I guess it's no surprise that the Coast Guard decided to refer to its new high-tech Legend class cutters as "National Security Cutters".
Gulflive.com reports on the construction of the Stratton.

U.S. Coast Guard's newest National Security Cutter, Stratton is anchored near Annapolis, Maryland, before heading to Baltimore, on November 1. The National Security Cutter (NSC) is the largest and most technically advanced class of cutter in the Coast Guard, with capabilities for maritime homeland security, law enforcement and national defense missions.

You go you Coast'ies !!! Hopefully, we can see her in Los Lagos Grande
I served in the US Navy from 1956 to 1975 and retired with 20 years service. During that time I never really had much to say about or think about the US Coast Guard. I thought they were mainly used to rescue 'dumb rich civilians' when they and their yachts got in trouble! Over the years, however, I have come to realize that the United States Coast Guard is involved in almost all, if not all, aspects of protecting our open sea borders, dealing with all levels of illegal immigration, drug, and arms traffic, I now know that their duties go way beyond that, and include many, many real rescue operations at sea. They are at the forefront of hurricane disaster assistance and relief, and are the 'first on the scene', as they were with Katrina in New Orleans.
I did not know that our Coast Guards sometimes deploy to help the Navy on special assignments. I'm glad they do! I am happy to see that our aging fleet of Coast Guard Ships are being upgraded after being at the bottom of the 'Priority List' for such a long time.
I now know, and understand, that American young men and women, both officer and enlisted, are a totally dedicated and respected force, dedicated to the protection of our country, and our life of Freedom. In my book, they are all heroes, equally, like those of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, because all have sworn under oath to "give all" if necessary, to defend the United States of America!
I salute you all! Retired US Navy SCPO. Thank you all!
