'The days of apathy are over': Robert Reich speaks to Occupy Berkeley protesters

Reuters reports from BERKELEY, Calif:

Robert Reich speaks to Occupy Cal demonstrators in Berkeley on November 15.

Protesters at the University of California, Berkeley, pitched tents Tuesday night in defiance of campus officials a week after police removed a nascent anti-Wall Street encampment.

The late-night escalation by students and other protesters followed a day of peaceful demonstrations against economic inequality and cuts to higher-education spending and set the stage for a possible showdown with police.

Former U.S. Labor Secretary Robert Reich hailed the Berkeley protesters in a late-night speech from the steps of Sproul Hall, invoking the leaders of the 1964-1965 "Free Speech Movement" at Berkeley.

"The Occupy movement is beginning to respond to the crisis in democracy," he said. "You are already succeeding. ... The days of apathy are over, folks. Once this has begun, this cannot be stopped and will not be stopped."

Shortly after 8 p.m. local time, activists huddling in a "general assembly" meeting voted overwhelmingly to re-establish an encampment in defiance of campus rules. Within about 90 minutes, at least 15 tents were erected and many other protesters pulled out sleeping bags.

"We will not be moved!" shouted a speaker who announced the vote. "Power to the people. We are here to stay." Read more.

Wow protesting in Berkeley, how unusual, and who f&*king cares. I like the dried up old boomer, you go girl, you are still relevant!!!!

...and your hateful remark is relevant because? Boomers make up a pretty large percentage of the country and if you're lucky (which I doubt you'll live past 60 with your disgusting, negative attitude) you too will be that age too. Boomers won't be around for long, but many of them have children + grandchildren they are fighting for. Have some respect. Your comment adds no value to what's happening and just shows how ignorant + childish you are.

I agree with you superfax. That boomer is part of the generation that got us in this mess in the first place so she doesn't have much of a leg to stand on when it comes to these protests. I am also surprised that roof didn't come crashing down as i'm sure it isn't rated for that kind of weight.

I have a novel idea for a way to get all those "dirty hippies" from demonstrating. Why doesn't the government start addressing the issues of income inequality, corporate corruption, campaign finance reform, corporate personhood, too-big-to-fail banks, voter suppression and union-busting? If they did all that, the "dirty hippies" wouldn't have anything to protest. Simple!

Ah, yes the old Berkeley hippie crowd, they are always protesting something. I protest all those bums wanting me to pay higher taxes so they can sit on their asses and not work. And I'm not rich, I barely get by.

Until they come up with a coherent message or solution to the problem they won't get my sympathy.

At least the TP has a message, OWS doesn't seem to.

If they are for less corporatism, corruption in government and the end to bailouts I don't see the difference between the TP and OWS, except that one goes after the source and the other goes after the effect.

Skiddy: I'm no bum. I'm educated, employed full-time, own my own home, pay my taxes on time and I fully support occupations across the country. I'm fighting to stop the deterioration of the middle class, including you, whether you like it or not!

Anyone else want to stand up and be counted as one of the 'dirty hippies' fighting for economic equality?

Okay Occupiers, so give me your list of demands. What? Legalize marijuana? Fine. Anything else? Okay, turn away from Capitalism and embrace Marxist ideals where everyone has exactly the same amount and there are no losers (and no winners) and we lose what this country what literally founded upon? Um, how about you just enjoy your bong hits and let the grown ups continue to make this nation great, will that work for you?

Oh, and all of you feel free to take showers, you all look terribly gross and smelly. How third world do you want to appear? It's really not a good look. At all.

Funny thing about Berkeley, is that most if not all of the people who actually live there are the 1%, look at the housing prices in Berkeley and then tell me these folks are not part of the problem.

Let's protest because we are not happy with our position in life! It is someone else's responsibility, not our own! Let's sit on our butt and beg for a handout instead of working for it! How bout ya'll go occupy a job and make yourself middle class?

Evidently, the Marxists will never stop until they have destroyed everything about America that made us the envy of the world. The poor produce the highest number of offspring, which they can't feed, and then DEMAND that someone else take care of THEIR RESPONSIBILITY.

The ONLY way we will save ANY vestige of this country is secession. We MUST split into two parts: the Marxist states, and the free states. No amount of debate will solve the growing gulf between the two schools of thought. The Marxist states can confiscate all the wealth from their rich (but the rich will leave for the free states if at all possible), but they will burn through that money in no-time, and then they will be broke.

The free states will have to heavily invest in a strong border wall to keep out all the people trying to sneak in from the Marxist states for a "better life" once they learn they have been sold a lie. We cannot let them in. If these people are willing to force Marxism down the throats of the unwilling, they deserve to suffer the consequences they get.

    @Skiddy, machinehead, et. al.

Whatever makes you think these protesters are modern day hippies who refuse to work. Ya know, you couldn't be more wrong. People who make blanket descriptions of many things in this world are, for the most part, ignorant. What you just said bears absolutely no resemblance to reality.

Occupy protesters are people of all ages and all walks of life. They include, among others, Iraq war veterans who fought for this country and have every right to exercise the rights they fought to preserve. Shamar Thomas and Scott Olsen come to mind. Many protesters are teachers, longshoremen, firefighters, and even some politicians. Note that this article was about Robert Reich, a former cabinet member from the Clinton era and an economist. I have a younger brother who lives in Berkeley and has a thriving law practice in Oakland who fully supports the Occupy Oakland branch of the movement. By the way, he's a 1%er. He and everybody else is protesting the unfairness in our society - how we are subject to a "ruling class" that doesn't represent the people, only their corporate owners.

The type of people you refer to as "hippies" are present at these venues - people who actually don't want to work, but they are an insignificant minority of the protesters as I understand it. The vast majority of people at these protest are 1.)working; 2.)want to work; and 3.)are alarmed by the exploding income gap.

You say you're "hardly getting by". Can't you see how you're being exploited? Or maybe you dropped out of high school and are getting what you deserve. Graduated from college? You're still being exploited if you are "barely getting by". Maybe you make a lot of money and squander it at Vegas or Atlantic City. Maybe you make a good income and squander your money in some other way.

Here's the Deal, Skiddy, and MachineHead, and roos7a, and you others out there who are fact-challenged - who have belief systems that are not well grounded in fact. You can sit there and carp about something you either don't understand or are unwilling to understand - perhaps because of your ingrained prejudices. There's paradigm shift beginning in our society that has the potential to lay the groundwork for a society where everyone has a chance to get ahead. This would be the society our Founding Fathers envisioned. This groundswell has the potential of nothing short of giving "WE THE PEOPLE" our country back (to steal a worn-out phrase from the fringe right).

Question? I see you say a" society where everyone has a chance to get ahead". Is there going to be some set of rules that stops someone from getting to far ahead of others. Will it stop new Gates,Allens,Waltons etc. from taking what they have created from becoming a new Microsoft, Apple, WalMart. Giving them a wealth that makes them a 1% of the 1%ers. Also the large part of our Founding Fathers owned slaves.

