Reno fire likely caused by power line arcing, some residents see what is left of their homes

Nevada's governor declared a state of emergency on Friday over a wildfire raging at the edge of a hilly Reno suburb that has damaged 32 structures, forced nearly 10,000 people from their homes, burned 2,000 acres and was blamed for an elderly man's death.

According to msnbc.com staff and news service reports:

The wind grounded firefighting helicopters and made it difficult for firefighters to approach Caughlin Ranch, the affluent subdivision bordering pine-forested hills where the fire likely began after 12:30 a.m. It also helped the fire spread from 400 acres to more than 3 square miles.

The gusts were comparable to the Santa Ana winds that often aggravate and spread wildfires in the hills surrounding Los Angeles, officials said.

"The wind is horrific," said Reno spokeswoman Michele Anderson. "We just watched a semi nearly blow over on the freeway."

The photo depicts a mother and daughter embracing and balanced atop a high wall, atop a narrow cinder block? Are these images two photos superimposed? Is this an honest news photo?

Oh, good, at least two people give the foil-hat guy a thumbs up. So what, exactly, would be the point of doctoring this photo? Can you give me something to work with here, or are you people just so whacked you see little green men hiding in every closet?

    left wing nut job-lol.

Seriously, these people just lost everything from a freak accident just before the holidays, its terrible.

Heartfelt sorrow for the people of Reno whose lives have been directly and indirectly turned upside down by this fire. There is never a good time for something like this and the fact the fire occurred just before the Thanksgiving holiday only adds to the sense of loss. Prayers for all.

Huh, someone points out a photo saying it looks super imposed, another person agrees that it looks super imposed, you people spew all kinds of hate and we're the nut jobs?!!!

Yes, you are the nut jobs - I just use it as a moniker, but you folks actually live up to the billing. I ask again, what would be the point of doctoring the photos? Would it make somebody more money? Would it magically bring the houses and their contents back? Would it create world peace? C'mon, let's hear it - WHAT WOULD BE THE POINT???

          Good grief.

wtf are you saying...these people lost everything and you are making accusations of fake photos...what would be the reason for this????? they are probably on top of the wall to survey the damage without having to walk through rubble that still may be hot and smoldering...the wall they are on connects to another wall, that seems to be level with the ground...so the "how" part to your comment is answered...as for the "why" like why would they be up there...they lost everything...wtf, they lost everything and you are wondering how and why they are on the wall to examine the damage...I am actually baffled as to why you would make this comment...

If this was your house, where would you be standing? Maybe on the deck that is shown...the same deck that could collapse from being damaged...or maybe you would climb in a tree...oh that's right, there are no trees after the fire...maybe one should be riding piggy back on the other's shoulders...and then they could trade places so each one gets a fair chance to look...

Gee, I guess you are technically correct, as it is "only" the mother's house. Then again, maybe YOU need to learn to read.

Please don't tell that idiot to kick puppies, he just might. If you are worried, John Harrigan, that maybe this didn't really happen let me assure you it did. I live in Reno, 2-4 miles from the fire. I was up @ 1am letting the dog out. You could smell it that early. I saw the flames on the ridge. Sirens were going off all day. The smoke was thick. You could smell it all over the Truckee Meadows. Don't you need to go pick lint off a sweater or something? My heart goes out to all the people that have lost their home, especially @ this time of year. Hey, left wing nut job, I'm with you.

You may have a point. Notice that the blocks behind their feet (close to main structure fire) are whiter, not soot covered & grayer as the other blocks are. Also, don't see how they got to where they're standing. Tip of right white shoe is missing. Looks like it would have been very dangerous getting to where they are. Posed shot or photo-shopped ?

the best comfort of peace to have in situations like this, get on your knees, and PRAY out to God. (1. Admit your a sinner, You fall short of his glory. (2. Put your trust in Jesus Christ (3. Believe in your heart that God raised Him (Jesus) from the dead the 3rd day, and confess with your mouth, the Lord Jesus is the Lord, and thou shalt be saved. I am sorry if I offend some atheists, but guess what? It is called "Freedom of Speech, as well as Freedom of Religion" I was an atheist back in the day, but why forget who created you, when clearly, It was God, Because He knew us before we was formed in our mother's womb. If you disagree, I suggest you to read the Bible, if you refuse that, then I am going to pray for you!! God Bless!!

