Gone in less than 60 seconds: 11 luxury sports cars wrecked in expensive pileup

The Associated Press reports from TOKYO:

An outing of luxury sportscar enthusiasts in Japan ended in an expensive freeway pileup — smashing a stunning eight Ferraris, a Lamborghini and two Mercedes likely worth more than $1 million together.

Damaged Ferrari sports cars along a stretch of the Chugoku highway following a 14-vehicle pile-up on Dec. 4, 2011.

Police say they believe the accident Sunday was touched off when the driver of one of the Ferraris tried to change lanes and hit the median barrier. He spun across the freeway, and the other cars collided while trying to avoid hitting his car.

Video of the crash aired by NTV, a major national network, showed several smashed, bright red Ferraris cluttering the freeway.

No one was seriously injured, but police in Yamaguchi prefecture said 10 people were treated for bruises and cuts. Police say 14 cars were involved altogether. Read the full story.

so if obeying the traffic laws wouldn't it be easier to keep a ferrari on the road? don't they handle like they are "on rails". I hope if they were speeding, and this wasn't an act of god that the insurance tells them to go screw a duck....... go to a track if you have that kind of money to play. No respect for those who endanger everyone elses lives.

IRESPOND - Dude, Grover Norquist is the antithesis of narcissism! If you want to use big words in reference to little people at least do some homework ahead of of time. Read the following from a psychologist; sounds a lot more like Obama than Norquist.

Hotchkiss' seven deadly sins of narcissism

  1. Shamelessness: Shame is the feeling that lurks beneath all unhealthy narcissism, and the inability to process shame in healthy ways.
  2. Magical thinking: Narcissists see themselves as perfect, using distortion and illusion known as magical thinking. They also use projection to dump shame onto others.
  3. Arrogance: A narcissist who is feeling deflated may reinflate by diminishing, debasing, or degrading somebody else.
  4. Envy: A narcissist may secure a sense of superiority in the face of another person's ability by using contempt to minimize the other person.
  5. Entitlement: Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves special. Failure to comply is considered an attack on their superiority, and the perpetrator is considered an "awkward" or "difficult" person. Defiance of their will is a narcissistic injury that can trigger narcissistic rage.
  6. Exploitation: Can take many forms but always involves the exploitation of others without regard for their feelings or interests. Often the other is in a subservient position where resistance would be difficult or even impossible. Sometimes the subservience is not so much real as assumed.
  7. Bad boundaries: Narcissists do not recognize that they have boundaries and that others are separate and are not extensions of themselves. Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all. Those who provide narcissistic supply to the narcissist are treated as if they are part of the narcissist and are expected to live up to those expectations. In the mind of a narcissist there is no boundary between self and other.

No, thats pretty much right-on about Norquist. The fella didn't exactly grow up on the "ragged fringe", skeptic. Look up his history. He grew up an entitled little rich brat in Weston, MA. Norquist is certainly shameless, arrogant, and has no concept of the struggles of others. He has never worked a hard day's labor his entire life. Had no reason to - daddy took good care of him.

His only big goal in life is to make sure the "rabble" are kept in line via economic oppression and that lowlife scum that make less than 250k a year cant ever move into his neighborhood and thus bring down the property values. Or anotherwords, he is out to look after all the rich in the country. Its the only life he's ever known, and all those other people need to pipe down, clean his toilets, pick up his trash, serve his coffees, wash his tighty whiteys and then go away out of sight and mind when theyre finished.

ChicagoSkeptic, in response to your definition of narcissism and saying the definition fits Obama over Norquist:

  1. Shamelessness: Making representatives pledge "no tax increases" but then making an exception for ending tax cuts for the working class is pretty shameless
  2. Magical thinking: The idea that you can spend less and somehow make more in return is magical thinking
  3. Arrogance: Even having this open agreement out there about never allowing tax increases on the wealthy when their rates are at an all time low is arrogant in the face of struggling families
  4. Envy: You get the point on this one. It's hard to be envious when you hold so much power and wealth and you measure your happiness through those things.
  5. Entitlement: "Narcissists hold unreasonable expectations of particularly favorable treatment and automatic compliance because they consider themselves special." This may be the best example yet of Norquist
  6. Exploitation: Exploiting the working class? Hello? Capitalism is, by definition, exploitation of labor. Raising their taxes while lowering those of the rich... definitely exploitation.
  7. Bad boundaries: "Others either exist to meet their needs or may as well not exist at all." Speaks for itself again.

Not really, we cruise regularly with, at times 100's of Corvettes, and this never has happened. Northern California has cruises a couple of times a year, consisting sometimes of 200+ Corvettes, cruising for 100's of miles on Interstate Highways, and yea, sometimes we go a little fast, but this has never happened.