Well, well, well. I see the arrogant trollers are alive and well here, posting their egotism at every chance. I'm one of those boomers someone has already trashed. Fine. I have been very disappointed with my generation to put it mildly. We learned nothing, apparently, from the lie of the Gulf of Tonkin that led to needless slaughter of tens of thousands of Americans in Vietnam. Imagine that? Our government lied to us? Nothing has changed. So we protested back then. And we protested the lying social path scum bag Richard Nixon too! He should have gone to jail, but at least he had the decency to resign before all the sh*t hit the fan.

But then we got The Actor, General Electrics trained mouthpiece, Ronald Reagan. Oh, and a "new" economic philosophy: Supply Side Economics. Or, as better said by George H. W. Bush in the 1979 campaign, "Voo-doo economics." Of course, we now know it has failed our economy by deregulating and rewriting laws so that we are left with retail and fast-food jobs while manufacturing jobs were off-shored! At the same time, the new laws allowed for mega-mergers, union busting, and the collective prostitution of banks and Wall Street. All of this amounted to an investors wet dream of making money off of "other people's" money (read mortgage debts) and we know where that led us. But have no fear! Bush and Obama made sure those investors on Wall Street and in the "too big to fail" banks had their bad bets covered. Meanwhile....it is business as usual for those who have money and those scrambling for what few descent paying jobs there are!

Someone forgot to tell the "geniuses" of the Chicago School of Supply Side economics that supply does not do you much good when the middle class (remember them?) does not have the resources to buy! Oops, just a little detail they forgot in logic.

Remember when the wealthy were glad to pay their share of taxes? From 1945 to 1970, the top tax bracket averaged around 85-90% tax! That is not a typo btw. So now the "new economy" has them paying less than half of what they paid during the Golden Years of America's economic output of the 1950's and 1960's. Oh, but don't let that bother you....because Ronnie Reagan said the "rich needed more money to create millions of good paying jobs in America!" Remember that BS promise? Oh yeah, we are just swimming in all those wonderful jobs with great benefits, are we not?!!!

So enjoy the "new economy" where our government is nothing more than the NASCAR drivers of Wall Street and the too big to fail banks! Honestly, our "public servants" should wear the decals and patches on their clothes so we can REALLY see who they "represent" in D.C.

I think the only way we will ever begin to get a real government that helps our country is to GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS. But I won't hold my breath on that, for it has been MONEY that has fueled this entire meltdown and destruction of the middle class. Check that, GREED and MONEY.

Nice post Russell-2157151...however, there are just too many lazy thinking people in this country who would not know they were being exploited if it was written on their arse!!!

General Electrics trained mouthpiece, Ronald Reagan.

    Like this one?

Oh? You were saying? I don't recall Ronald Reagan having the President of GE whispering into his ear at every news briefing, convention, and meeting?

Any reason why you didn't put down this President as the mouthpiece? Oh he's Democrat and thus on your side. I get it. Just like the Democrats were against Vietnam too... Oh wait they started that war and Nixon ended it.

I don't understand why the OWS is protesting Wall Street when it's this President and the Liberal Congress who was giving them money... Shouldn't they be protesting this President and the Democratic Congress (like uhmm Pelosi) for giving these Corporations all this money unless in reality this Protest is more about Politics and trying to keep Democrats in office. There is no way that could be the real reason for these protests could it.

All I see is a bunch of people with Jersey's. The moment it get's a little hot they'll just take them off and claim to be on your side all along. The best picture that captures this moment is the older lady and that kid behind her. Nothing but blank stares and idolization. Did somebody say brainwashed?

(Yes I know Republicans have the house after the Democraps got kicked out. Now, if we can only kick out all those who were in office and voted for the Bail Outs and Stimulus)

Socialism is a FAILED system and it fails with 100 per cent accuracy.

This is not spin just fact. Open a history book.

How can "educated" people fail to know history?

And knowing history why do they wish the cancer of socialism to metastasize in our country any more widely than it already has?

Appallingly, the hogs at the trough in the banks who shifted their casino-gambling losses to the public while keeping all the money in the house and in government who have created this mess will almost certainly never be brought to justice. They have already gotten away with the money which is no doubt offshore in obscured accounts. And they control the forces with the guns here. This is a no-win situation.

In such a situation about all good that is left is to create one's own modest opportunities in one's own small enterprise as best one can. That would amount to more at the end of the day than understandable but futile protests and justifiable but impotent anger.

On one occasion of personal conversation with Robert Reich, he was certainly an interesting man with the conviction of his ideas and ideals. But this is not the 1960s in America. Americans could afford, or wrongly thought they could afford, the self-indulgence of socialist experiments in the 1960s et seq. That clearly was not the case and America is now in the ditch. Note the Chinese have done the exact opposite - they have embraced a sort of capitalism - and they have advanced themselves as the US continues its decline.

These demonstrations may or may not have the desired political effect for the few at the top who are agitating them, but the poor schmucks who are out in the parks will unfortunately receive no benefit for their trouble - no jobs, no better future economic prospects, only arrests and bad colds.

Better to spend time trying to find a way to create your own opportunity. The government will not create an opportunity for anyone; the government is broke and broken.

    Just one opinion.

You libs still don't get it! Socialism doesn't work! How many times are you idiots going to put this country through the ringer before you understand that your ideology is the problem along with your sorely misdirected anger at Wall Street! You should be protesting in front of the White House and the Congress as they are the ones giving money to Wall Street for their lobbyist votes! If you can look at the condition of France and Greece and any other Socialist country out there and still maintain that Socialism works...you are dumber than dumb and we should ship you over there immediately so you can suffer the truth firsthand. Morons!

Look, Russell, I'd rather represent myself than have you people represent me. I don't want handouts and freebies, I'd rather work for and be responsible for myself. I'm tired of paying for the non productive, I don't care who you say is out there protesting. I'm no Tea Partier, but looking at the pictures of both them and the "Occupiers" it appears the Tea Partiers are the ones who want jobs, and the "Occupiers" freebies. So go out and represent yourself, leave me alone.

It is not so much wallstreet we need to worry about it is the way we keep electing these politicians that serve only their own goals against what the people want. How about we start a cause that gets to the root of the problem. How about everyone try to vote the career politicians out and set term limits. Instead we get a nice puppet show about occupying wall street. As for the rest who think this is some big vehicle for change. However, these very "Occupy" camps are become more newsworthy than the actual reason for the protest. In a few weeks, most people aren't going to remember the initial reason the Occupy protests started.

And as I read articles regarding these elaborate protests, there is less-and-less information about the focus of the protest movements. All readers are getting is that they are apart of the 99% and that Wall Street needs to be punished.

@Tarzan....What "Government Subsidies" do the 47% you refer to live on? It can't be social security or unemployment, because those are paid for by the person receiving them or the company they worked for.

If you are referring to welfare, and all the various other food, energy, and temporary assistance that's available through the US Dept. of Health and Human Services the percentage of people getting help is about 8% of the total population that receives some form of assistance with 1.7% receiving most of their income (50% or more) from these programs.

