Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords serves Thanksgiving meal to troops in Arizona

Matt York / AP

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., and her husband, retired Capt. Mark Kelly, meet both active and retired airmen after serving a Thanksgiving meal to troops at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in Tucson, Ariz., on Nov. 24.

Matt York / AP

The AP reports:

U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords helped serve a Thanksgiving meal to service members and retirees at a military base in her hometown of Tucson, Ariz.

Giffords arrived in the dining hall at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base at midday Thursday wearing a ball cap and an apron with her nickname of "Gabby" sewn on the front. She was accompanied by her retired astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, who also donned an apron.

Giffords used only her left hand as she served, a sign that physical damage remains from the injuries she suffered when she was shot in January.

Kelly supported her from her left side as she worked the turkey station on the serving line. He served ham.

Afterward, she mingled with service members, exchanging pleasantries and mostly one word greetings and responses.

She did tell Airman 1st Class Millie Gray, of Kansas City, Mo., "Happy Thanksgiving, thank you for your service." Read the full story.

Dear Impatient Girl

Get lost.. even more than you obviously are at this time.

You have missed the issue. It is about the underground movement which is poised to take over the Nation by lies, subterfuge, deceit and criminality in the daily business of our nation.

This woman was caught in the middle of a conspiracy to murder a Federal Judge named John Roll.

And do you get tired of hearing about a girl, nine years old a beauty, who was brutally shot by a murderer/killer?

Do you get tired of hearing about how the liberties, and lives of the families of the people slaughtered by this 'useful idiot' are still grieving?

Do you get tired of hearing about the freedoms we have to enjoy even with a squatter in the Oval Office?

Well kiddo we are tired of hearing your asinine attitude. As I suggested... get lost.

I would like to ask all military branches to bestow on U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and honorary military rank for being in harms way serving the citizens of the United States of America.

bobbyh: Disagree. She did nothing to earn a medal. Thousands of others are wounded/in harm's way but they're not politicians or worth media coverage, so no matter the situation, they only get a nod. Glad to see anyone recover from an injury but don't think any survivor deserves special compensation. She doesn't need to worry about medical bills, loss of income, etc. as do those I know who are recovering. Hate me all you want; what's fair is fair.

#3.2 - Thu Nov 24, 2011 6:10 PM EST

No, bobbyh, you are asking something that is not for those that don't serve. I am appalled by your suggestion and question the reason behind this unorthodox request.

But again, NO. She does not deserve anything other than every other American with hardship receives, and that is not an honorary anything. What kind of nonsense is this? If we start this for everybody in a unique situation in life, where do we end up? Any honorary military rank is for those that deserve that as military members. She is not and does not!

While I may disagree with Rep. Giffords' views on certain issues, I am sincerely glad that she has recovered as well as she has already. It is a truly amazing recovery and I wish her nothing but the best and may she continue to recover even more fully.

As for an honorary military rank, I must respectfully disagree. When exactly did she "go into harms way"? There was no inherent threat in her attending a public speaking forum, which is where she was so terribly injured. How exactly does that constitute going into harms way? Not to mention the fact that her injuries had nothing to do with any type of military action or service. Why would you give someone an honorary military rank for something that has nothing to do with the military??

While I appreciate the sentiment, it fails the simplest of logic tests.

atleast she's out there doing somthing on this day instead of the thousand of other people who wouldnt even do soif they had the opportunity. She may not deserve a medal but you dont have to be so rude about it..There are normal people that risk their lives everyday or who have diseases,or whatever it may be who are not in the military who deserve to be recognized too..i dont understand peoples thinking on only military are good enough to be recognized!! im greatful for them but come on

I don't know if you realize it, but her office was trashed some time before she was shot. So somebody was after her. She didn't have to go out and meet with the public the way she did. She could have met with them in a safer place. And now she is kind of walking wounding still trying to help the soldiers and her country anyway she can, bravo to her. Sorry, but I think she is a hero, and deserving any award her country might bestow on her. Our soldiers know that they are in a fight, but can defend themselves. Rep. Giffords was all alone, and almost defenseless. When you put yourself out there, like she did, anywhere in these times, it's easy to imagine, and to believe that there is someone right around the corner who would just as soon as kill you, as go fishing.

Yes her story is very inspiring and we all celebrate her recovery, but I must agree that a military honor is a bit of a reach. But isn't it amazing what access to great health insurance can provide? The Congresswoman is certainly a shining example of that as well. Wouldn't it be wonderful if ALL Americans could be provided with such an opportunity, a CHANCE to have a more postive outcome when our health is in danger? Now THAT be something to celebrate! Just sayin...

I am disgusted that such a great story can turn into wretched partisan politics as usual, just like some psycho who tries to kill the president. What have we become? This is a good woman who was shot while working for the people- I'm not even going to mention my states half-term, corrupt, pathetic former governor here, but it's unbelievable what people have come to believe in this country.

Susie, besides playing golf, Mr Palmer has used his celebrity for a ton of charitable work, by no means limited to the Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida. I did not know this either until just now. Try Google-ing Arnold Palmer charity and learn more, and if you are able, get your own checkbook out!

And brava Gabby!!!!!!!!!!!

By this comment, I can make a pretty fair guess that you do not know a great deal about neurological injury and recovery. That part is fine, but to make a general, and rather judgemental, statement such as you did is irresponsible. She wants to continue to serve in Congress. What would be your wish for her, and what is your rationale?

I have voted since I became of age and at that time it was 21 - and now is 18 When I go to the polls in some states that I have lived in and now mail in my vote - I feel a sense of - yeah maybe my voice will be heard - sometimes yes, sometimes no - but it is my duty to try

No, her name is not Kelly. Women use their birth name after marriage, and have been doing so for years. Where in the he)) have you been living? Under a rock?

There is NO law that requires a woman to take her husband's name after marriage. It is custom, nothing more. I use my maiden name, not my husbands surname. I'm much older than Gabby (so this isn't a modern woman thing) and I just prefer the name my parents gave me. My husband is not a neanderthal, such as you, so he did not care. My father was a great man, my mother a wonderful woman, so I want to us their name. My sons use my maiden name as their middle name.

Geez, get with the program. We're no longer in the dark ages.

Why not your mother's maiden name, why your father's name? Sounds like roommates more than a committed family. Why don't your sons use the last name you use? When I meet a husband of a woman that uses her maiden name, I refer to him as Mr. (her maiden name).

My sister uses BOTH-- as a hyphenated last name. My niece used both for a long time but changed to using her husband's last name-- she figured that after being married to him for 15 years it was OK. There is no written OR unwritten rule-- it just depends on how you feel.

Navy vet-2815238 & Proamerica-1148973: As enough people have commented, you both really need to get used to the fact that the world does not revolve around your personal views and opinions. Men and women have the right to seek their own identity. What name they choose to be known by is part of that identity. That is why we allow people to change their names after their 18th birthday.

And did you know that taking of the husband's last name is primarily a Western cultural phenomenon? In most of the rest of the world, the woman retains her original name, even after marriage. Even countries that you probably consider backwards. And also hate to break it to you, but a woman's worth and dedication to her husband and family is *NOT* predicated on whether or not she chooses to take her husband's last name as her identity. If she does so, great. If she doesn't, great. It is her choice, period.

Of course, if you choose to live in a cave and choose to have your wife live in complete fear of you, unable to function without your presence, then by all means, you can try to force your wife to take your name. But I feel sorry for her, and for you if that is the case. Learn to live and let live, and learn to accept that some people might (sit for it) have a differing opinion than you, and ... sit for it again, that does not make them stupid or ignorant or bad.
