Poaching is the biggest threat to the earths creatures, followed by land-development and/or expansion of grazing land for cattle (which in the end results in land-development so they're inter-related.

Land development destroys wildlife habitat, but it can be done harmoniously with nature, so long as the developer is conscientious and cares more for the wildlife than his bottom dollar...... good luck with that one.... But Poaching, poaching is the plague for all species, all over the world.

For the poor Rhino, if it's not the Chinese grinding-down their horn for an assumed afrodisiac (I say assumed, because I've never tried it), it's some Arab Sheikh wanting a nice Rhino horn knife handle to give his son on his 16th birthday or transition to manhood, it's a cultural thing.... it always is.

Been to Africa a number of times, South Africa, Tanzania, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe or simply, "Hell" if your a white African farmer). I won't go into the White - Black thing in Africa, that's a whole other problem, but I will say that if American's think their own country has a bad case of racism, they ain't seen nothing yet. If your white, and living in Africa, better watch your back, shame that @!$%# doesn't get reported or get the national attention it does here in the states, but the African media is tightly controlled.

Not a peta person, but actually mdsj, it makes sense to attack "what we eat here in the states" as that happens to be where the greatest profit is made and where the greatest impact on ecology and the environment lies, like Duphas said, grazing land for cattle is really one of the biggest causes of rainforest deforestation, disappearance and displacement of thousands of native species endangered or not. I hope this is more than a publicity stunt by the Chinese, and that they are actually (and finally) cracking down on those who are investing and participating in the import (and export) of illegal animals and products (that aren't their precious pandas). If the money isn't there for these things, the illegal poaching might stop. As the largest nation, China could have a HUGE impact and influence on changes that we must make to not only further our ability to inhabit this planet, but also on saving it. They will put their ships between a whale and a harpoon, but will they put themselves between a rhino or an elephant and poachers with a gun? I have not ever heard of this. They could make a difference if they would stop harping on minor things.

And so, China and the other Asian countries who believe that ingesting rhino horn is good for their sex life, when the last rhinoceros is gone, what then will your old men turn to? Personally, I'd prefer to shoot those that purchase the endangered animal parts. Kill enough of them, there won't be any poachers/traffickers left since noone would purchase their products.

There is still a ban on ivory but poachers and the black market have not vanished. There are plenty unethical people who will pay money for black market/illegal ivory. Elephants are slaughtered for their ivory and left to die. These humans are creatures that should be instantly eliminated. We are too tolerant and it will cost us the extinction of magnificent animals. We are all guilty of such a disgrace, one way or another. We need stronger laws and we need to loudly speak out every chance we get.

It might be easier to understand if the animal was killed as a food source. Some countries consider dog a food source. These animals were killed for one thing only and their carcasses left to rot. No culture or society should tolerate that. In addition, I don't care if they hate me because I'm American. If the Chinese government were better able to feed their hungry and stimulate jobs, this may not exist! Not only that, in Hong Kong where these poaching acts were at least caught by conscientious security guards, many people now live in cage like housing that are not much bigger or different than Veterinarian animal cages. It is hard to know what direction our civilization is going in, but the problem has been there for decades. Many cite the homeless surviving the New York City winters by sleeping on sidewalk exhaust grids, to keep from freezing to death, as being one of the signs that humans are, have been loosing their sense of humanity for years being cause for real concern. As in a war, animals are the first to suffer and the last to recover. Maybe, the pollution will kill us all off eventually.