And FYI, people whe get SS and unemployment benefits still have to pay income taxes on the money they get.

HISTORY DOES NOT REPEAT, BUT IT DOES RHYME

In the 60's the movements were galvanized as a result of the Vietnam War. Today, war does not move the needle very much in terms of moving the masses, but INEQUALITY does. As with the hippies of yesteryear, if these "occupy folks" actually vote, expect sweeping changes over the next 20 years.

        @Tarzan -

It's interesting how you and other Ruish/FoxNews addicts keep bringing up this "53%" boilerplate. Since you limit yourself to the right wing propaganda machine for your "news", you are unlikely to understand why the 47% are not eligible to pay Federal Income Tax. You don't hear anything about how many or most workers still get they're meager paychecks bled for payroll taxes, how they pay a disproportionate share of they're meager income for sales tax, and so forth. Rush/Fox don't mention these little nuggets, do they? All they harp about is 53% 53% 53% 53% Occupy scum, kids who need to "go get a (non-existent) job", and so forth. Ya see, this isn't about the 53% meme, not in the least. It's about the destruction of the American Dream for so many. It's about the inability for millions to get ahead no matter how hard they work. It's about the inability of so many educated people to find a job, even people who have MBAs and technical degrees. This isn't about the inability of poets and English majors to become contributing members of society, it's about the Big Money power players steadily leaching the lifeblood from the American People at large. There is a cabal of plutocrats and corporate oligarchs that have "We The People" in a chokehold. It's about the "vampire squids" who own the congress and state houses acting only in their own self-interests and against the interests of the people at large. It's about how the candidates (from both parties) are, in effect, selected for us to vote on in elections. It takes access to money to even run for office. It's the discouraging knowledge that money-grubbing politicians may get voted out of office election after election, only to get replaced by the same sleazy style of "sponsored" politicians, sponsored by the plutocrats and corporate oligarchs. Can you say Davey and Chucky Koch? And they're not the only ones.

We have a mess on our hands, Tarzan. I don't mean the protesters, I mean the corrupt ruling class than is robbing us blind and running this country (and us along with it) into the ground. This is a sinking ship, and these protesters are furiously trying to bail us out. So Tarzan (and your ideological kin), are you going to grab a pail and start bailing, or are you going to just sit back and denigrate those who are trying to save the ship?

You aren't the sharpest pencil in the box are you?

You are either one of the lucky ones with a job or one of the drones the GOP uses to spew its talking points.

          Which one are you?

          a) drone

          b) lucky one

          Which one?

Tooljob - It's quite telling when people who have no jobs refer to those who do as being "lucky". The implication being that the only difference between those who have a job and those who don't is chance.

Nothing to do with talent, effort, attitude, performance. All to do with luck.

Don't get me wrong, there will always be cases where luck is the differentiating factor, but these will be exceptions not the rule.

It's unpolitically correct to say it, not to mention insensitive, but the cold hard truth is that the biggest differenciators between those who have jobs and those who don't is some combination of talent, effort, attitude and performance.

Your comment shows just how ignorant you are. You are easily lead and brain washed. Despite overwhelming evidence against your opinions you still cannot see the truth because it is clouded by your sheer lack of intelligence and compassion. If you are not among the top wealthy elite then you benefit from the causes the Occupy Movement is fighting for.

The average working people has lost control of the government to Corporations, Big Banks and Wealthy Special Interested groups.

All this so called "I want my Free ____" you speak of should be directed towards those groups not the average citizen and Occupy Movement.

Just to list a few of these Handouts/wellfare to those who don't need it but receive it because of their money and influence:

          1. Trillions in bailouts to the Big Banks and Financial institutions for making bad bets and fraudulent deals. They took the Tax Payers Money and was saved by it but yet the are still foreclosing on out of work homeowners and refused to help them. Yet it was those same Tax Payers who bailed them out.

          2. I bet you don't even know Corporations use tax breaks and tax payer subsidies to bring their businesses to certain states and cities. Most of them would have opened business there anyways. The so called small amount of jobs they claim they'll create for those states/cities don't even break even on the deal leaving the tax payers to foot the bills.

          3. How about Tax Breaks and subsidies at the Tax Payers expense for multi-billion dollar industries like Oil and Gas, Farm and Agricultural industries, Military Industrial complex.

          4. Trillions in Bush Tax Cuts for the Wealthy who still have not created any jobs in 10+ years. Well... they might hire a house keeper or lawn man if you consider that economically sound job creation.

          5. Tax Breaks for corporate Jet owners who were going to buy them anyways.

          6. Even the Universities are turning more towards being Corporations than Learning Institutions. You sign of for your studies and are told exactly the amount and credits it takes to complete, yet throughout the course of study the raise your credit requirements so they can squeeze more money out of the students.

SO, Gypsy, who are actually the welfare queens? Do your research and stop being lead and running with quick bumper sticker politics. While you support the 1% they care nothing about you.

          GYPSY!!!

You get it 100%! The LUCKY ones with a job? I live in a fairly conservative area, where the economy is struggling as well. I personally know several people who "sympathize" (?) with these protesters...one in particular is a gentleman who has a degree (online) in Web Design, who refuses to take any job that pays less than $100,000 a year (he says this is the national average salary for his field)...so he happily accepts food stamps (he has ten children) and refuses to do ANY work whatsoever...he's too "educated" to accept anything else. He'd be right at home at an Occupy camp...free food, free roof over your head, free love (oops, he's had plenty of that), don't lift a finger, even to bathe or throw your own trash away...his neighbors can attest to this behavior...it's called LAZINESS!!!...or "entitlement", which is the PC term for those in our society who feel that they are owed something, just for "being"...what a crock. I don't drive the kind of car I'd like to, my house is modest but meets my needs, my job doesn't make me wealthy but I make enough to pay my bills...here's a term that should be familiar to those boomers...GET A LIFE!!!

BS there are jobs out there. Just not ones these guys want. Hell go to Alabama and work in the fields. I hear they need the help. I know, I know, they pay sucks, the work is hard and you guys don't want to do it. I know, I know you have a family and can't just leave them to work in Alabama. Or course you can leave them to go live in a park. :)

You guys expect someone to invent a job that suits your needs. It doesn't work that way. You need to invent yourself to suit the jobs that are available to you. That is the way it has always worked and it is the way it will always work. If it takes 2 or more jobs to support yourself right now, sorry about that but that's the way it works out sometimes. If you work hard and prove yourself, you will find opportunities will open for you. Opportunities don't follow your expectations though. You have to be ready to grab them when they decide to come by.

The irony here is mind boggling.

Liberal, Euro-socialistic policies and idologies are the very things that have the economy in the state it is now, and yet here we have protesters who have supported and fueled such ideals protesting at a place that symbolises everything the Left stands for.

To see that this is how the privileged and educated among us think is borderline terrifying.

