such importance, than the media residing on our own soil.
why is this? oh yea cause american media is pretty corporate. and who runs america? oh yea, the corporations. LA REVOLUTION!!!!
Time means a lot, and can save money!
Reinstate the former Bush taxes, for all!
give 17 million low earners and unemployed 500.00 dollars per week for two years tax free !
let them work w/o penalties while collecting this 500.00. but pay taxes on the work they do.
Give states 1 or 2 billion dollars to hire workers police etc. not to be paid back!
start doing infrastructure in the country, that is needed.
Stop the squabbling, this will be a good time to cut waste, and spending w/o causing a problem to the recovery.
stop all aid to these 17 million people for three years!
start to reform the tax system, broaden the base, loopholes etc.
sit back and relax for two years and watch the economy grow, while being able to eliminate the budget deficit in less than two years!
while saving future money that would be spent if these 17 million were to fall behind even more if they do not get the help they need now!
watch manufacturing grow because of demand from all the spending!
watch revenues grow because of the greater intake of taxes that this would generate!
then finally pay me my commission when the recovery takes place!!!
then If there is other things that would work feel free to add to this plan!!!
lets add in free college for people who the govt says, according to the FAFSA, their family should be able to put them through college. But in thereal world, they have medical bills and have a large family. SO actually they cant
Havent seen anything in the news about this, not the main stream news, makes one wonder! are they trying to hide it from people???
The answer is a Big Resounding YES!
I've seen this on ABC, NY1, the NY Times, and MSNBC. What are you talking about? If they gather some more people, stay at it, and drop the ridiculous Che Guevara and 'abolish capitalism' signs I've seen, people will take them a lot more seriously. It wasn't left-wing squatters on Tahir square, they were from all walks of life.
wow, How did this not get said on tv???? thank God for the internet, Goodbye unamerican tv, and your corporate crappy commercials shame on all of you, totally a shock to be. Yes to the protesters, about time we show them we are sick of the way, politicians, corporations are doing business, I am happy to see this, hopefully it will continue to congress YAHOO!
time to let the dogs out
It's about time this generation stands up for what they believe in! We protested everything that was "unfair" and "unjust" in the late 60's and early 70's. Way to go!!!!!!
Say Gloria............how you doin'....you've been nominated for the Best Immitation of Trotsky for 2011..........
From the pictures you can see that the demonstrators haven't work a day in their life. They don't know what work is and they think that they don't need it since the government is going to give them enough money. This money will come from the rich. Just remember the rich do not keep their money in a mattress but they invest it in businesses that will create jobs and one day, one of these demonstrators will wake up and realize that he would like to have a job and make something of himself and have better things in life besides sleeping on the ground and smoking some pot. Young people, wake up!
what planet are you living on
Didn't anyone ever teach you not to judge something, or someone for that matter, by thier appearance? I feel sorry for you, if that's how you navigate through day to day life.
Anyways, what I think is unfair is that "the rich" (basically people who invest thier money into products and buisnesses) are taxed less on thier profit from investments then people who sacrifice thier bodies daily to help keep the infrastructure of this country intact. Where is the respect for the people who DON'T have some great glamourous job? They go to work everyday and work as hard as they possibly can for the little money they make, and by they I'm also referring to myself and almost everyone I know. I'm not asking for a hand-out or someone to give me free money, or pay my bills all I want is to be payed and taxed fairly compared to the actual work I do. Is it fair for someone to go to work everyday and bust thier ass to make less money AND have more money taken away from them for taxes then someone who most likely had money in the first place to invest and then just sits around waiting for thier stocks to rise? I know that there's more to it than that but when was the last time they broke thier arm working or lost a finger at work? ............just saying
What i mean by more money is a higher percentage of thier income.
Go back to sleep Nigel... you don't have a clue
I Work 56 hrs a week against my will and I cant even afford to fix my leaky roof. I Have no time. I am a slave. You don't know what you are talking about.
Republican Rhetoric - repeat it enough time and people believe it.
It's about time people starting standing up from the bottom up. The Trickle down economic concept was about people getting pissed on. Now that the greed of multinational corporations has manifest itself for what it truly is, an uncontrollable, unpredictable and heartless monster. The government created and protected this Frankenstein that has ravaged this country, and left so many citizens in a hopeless state. Now the citizens must put the "Wall Street" beast down. If the media won't cover this groundswell event, then maybe we should protest the media also. Waiting for the protest to start here in Los Angeles, Chicago, Miami, Houston, and every city and person affected. If you are not working in New York, and can read this, then go protest "Wall Street". Stand Up, or, lay down.

floridians unite, any up for a pilgrimage to wall st. to give support? or lets start our own here in orl. every state should start their own. dont let this be a fad that wall st. will just laugh at, tell them we really mean it
The USA needs more demonstrators like these i doubt though it will change any behavior patterns WALL STREET possesses unfortunately.
This, my friends are the embers of what may one day be the flames of change. Unfortunately, that day is still a ways off yet. Look at the scale of the 60's protests and what change can come when grass root causes come to social prominence. Wide scale belief that something needs to change is not enough. Without the general masses embracing that belief and also the need for change, things will continue to roll along as they have been. Of late the truth in an old saying has never been more correct. He who holds the gold makes the rules. All that is being asked for it appears is a level playing field. I can’t think of a single historical society where a small number of extremely wealthy and a large population of poverty has held a long term nation together for any significant amount of time before those embers burst into flames.
Now this is what I believe represents the "Tea Party." Not what the Republicans say it is or the Democrats propaganda says it is. Everyday people are fed up with business as usual in Washington DC. Both parties should beware. The day of reconing is upon them.