I am Christian, and I find both sides of this argument a bit short-sighted. In the first place, Jeremy, coming to God is a great thing, but something that needs traditional guidance from people with wisdom, or else people could form misunderstandings that take them further away from the truth. Many detractors have used Biblical quotes. If you are posting to try to give comfort, then use those quotes, and listen yourself too.

In the second place everybody else, as a progressive Democrat, I feel like we are all living in our own hell, made of nut-jobs falsely claiming to be religious that want to cut more money from the poor instead of helping them. And people won't listen if you bash religion. Religion itself that says to help the poor; those who have hijacked religion are now saying to hell with everybody else.

History of Christian thought in a "nut" shell on this: 1. a sect which was dualist (good vs evil) influenced some people. 2. Augustine of Hippo invented an idea that God created both good and evil (not reading Plato or anybody else), and that influenced 3. Calvin, who said that the rich were an example of God loving people who were good, so that 4. those "reformers" that never had understood a real Christian tradition inherited this very twisted concept, and therefore will not follow the actual teachings of Jesus, who said 5. HELP THE POOR. You can see why I get mad at those people; they defame my God while pretending to worship. There were a lot of arguments in Christian history against selfishness; every city or region that was selfish lost.

You can both suck my balls. Reno-Tahoe is the shiite! Sure, the downtown casinos are a bit seedy, to say the least, but people who live here don't really go down there. The real draw of Reno is the amazing outdoors in every direction. Snowboarding/skiing? Check. Hiking/backpacking? Check. Swimming/boating? Check. Off-roading? Check. Hunting/fishing? Check. Should I go on?? There's a reason that 90% of the people that live here are transplants from elsewhere. And I can guarantee it's about 100 times better here than Alabama, or where ever you're from.

I've lived in Northern Nevada for more than half my life, and while some parts of it do indeed suck, the fact still remains that this community can pull together and help each other out in times of need. Say what you want about Reno, those of us who live here know it's not just about the area but about those who live around us. I'll take the questionable city filled with people who give a crap over a city that looks good but is filled with self centered a-holes any day of the week.

My mom`s house got heavily damaged by an arson fire, she got out, they caught the head-case, and the insurance more or less cleaned up the mess. But I know what I felt when I saw what was left of the place.

Wow... you people? Relax, settle down, get a grip... and be kind to one another.

My comment was motivated by this thought: What a horrible tragedy of personal loss in Reno!!!

So why on earth would this sad event need to be enhanced or dramatized by a photo that seems so obviously faked?!? I have been in and around the professional photo community for many years. And YES, professional photographers are NOT always honest. And this seems to be a case of just that!

It seemed sad to me that a reputable news agency I trust, MSNBC.COM, would make this a lead photo without a second thought?

At first sight, this photo catches the eye and heart with dramatic impact... however... how did these two get into this position, and how would they get out? Fire Marshals would have never let them into a still smoldering landscape etc, etc.

The two stand in a profoundly precarious perch. There appears no way into that position and no way out.

My sentiment was, how incredibly sad that a tragedy such as this, would inspire or need a photo that looks to be dishonestly contrived?! If the photo is authentic, the photographer merits a major prize, and I would be the first with congratulations.

My heart goes out to these people, their loss and their suffering... which is why I was taken aback at a picture that seemed to lack honest photographic depiction. For me, it added to the overall sadness and injustice of the event.

The stunning photo of the mother and daughter is very real. They were, in fact, standing on the retaining wall. I was wrong in fact, and insensitive to have made a rash and questioning post to such a tragic event. Max is a renowned and established photo journalist with some incredible pictures that can be seen at his site: MaxWhittaker (dot) com. I recommend a look!