There is no way for this thing to end peacefully. I'm starting to think that Glenn Beck may have bee on to something when he predicted we would one day soon see scenes here in the US akin to the ones we saw in Egypt.

Is revolution actually on it's way? I'm beginning to think it might be.

We need to take the money from the filthy rich and this includes movie stars and sports figures and redisdribute the money to the less fortunate. And it's time we Stop electing Millionaires to the White House. We need to put a poor man in the President's chair. Otherwise things will never change.

Hmmm.... First off, I agree with the others, your first sentence does not make sense. The Financial Banking/Wall Street Derivative trading is what got us into this Depression. That was made possible by the repeal of the 1936 Glass-Steagall Financial Reform Act. We cannot move forward until that Act is reinstated, PERIOD! What Jon Corzine has done between GS and MF was CRIMINAL under Glass-Steagall, as well is should be. The current sitting congress, et. al. does not have the incentive, brains, nor backbone to write this type of law and pass it in the interest of the majority. Jon Corzine will not go to jail, but I'd bet my Daddy's WWII medals that he's got at least a billion stashed offshore. That is why we must demand reinstatement. That law protects us. That the 1% has taken this financial ripoff global is pure unadulterated greed. That in and of itself, coupled with the moniker of 'In God We Trust,' is the most dangerous game on earth. That MSM has reported disinformation regarding the individuals, sans corporations, that make up the OWS movement speaks for itself. I think it was J. Gould who said he could pay a person 50 bucks to beat another person, and so on and so on until the 99% were completely at war with each other. In essence, people 'outside' his narrow world were there to be manipulated for his own gain or amusement. They have pillaged and plundered, pushed the middle class to the wall and into poverty and the 'plurocratic' expectation is for us to just lay down? I think not and I will not. Glenn Beck is a hater. It is so easy to spew hate, no brainer. Glenn needs to take responsibility for the terrorism he perpetuates with that hatred. Such as that lunatic listener whom Glenn convinced that the ACLU were terrorists. Loaded his car with weapons and took off cross country to 'kill.' Got pulled over in CO where he proceeded to have a gunfight with the local authorities. Glenn spurred this guy on with his usual solution to the worlds problems, secular hate. Glenn slices and dices the population and then creates the 'hate solution', with guns by god, like Democracy is live and let die. Go OWS! Reinstate Glass-Steagall so we can prosecute these criminals and be done with these robber barons.

First off, we all did this! We all lived comfortably beyond our means knowing the government was not paying for all the services it was offering, which it could have in boon years. Very few people spoke up in this country for years, and in the best years only half of voting age adults voted. We have allowed ourselves to be spoon fed lies and half-truths that lead to ignorant, one-sided blaming like MickyMac and others on this forum.

Social security is a great example. Social security should never have been a problem. We just borrowed from money collected strictly for that program to pay for other programs that we could not afford, and to give tax breaks to rich people, and undermine the security of the middle class. If we don't do anything to fix Social Security it still pays 80% of its obligations in 50 years. If we hadn't raided those funds for 30+ years under both Democratic and Republican dominated governments it would have been solvent for the next 50 years and beyond.

I would also like to point out that this system has been bought and paid for by the wealthy. People that get up in arms about how much of the overall tax burden they have need to realize that these people bought the politicians that structured the regulatory system to their advantage, that structured the tax system to their advantage, that structured the trade system to their advantage. It has rewarded them in ways that no one on this blog can possibly comprehend.

So yes I think they should pay for the system they built for themselves. Capital gains needs to go up for the wealthy. Income tax needs to go up for the wealthy. Corporate income tax needs to come down for small business, and go up for companies that bought and paid for a system that has only served the wealthy for the last 30 years.

AND, We all need to accept that the government is just going to have to do less for us all. We are going to have to accept reduced Social Security, and Medicare, but more because we didn't pay for it when we could than because it was a bad idea to begin with. WE ALL DID THIS! And the cuts that the not so Super Committee is making are crap. 1.2 or 1.6 trillion dollars over the next 10 years is about 1% of GDP, that won't cut it. We need more revinue and more cuts. The non-partisan congressional budget office says a minimum of 11 trillion dollars.

If you are old enough to be commenting on this blog, you enjoyed the benefits of the deficit spending in this country in either artificially low taxes or unfunded benefits (if you disagree, you just are unaware of all the things that has bought for us), but we were living on our credit card. Either way, the standard of living in the United States has been artificially high, starting with Regan, and continuing with every government elected since. We all did this, and we need to undo it. We can do it gradually starting now, or follow the route of Greece in ten years.

I have been against OWS from the beginning. Not because of the problems they have identified. There are problems, the economy sucks, unemployment is a big problem, we are losing jobs overseas, many politicians and corporate execs are corrupt. We are bogged down in too many international problems. But OWS has no answers and practices a form of racism. They apply the actions of a few towards a group and blame the entire group. There are very good politicians, there are very community minded companies, there are wealthy people who got there with had work and ability.

And many of the problems were caused by the consumer. Everyone thought they deserve a house. And everyone who has a house thought the value was just going up. Everyone wants instant gratification. We have taken on too much debt. And everyone wants more salary, so much that corporate executives, with immense shareholder pressure, sent jobs over seas to cut costs.

Banks are ridiculed for making loans to people who couldn't afford them and are now criticized for not making loans. And nobody talks about the interest rates banks paid for the bail out money. Banks got nothing for free.

I would like to see OWS focus on solutions, not pointing out the obvious problems and pointing the finger. They need to look in the mirror for the perpetrator as well.

              @FtBrgtrnd,

Aren't you the least bit embarrassed in spouting Faux news talking points? Even the Faux shills have become more clever in pushing disinformation.

It's just pathetic, and even traitorous that folks like you continue to state what are basically lies, but what I don't understand is; to what end?

Do you really believe that a system where everything is bought (bribed) and sold to the highest bidder is truly our American way?

You want solutions?, Well they start with discussions-in a Democracy.

Please enlighten me, where are the lies in what I said.

You mention something about going to the highest bidder. In business, it works that way. If you run a business, there is a profit incentive in capitalism. Isn't there? I agree there is corruption and bribery in this country. There is much more in other countries. But we certainly have too much.

In countries where there is no profit incentive, like the old USSR, a different system existed. I would comment that anyone who supports that system is a traitor to the country I have risked my life for. And I have risked my life for free speech, just like OWS is exercising. It's their lack of solutions I don't like.

              Ok I'll try............

"But OWS has no answers" There have been numerous answers. Reinstate Glass Seagall comes to mind. "and practices a form of racism" Are bankers/Wall St. a race?

"There are very good politicians" Name one that has not been to the trough. "There are very community minded companies", Again name one that didn't profit from their philanthropy. "There are wealthy people who got there with hard work and ability." Name one Banker or Wall St. CEO who succeeded without exploiting their employees or the planet.

              Want more?