These people are all idiots. Who exactly will provide most jobs if not corporations? These people need to lay off conspiracy theories and get a reality check. Think about some of the accusations. Wall Street is responsible for poverty? Ridiculous. If corporations are responsible for poverty, who the heck is responsible for creating wealth? American Capitalism is morally wrong? Then how does the United States dole out money hand over fist for foreign countries? No county has been more generous than the United States with it's finances. That is a fact. What is also a fact, is that what created that wealth isn't just mom-and-pop businesses that employ one or two people. Wake up idiot savants.
Actually Mitch. About 75 Percent of jobs in America are produced from small business and that includes mom and pop shops. Sorry but maybe you should take a business class before you start giving the corporations that much credit. Yes they bring a lot of revenue to the US and also a substantial portion of jobs. However, they also bring a lot of corruption both to general business and to our government. With all the money they throw around for lobbying they can pretty much get any crooked politition to vote for a law that is in there interest regardless of how it affects the majority of the American people. And I am sorry to say it because it is shame-full. But most politicians are more interested in lining there own pockets and collecting money for there elections to stay in office than they are in actually doing there job and supporting the will and beliefs of the American citizens who they are supposed to represent. When a politician is more worried about keeping his job than doing his job and will start bending to the will of the lobbyists. Then it is time for him to leave office.
You mean the "jobs" the "corporations" took over seas with the blessing of both parties? Where they exploit the working people who are thankful to have a "job" but without benefits such as an 8 hour work day, medical benefits, unemployment benefits etc?
this is what we need all over the USA at the same time!!!!!!!! Politicians, wall street manipulation/SHORTS, sec fraud, greedy ceos/investment banks are all steering OUR jobs off the continent and weakening our economy. the economy is the way it is because THEY have been controlling it to make them millions and put US in debt by the trillions. We need them to realize we are the heart and soul of the US. NOT THEM!
I am so happy to see what I hope is the beginning of a grass-roots movement to change politics as usual and to make everyone pay their own fair share towards the "upkeep" of this country! I still want to see some heads roll for the housing collapse due to a bunch of greedy corporate types... not a word about any criminal charges for behaviors that brought the entire world economy to its knees!! Instead they were bailed out and now they are once again getting their multi-million dollar bonuses each year and they won't loan any of that money to small businesses and it's almost impossible to get a home loan anymore! Greedy beyond belief!!
I hope each state will have enough people cooperate and lead a charge to let the politicians and the greedy corporations know we have had enough!! Let's not forget the insurance companies that only want to insure you if there is no risk and they don't want to pay claims... just collect premiums. And then if you ever have a claim, they cancel your policy and you are no longer insurable!!! Why isn't government intervening where it NEEDS to intervene to protect the "people" and not the corporations!!
Yes, greedy corporations have taken most of the American jobs overseas where labor is cheap and they don't have to pay benefits!! This is supposed to be so we can get things cheaper!! HA!!! I haven't seen anything get any cheaper... just corporate bottom lines going up, up, up and CEO bonsues skyrocketing. There is no CEO worth his $750,000 per year job and $2 million dollar bonus each year, which by the way he doesn't get unless the bottom line goes up! (Cut jobs, cut jobs, cut jobs... bottom line goes up!!) And if nobody has a job, it really doesn't matter how cheap it is... we can't buy it!! But corporate America doesn't care... they are positioning themselves for the huge growth of the Chinese economy where there are 1.4 billion consumers!! They won't need us to consume their products! How can these companies even call themselves American companies????
Didn't mean to get on my soap box but I am so sick of what has been unfolding in this country for so long and we as voters/taxpayers have let it go on... we keep re-electing the same ole same ole and we sit back and complain and don't act! I would love to see all members of Congress thrown out of office at the next election (if not before!) These self-serving greedy b*@$ards have shown their asses quite long enough. Not a single one of them is concerned about "Americans"... only their individual party lines and their own little back yards. I am so sick of the words Democrat and Republican, I don't know what to do! We need "human beings" in office and we keep re-electing the same old silver-spoon elitists.
I'm not by any means poor and have enjoyed a good life but here we are retired with the threat of losing our social security benefits or having the benefits reduced, my adult children have no health insurance and cannot afford it, my mother's forced into Medicare and most doctor's don't even want to accept Medicare patients. I watch as other elderly people choose between food and medicine... people who have worked their whole lives. I watch as insurance is cancelled or refused for the very people who need it most! I watch our schools turn out kids from high school who can't even read and write. I listen to the news reports telling us American kids are scoring well below our Asian counterparts. WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR PRIORITIES AND OUR MONEY WE GAVE TO OUR GOVERNMENT FOR YEARS TO ENSURE WE WERE ABLE TO RETIRE WITH DIGNITY????
Amazing this has been going on for a week now and not ONE prime time show on MSNBC has covered it. So much for "Mr. Populism" Ed Schultz taking a stand. Or Rachel Maddow's claims of being completely free to cover anything (it's obvious a memo went out saying this could NOT be covered).
Take your protest where it belongs, the White House.
we have to get rid the anti government people that we elected, we pay them to try and destroy our government why do we have to pay them? why? if they dont like government then they should get some other job. i resent every penny they are paid, MY TAX DOLLARS ITS MY MONEY. dont take your salary and then try to bring down our country.
Just cause you took pictures don't mean you shared it 'making it news'! Which mean no one heard about it. I know cause I asked people if they heard....no one had except internet savy people who listen to news other than MSM.... Playing it off as you heard and shared won't be believed by anyone who aren't sheeple.