Wages for working folk have stagnated over the last 30 years, CEO's up around sixfold. Banks made loans to anyone because they made billions in FEES and then packaged the loans, sold them to investors. Kinda like how you played hot potato as a kid. Remember AIG? They got caught holding the potato. And by the way, this is still going on. Banks Paying interest? Sorry thats another red herring. These investment houses that were bailed out with our tax dollars, changed their designation to "Banks" so they could take money from the discount window at nearly 0% and buy treasurys at 3%! Get it yet?

So do you feel comfortable knowing you risked your life for corporate interests? For politicians that are bought and paid for by the 1%? I know I'm not........... Is aiding and abetting the enemy in a time of war not treason? They are being physically attacked while exercising their rights, why aren't you there?

              World English Dictionary

              traitor (ˈtreɪtə)

              n

a person who is guilty of treason or treachery, in betraying friends, country, a cause or trust, etc

Is working against your country's best interest a solution, or an offence?

A bunch of naive stooges at these rallies. They certainly don't understand where the fundamental problems are for this country (i.e. excessive government regulation killing jobs/market).

Sprinkle in the absolute appalling behavior (i.e. urination, defecating) and you have the perfect symbol of the type of people that represent the liberal factions today. I hope democrats like Reich and others keep supporting this insanity -- I want Dems tied to OWS as much as possible ....so that the voters clearly remember what the liberal dems stand for when it's time to vote next November !

You are the naive stooge if you think deregulation will bring back jobs and bolster the stock market. We need to have government regulation because the financial industry has proven that it refuses to properly regulate itself.

Keep it up. If all out revolution is what it takes to create a country for the people and not for the Corps who lobby for loopholes and tax breaks. Then so be it.

Sadly, I think that money for corps and Politicians is more important than anything. Time to change how laws are made. Lobbying should only be allowed for the people not companies.

Obviously the way it is now is NOT working and as it evols more to corps and ultra rich, the worse it gets. Need to back it up to the way it was about a century ago.

@Sarah - Because government regulation is working ABSOLUTE wonders for us right now, especially on the financial side of things. (sarcastic) The government that you believe is "helping", is the one who allowed things to get this way in the first place. Now, the government OWNS these entities and can do whatever they please.

Now, before I go on. Might I ask what's contributed to our nation's debt nearly hitting the ceiling? Oh, that's right, our GOVERNMENT. But seeing as how our government can't maintain their own debts and balance their fricken budget, I'll be damned if I want them in charge of financial institutions. The financial "industry" isn't going to "regulate itself" because it is GOVERNMENT PROPERTY! And you see how carefree with money they can be! It'd be a good idea to have our financial institutions either restored or allowed to fall flat out on their face and be done with them. Our government is only going to drive these companies into the ground (CORZINE!!).

Now, to be fair, deregulation doesn't sound all that bad, but you're right in one area. It won't save our economy nor will it create jobs or bolster the stock market. It might save it from the threat of our government however. It least then, we can safely say it wasn't the government, again, who screwed something else up (gee... come to think of it, I don't think there's much left they can manage to screw up??)

Seriously? Forget about Wall Street for a minute, some companies WILL KILL FOR PROFIT. With no oversight, there are manufacturers, energy producers, mining corporations, and probably a host of other companies that will kill you and your kids, or make you infertile, or make you demented, or just stack all the corporate profits in the pockets of the couple of people running the place. They will destroy the environment, which will kill in both the short and long run. It has happened many times already, prompting much of the regulation you want to get rid of.

Corporate poluters of the worst kind are paying for the message that it is excessive regulation that is killing the economy (CAN YOU SAY KOCH BROTHERS?). They bought your polliticians who also tell you that. They bought your news network, who also tell you that. They own the message and messengers.

Do corporations that want deregulation tell you how it will get people to buy their stuff? Does the conservative press explain how deregulation increases demand.

How does deregulation fix the housing crisis that is still growing, an issue caused by deregulation, and completely unaddressed by all the current GOP presidential candidates? That's where a lot of our middle class wealth went. That is why even a lot of families with income are not able or willing to spend -- they are desperately trying to hang on to their homes, or hoping that things won't continue to get worse so they can't.

Look, these OWS people are as American as any. They are part of a very proud tradition in democratic societies which is to speak out against a broken system. I still think they need to really define their message, and maybe clean up a bit, but they are doing a lot more for their country than just spreading corporate lies that will kill or harm at least some of you, and your families, if we just let them do whatever they want. THEY HAVE DONE IT BEFORE.

Or next time when the banking industry fails, the government lets them fail.

Lets get real, if you run a business into the ground with borderline illegal and most certainly immoral practices your business deserves to fail. If the government stopped holding the hands of the morons in charge maybe we could get some competitive and intelligent people working in banking.

Having govt regulation just gives you a false sense of security. The really smart people go make big buck in the private sector and the rest become regulators. The smart people will always out smart the regulators and the politicians wont let anybody feel the pain for enforcement. So its a joke. I'd think 2008+ would have made that abundantly clear. Everybody wants heaven; nobody wants to die.

Companies kill people? But GOVERNMENTS NEVER do, I guess. It would seem that the STATE has killed more people BY FAR than any corporation. What separates government from the rest of us? THE ABILITY TO USE FORCE, even deadly FORCE. The biggest rackateer of all is the State itself, rigging the system for its own benefit, collecting taxes to "protect" you, but if you resist in any way, it is THEY who you need protection from in the first place. What we now have, is since the productive sector couldn't beat Big Government, they JOINED IT, and now we have a stitched together corporo-fascist model. But let's make no mistake, the "contractor" in the equation is the State itself. It has taken the Force we have given it in the name of protection, and now uses it for its own ends. The Great Debate of the age is should the corporo-fascistic model skew to "labor" or to "business", but the big BLIND SPOT over this war is that they are both PRODUCTION SIDE of the equation, not CONSUMPTION. It is the debate over a left leaning corporo-fascism, or a right leaning corporo-fascism, when the REAL debate is to how to deconstruct it and replace it with a free market where individual choice rules and the consumer controls, not the State and who it chooses to benefit by Force.

                    Sarah -

It's not necessarily just financial regulations. There are several government agencies that regulate.

Research Flibe Energy. The founder of the company intends to supply green, cheap, easily accessible energy whose $/kwh would undercut coal (something current green energy ventures can't do without government subsidies). It might have the potentail to revolutionize energy production. The technology is available now and it nothing new. One of the huge roadblocks is the regulations from FERC and the NRC. Flibe energy plans to contract with the military because its regulatory process is much less stringent.

I'm still not clear on why this movement claims to represent me?  I'd be curious if a poll has been done with the general public in the US to identify exactly how many would consider themselves to be represented by this movement.  I'm 100% fine with their right to protest, march and do what ever else they believe they need to do to get their point out.  However, I'm not ok with them claiming to represent me!  I certainly not in the 1% but I do pay taxes.  So, I guess I'm part of the silent majority.  Perhaps someday some group will represent us?  But for present time, please do not be so arrogant to represent me (and I'm sure many others silent majority non-vocal  folks).

By a 66 percent to 31 percent margin, New York voters say that the Occupy Wall Street movement does not represent 99 percent of people, according to a Siena College poll released today. But the poll said that by a 57 percent to 40 percent margin, protesters should be allowed to occupy public parks 24 hours a day.

Voters had a 45 percent to 44 percent favorable view of the movement, today's poll found. That's down from 49 percent to 38 percent last month. They dont represent me

They don't represent me, either. I guess I am in the silent majority too. I fear there are no moderate voices left and people like us aren't even taken into consideration anymore. All that seems to matter these days are the super rich or the super poor. There are still levels in between! When I say I don't agree with the way these protests are going down, I'm labeled a tea-partier. When I say I think there needs to be better oversight at the banks, or that I don't like Golden Parachutes, I'm labeled a Occupier.

In reality, I'm a declared independent who is fiscally conservative, socially liberal and all for compromise if its going to edge us out of the rut we are in.

Who cares if they don't represent you. If you believe that change ins't needed then you are wrong and living under a rock. Simply no opinion required. The current direction even if your not part of this or a 1% er will ruin life for everyone in the future.

Currently we have a dysfunctional government and a big part of that blame goes to corporations and money entangling in government affairs which should never happen. On the same side you have those very same corporate dbags running for office and getting in with bias towards the very people they must regulate....hmmmmmm.

Anyways even if you do not agree with this and if nothing is done then the disparity will continue to grow and in 5 - 10 years time the whole get a job hippie argument will be a far cry away and you will see horrible things happen in this country. (looks at mexico) that is what happens when a middle class is faded out.

I work hard as many of you do. I work in the IT field for a school system covering 20 schools with 5 of us. We cover large networks. 4000 computers for the city and school side in addition we cover emergency systems as well. I pay my taxes and I have no issues in using some of those taxes to better the life of the not so fortunate which I am one due to my take home being less than a mcdonalds manager. (being underemployed feels as bad as being unemployed, especially when you have a good job) All you babies crying socialism is evil oh my god!! do not understand what kind of problem we find ourselves in. Those same said babies are resting on excuses such as: I am doing okay you should be too argument or just cause you don't care. Jobs will continue to get scarce due to population growth and technological advancement. Unless you want droves homeless people, crime going up and the absolute dumbing down of our country then keep fighting socialistic views because we need to open our eyes to the idea of helping each other, pretty simple and guess what people? Capitalism does not support the idea of helping out people, it's a kill or be killed system which did work but cannot support us now. We need to mix both Capitalism and Socialism with democracy! It doesn't mean all or nothing sheesh. Take some good things and use them! Free health care and school is a joke it's not free it will be paid by and used by TAX PAYERS! Community and state colleges prices drastically reduced for tax payers and so on. What the hell is so bad about that? Don't give me the it doesn't work in other countries because it does and guess what WE CAN DO IT BETTER.

                      Stop being so selfish, damn.

I am not part of the Occupy Wall Street protesters, but I can say one thing they have people talking. As far as if they do represent the 99% I do think they do. My question to you would be, if you can say yes to any of these questions then they do represent you. These questions are as follows: Did you disagree with the bailout of the Big Banks? Did you or anyone you know loose their job in the past few years? Did you or anyone you know loose their home recently? Do you feel you have been ripped off by the Credit Card Companys? Do you feel wronged by Big Banks charging you money to get your own money out of the bank by using your debit card? Has your property value gone down or has anyone you know had this happen? Were you opposed to Corporations being considered people, overturning a 125 year old law, so they could contribute to politicians? Does it anger you to know that some huge corporations pay absolutly no taxes yet they get a huge tax refund? Does it anger you to know you are paying for the Public sectors pensions and wages and they can constantly bargain for higher wages without your say even though through your tax dollars you pay for this? This list could go on and on. But if you have to agree with any of these questions then yes, you are part of the 99%.

The problem with being a Silent Majority is that no one hears you or knows your grievance.

If you don't understand the OWS movement, maybe you should try talking to someone who is connected to it from a messaging standpoint. And I don't mean the hanger's on, malcontents or volumes of opportunity seekers who have used the movement as a feeding ground upon which to prey. OWS is an umbrella organization that represents that segment of today's American society that has moved from the Silent Majority to become an organized faction that demands to be heard. Just because people have yet to hear a platform or message does not mean that the OWS protest is illegitimate. There are in fact many problems, most of them articulated daily on blogs like this, which fall beneath the banner of OWS. For example:

                        • Taxpayer bailouts of Investment Banks, and other financial institutions.
                        • Foreclosures and the lack of commitment by the financial institutions who made the loans to assist in solving the problem.
                        • Tightening of credit standards to the point that small businesses can no longer secure Lines of Credit, which were essential in their ability to do business (purchase inventories, capital expenditures, etc.)
                        • Outsourcing of manufacturing jobs.
                        • Widening income inequality.
                        • "Corporations are People" or better known as the Citizens United ruling.
                        • Corporate lobbying and their writing of legislation.

I don't see how anyone that is not a part of the Corporate/Political/Financial management structure would not consider themselves aligned with the spirit of OWS? Who else out there is speaking up for that portion of America that is affected?

There may be a Silent Majority in America but in order to effect change that majority needs to break it's silence and let their dissatisfaction be known publicly.

There is, after all, something to be said for the "Squeaking wheel getting the grease". Look at what the Tea Party evolved to, not that I agree with their message, methods, or especially their results. But they were dissatisfied and did something about it. Here we go again. Exactly as I said. Just because I do not agree with everything the OWS says, it does not mean I do not understand what they are saying. I can read. But, the OWS movement can air their grievances all day every day and its not going to change anything until they put together a list of solutions and start to mine candidates dedicated to implementing them. Make your plan, then work your plan and then see if people follow your plan - that is the American way.

And just because I don't agree with the OWS movement, that does not mean I am a 1%. The Occupiers do not represent me, or most people I know, and none of us are 1%-ers. Even if I answer yes to a lot of the questions above, the Occupiers still don't represent me. Sharing the same aggravation on certain issues does not mean we share the same philosophy. That all or nothing mentality is an extremist perspective and that is exactly what is ruining this country (on both sides of the coin!).

Banks are not supporting new businesses unless they are members of the wealthy or corporate elite supposedly for reliability and stability. How quickly they do forget who sponsored the Wall Street corruption and Recession. It takes two parties along with the elite to promote this trend.

Makes you wonder if those protesting in Egypt actually spoke for the majority of Egyptians, doesn't it? (Since the protesters here are definitely a minority fringe group)

Sarah1976: Do you not know that the military now runs Egypt and that they have threatened violence rather than allow a free election. All under the guise that the situation is to fragile to allow the people to make decisions. Of course the first act of the new Egyptian regime was to allow Iranian warships to use the Suez Canal, you know the Iranians, that now have nuclear weapons. Don't be a moroon and believe that simply because you use the word "people" (mostly college students and homeless) it leads to good things. The "people" wanted the Shah of Iran out of power and look what they got. Grow up!

Actually, it's deliberate political misinformation that the Egyptian protesters were comprised of mostly college students and homeless people. Professors, politicians, employed workers, unemployed workers, homeless people, and people with homes were all together in the protests.

Always take everything the media tells you with a grain of salt, Dexter. I don't know why you felt the need to call me a "moroon" and tell me to "grow up," but I don't think I'm the one whose views need a little maturing.

It was the people (and I mean all kinds of people) who wanted change in Egypt.

But the military made it happen.

Now the military doesn't want to give up what its got.

The people asked for change...and got screwed. Sounds familiar doesn't it? Not pointing any fingers here...Jusy sayin'

Asking for change isn't good enough. If you don't make it happen yourself, who ever does so on your behalf may not change things the way you would like. :)

I work, have worked for 20 years. Every year the raises and appreciation get less and less. My pay doesnt even keep up with COL now. Social Security is being demolished by the GOP, so I dont have that to look forward to like many generations before me. Unless I'm socking away half of my earnings, I'll never be able to retire. I can't save enough to keep up with owning a house, so I rent. Pretty soon, may have to house elderly parents. Where's the American dream in this? I work, save, invest, and it's not paying off. All the movement asks for is that Big Corporations stop socking away their many billions in profits for executives, and give back to the economy in jobs and compensation that fair for the work put in daily.

The Government does not listen to "Peaceful" Demonstrators. The plain fact is that when people get angry and Riot the government starts to listen. It's a proven fact all over the world. It's like a dangerous street corner without a Stop sign, they know it's a dangerous corner but as long as there are no accident's the authorities ignore it. But when accidents start to happen at that corner then and only then do they listen to the people.

GOP reform of SS is removing it entirely and putting it upon the individual to invest it wisely, which we know 99% of Americans won't do, and will end up without a sent when they need to retire.

                              @ WieserJG:

So you are telling us that the Paul Ryan plan does not ultimately privatize Social Security? So you're saying that the idea of giving people who are currently 55 or older an "Assistance Payment" that does not keep up with the rate of inflation, nor does it cover the basic costs is not the equivalent of dismantling Social Security? So you're telling us that instead of raising the current $107,000 cap, beyond which nothing is collected for Social Security, by 10-20% and means testing benefits we couldn't keep Social Security like it is for another 75 or so years?

If you truly believe that the only solution to our Social Security problem is to dismantle the program and tell individuals that they should "invest in their own retirement plan using Market Driven entities" then I am sorry but you are just following the GOP's plan for giving Wall Street more money to play with.

Lastly, find yourself someone who was 62 years old in 2008, had money put away in an IRA or 401K, and was planning to retire at 65. Ask them what they think about how the MARKET took care of their retirement plan. Somehow I don't think they will give you a favorable response.

It's interesting to see so many people who have such a solid facade, the horrors of this Depression haven't penetrated. Apparently, their family, friends and neighbors haven't been affected either? That doesn't seem possible. Therefore, we have to see their posts for what they are. Their is a segment that still blame their family, friends and neighbors for this situation. They do not go outside of MSM for news. They are not informed regarding the Derivatives bubble, fostered between Financial Banks and Wall Street, that brought about this Depression. They are not informed about the 4-6 Trillion spent on wars since the invasion of Iraq. They are not informed regarding the pillage and plunder of Iraq, 600,000+ Iraqi civilians dead and the CIA running a global war with a 90% civilian casualty rate. They are not informed about the thinly disguised fantical evangilists who perpetuate hate, in the name of god, called Citizens United. Purchased the Supreme Court 'Of the People and by the People' who ruled in their favor so that 'corporations now have the rights of Individuals' and their PAC donations can remain anonymous for expedited purchasing for your politicians. They are completely unaware that the Supreme Court's election of the President in 2000 was in violation of our Constitutional Rights and from that day forward, became the Supreme Court 'Of the Corporations and by the Corporations.' They are not unaware of the formation of 'ALEC' by Shrub, Sr. during the Reagan years and the perpetuation of corporations and their paid politicians to 'write and pass' the law of the land. The Jews didn't belive Hitler could do what he did. Finally Cygnus_X-1, SS has been gutted by Congress and you have not business blaming the 99%. The BULK of those funds have been used to fund the WORLD BANK, among other stupid investments. Your tax paying, SS paying neighbor isn't to blame for that any more then you are. If, indeed Congress had NOT pilfered SS to fund that and every refuge from their CIA wars, had let my invested dollars accumulate, I would have PLENTY to retire on with SS alone. Wouldn't even need Medicare. Congress can't do math, they needed to inform me that I was paying for myself, 5 refugee's, 10 'anchor babies,' and would need also need to contribute enough so I could retire at 50 due to NAFTA. If I'd known all of that, then maybe I'd have been informed enough and your 'blanket statement' wouldn't be made in ignorance. SHOW ME THE MONEY! IF NOT, THEN SHOW ME THE AUDIT TRAIL! Congress is not willing to provide either and their odds of being a millionaire have increased by 50% (2 to 1) in the last 20 years. Privitization of SS, Medicare or any other 'Social Service' is an invitation to steal from the middle class, yet again. Support OWS, just because you are in insurance doesn't mean you'll be out of a job if we don't privatize.

Sayitaintso: Let me know how well social security has done. Compare the gains on SS (newsflash: THERE ISN'T ANY) to the average market gains. Most people who talk about reform are in favor of giving you a CHOICE to invest or not. Me: I'm in favor of compound interest and having my money appreciate instead of staying stagnant.

American-American, I like your use of the word "Depression". We could very easily be in the same boat as the Great Depression if it wasnt for the social safety nets still in place from the New Deal, that prevents poor and down on their luck from having to stand in soup lines and live in Hoovervilles. On paper, this "recession" was every bit as bad as the Great Depression. More failed banks, greater total numbers out of work, giant drop-offs in spending and GDP. Seems the right only want to remove the few remaining safety nets, and see that all over again. They don't care, as long as it's not them and someone else. Just don't take any of their money to help feed and house someone else in dire need.

Warriors? If it comes to civil disobedience/unrest/war, I only pray that your "warriors" are as highly-trained & whip-smart as these protesters are...I certainly don't advocate violence, but it seems that many Occupy posters are starting to think that way. If it comes to that, it will be a very short "Civil War", and will be used by those in power in BOTH parties to complete their stranglehold on ALL of us. To paraphrase an earlier post, a civil war really will be purses against guns...I really believe that as things get worse, the protesters will start demanding firearms to protect themselves, as well as lessons on how to use them, and how to not really "hurt" anyone they point them at (except themselves)...if you advocate violence, you're going to get violence, so yes, be careful for what you wish for.

There is so much hate and negative energy in Americans these days and if it continues, things will just continue to worsen.

It's a given that should it collapse, every injured person will be visited by a lawyer chomping at the bit to file a suit on their behalf. It's a given that at least some of them will take up the offer. It's not even really a guess. Given the number of people I can see in the picture, it's almost a statistical certainty.

I support the protester's arguments (or most of them at least)

I think the protest is misdirected...turning college campuses and city parks/squares/business areas into mayhem isn't going to incur the change they seek.

Moreover, their message is very misunderstood by mainstream America because they are very unorganized and all they can do is spout the 1 vs 99% rubbish.

OWS - Go home, take a shower, get organized, boil it down into 3 or 4 simple sentences so the dummies in Washington can understand it, and take the protest to the National Mall...right outside the windows of the disfunctional dopes who can't seem to walk and chew gum at the same time.

Stop making a mess out of the public places...it will only piss off people who will potentially support you.

I agree with you Oilman. They need some direction and leadership. While I support their right to assemble and protest their voice is inconsistent at best. Different groups from different parts of the country are protesting with no unified message.

Take the message to your own state governments and to the National Level. Make a stand and stick to it. Never mind foolishness like forgiving Student loans. Stick to reality.

While I don't support much of what I hear of their views, I do believe we need change. We need to have a referendum question on next years election. TERM LIMITS for all National posts. Get rid of the Professional Politician and their perks. 2 terms MAX, for Senate & Congress. 8yrs max for Supreme court appointees. It's sad that there are several generations that don't understand the 60's protests, or havent bothered to learn the history. These protests arent about asking for any specific benefits...they're a shout out that Americans will be heard, no matter their stance, and government and police can't hold them down. It's worse nowadays because government is controlled by commercial interests, so it's Big Business who can say how and when you can "protest", as long as the message isnt against them.

I am personally hoping that the movements congeal in Washington at the Mall, like the 60's, and yells even louder for the world to see.

However, I can't stress enough that people need to vote with their feet and not their mouths. Protesting and screaming all day will not get a politician removed from office. An overwhelming amount of votes will. So, line the US Congress with democrats, and we'll finally see the financial reform and Wall St. reform that Obama promised and was trying to get before the GOP took over the House.

God are you all so stupid you can't see that Pelosi, Schumer, Clinton, all of the other Democrats, this silly pathetic uniformed mob calls heroes, also voted for the very bills that sent us into this financial mess. The voting record is there for all of you to see but your either too damn lazy to look at it or to stupid to believe it when you see it. The speaker Reich is knee deep in millions from his role in the mortgage collapse. Yet there you are drooling over his words like he's one of you. The republicans have only controlled the congress for the last year. Its not a democrat/republican thing the whole government is eat up with greed. Until you open your eyes and stop being sheep you are just spouting BS from a position of extreme ignorance.

Why is it that the Obama opposition always feels it necessary to REWRITE HISTORY in order to make a point? If you can't make your point using FACTS NOT IN DISPUTE, then logic should tell you that your point has no relevance.

Oh, I forgot that logic is the second casualty in any ideological talking point. The truth is always the first casualty.

The left is in the victim business. Without victims to save the left has no reason to bribe people with their own money. Obama delared class warfare on the the rich with the "millionaires, billionaires" rhetoric. Two months later Occupy was born. Where were all these "victims" before Obama told them they were victims? Obama can't take credit, but he will be loving this, until it costs him the election.

Class warfare goes back decades before obama. Its why the rich separated themselves from the other classes and no longer feel any illusion of solidarity anymore. When you run around ranting about "eat the rich", the rich run for the gated communities.

Out of contrast rise new desires. If you're happy with how things are going then just keep doing your thing and that is okay. In the mean time other people will bring forth new movements that will inspire others to reach different outcomes. Change must happen and Life is good!!

What did people expect? The cost of living keeps rising but pay and jobs for the average man keep going down. People are tired of those at the top shipping jobs over seas. I mean heck, when they were too big to fail we bailed them out. Now they are sitting pretty and thumbing their noses at the rest of the population. People don't want handouts. They want a job. The recovery that is needed is coming but unfortunately its a slow process. It might help a little if those at the top acted a little more like they cared.

America was born through revolution, she was born because people did not want to live by the old rules..that is the American spirit. The American people once again see that the way things have been handled by the few, the power that has been gathered by the few, is destroying the future for the many. Once again we must correct the way the country is going and do our part to keep this country a home of equality and freedom. The very spirit of America demands the people rise up when we are threatened and the threat to our way of life is huge and internal. All patriots must face the issues and chose a course, it's the American way.

Jones, that sounds very familiar. I think I heard something similar during the Vietnam War protests in the 60's. And I suspect that many of those protesters went on to become hard-working citizens, living the American dream. It is very easy to compartmentalize those we don't agree with. It is also easy to fear those we don't understand.

Wall Street got its way, and now cities like Detroit and Flint are filthy, drug and crime-infested encampments. They are the example of what this nation will look like if the 1% gets its way.

Um, haven't Detroit and Flint been that way for a while? I remember the exodus of people to the Texas oil fields when Reagan was in and the auto industry had to fend for them selves. I remember it being too dangerous to walk downtown in either of those cities, or trying to find a police officer as a lost teen driver coming over the bridge from Windsor... and there wasn't one to be found. Now maybe if you could point a finger at the unions just a little? I find it very interesting that part of the auto bailout required my dad to lose his medical pension. The union negotiated that for him during his 30+ years of working at the same company, he got lower pay, but the promise of that pension. So Obama and Congress force the companies to do 'something.' So now my dad doesn't have his medical pension, but is on Medicare. We have so much more that is messed up than just Wall Street.

Are you serious? You're going to blame the right wing for Detroit being a festering dump? You're a true tool. The right wing didn't have a damned thing to do with Detroit's problems. In fact, what you're stating is completely opposite of the truth. Detroit is a democratic run city and has been that way for a long time. You can thank the residents of Detroit for it remaining that way by continuing to lean left.

I'm also going to point out, that Detroit's working base is unionized, which is a democratic institution in itself. And also, those small towns you're discussing are also in union territory, which is *gasp* DEMOCRATIC !!

So I ask, do you have any clue what you're talking about? Or are you just attempting to agree with another individual that hasn't a clue so they don't feel like everyone is picking on them?

Too many words for these folks in here. All of you obviously have all the upward mobility and money anyone could ever ask for and don't see any reason to stop Wall St from hoarding it all and putting us all on the streets. Nothing to see here, everything is perfect the way it is.

Do those of us that still consume goods not understand that we are next. The corporations thru their bought and paid for politicians have set America on a course of Royalty and Poverty. These individuals in the news every day may be desperate, but they have no way to get the attention of these modern day robber barons that seek to enslave us. We do! We still wield the power of consumer clout.

Sit your children in front of the television and explain to them, "that could be us in less than a year"! Those individuals occupying these parks are the modern day Minute Men and the Boston Massacre is upon us.

D.C.  As soon as the 10% feel threatened or lose their inalienable right to electric power, they want reform, they want regulation, they want heads to roll.  The hypocrisy is deafening as witnessed by some of the blogs that put down the occupy Berkeley effort.  Believe me, as soon as these so-called conservatives and tea party ilk lose their job, lose their power, and have their families threatened with homelessness, they will be at the front of the line for their so-called liberal entitlements.