There's nothing like a bunch of multi-colored Corvettes coming at you, what a sight, beautiful!

To assumae that the Japan free market society is identical to that of the USA is ridiculous and silly. Obviously there is a different spread of wealth and opportunity in a different country under a very different histrical and cultural backgroud. The "1%" of Japan and the 1% of America are not really comparable.

That being said, just because some people earned money and are able to buy fancy cards does not make them smart, let alone smart in all areas. Even the best and brightest can be bad drivers, have poor judgement, and make weak drivers. Stupid people also make money... by luck, inheritance, or persistent effort. The argument that 1% of the population thinks themsleves better thant the other 99% is fabircated and untrue. Please stop imposing jealousy on a group of people who have more than you. Only you claim them to be above reproach. I for one hope to one day be a part of that 1%, and see no reason why everyone shouldnt strive for the top instead of whining about what other people have and abuse. Get there and abuse your own wealth.

So owning a nice sports car automatically makes you a narcissist? Jay Leno owns tons of expensive cars and he does it because he's self absorbed?! No, he just likes cars. And I can tell you one thing, I bet the 99%-ers who live close to the plant where they built these Ferrari autos are darn glad there are people who want to buy them. Rich people spend a TON of money, and much of the money they spend goes right into the pockets of the 99%. Who makes, bottles, and delivers the wine they buy? Who installs and maintains the expensive pools? Who cleans the houses? Who sells the insurance on these expensive cars? Who installs the home theater systems and adds onto their houses?

When the economy started going down the tubes I saw an article about how stars in Hollywood were tightening their belts and not spending as much, and the thrust of the article was about how many LITTLE people were being hurt by the tight-fistedness of the Hollywood stars. There are a LOT of people whose livelihoods are DIRECTLY tied to the wealthy and their desire to spend money on things. It's so popular right now to villainize those who have money, but it REALLY does trickle down.

mozzie,

Don't whine. Getting ridicule and criticism comes with the job of being President. If someone doesn't put forth their best effort because of it, then they have no business running for the office. And your comment about Obama only makes you look like another typical ideologue.

Obama and Bush have both done good things in office. They have both done bad things in office. Maybe one of these days, people like you will actually learn to acknowledge both things. Though somehow I doubt it.

Neither side has a respectable track record in holding their leaders accountable.

As for these drivers being narcissistic, according to the article it was just an accident, with one driver accidentally hitting the median and the others getting damaged trying to avoid the first one. Pileups happen sometimes. It has nothing to do with narcissism.

Some of you appear to need to learn how to read.

First, the PRIUS caused the accident, not the expensive Ferraris. So what's the problem?

Is anyone allowed to earn a high paycheck and buy an expensive car. The accident was not their fault. Their insurance will cover the accident and they will buy another car, probably better than the one they lost. Most ferrari owners move up to better models.

I guess if you make more money, just keep your same car and never buy a house. They are allowed to do whatever they want with their money. If you don't think the rich are not taxed enough, blame the government that sets the tax laws, not the rich!

It's not the so called 1% percenters, the government, legislatures, senators, president! Blame them.

True. The Rich put money into the economy in these ways. They also spend a far smaller percentage of their money in these ways. Supply-Side economics has never worked in the robust way that the rich imagine. Reagan called it 'flow-down' economics, but even Bush I called it 'trickle-down' economics. The Rich are rich, in part, because they SAVE their money, and they invest their money in financial tools that take their money OUT of the regular economy.

So, give the rich more money, and watch it NOT enter into the regular economy at the same rate the same amount of money going to the poor and middle class will. Simple economics.

Sounds like maybe Mitsuyoski is just a tad bit jealous that these folks can afford something that he can't afford being a traffic cop! There was a time in America (and worldwide) when we looked at people who had things and said to ourselves, "Someday, I want that to be ME." Now we are being trained to look at them and say, "They don't deserve what they have. They should give it to ME!"

To everyone in the thread above who made statements along the lines of..."so this is what the 1% do with their time/money"...

Do you understand what you are referring to? I am assuming you mean the 1% who is vilified in this country for having wealth. Did you stop to read this article? It wasn't in the United States, and therefore the participants aren't covered under the rediculous umbrella term of "the 1%".

Do I think it is rediculous to pay that much money for a car? Absolutely. Do I also think it is rediculous for people to spend money on expensive cell phones and plans, sneakers and TV's? Absolutely. But it doesn't matter what I think about how they/you spend YOUR money. It is yours. It is theirs. It is none of our/your business.

And before you jump on my statements, stop for a moment to think about those items that you have in life that are actually not necessities, but instead luxuries...those phones, more than 1 pair of shoes, a flat screen tv, an iPod, a laptop, more than one car, a house/apartent with a few extra feet of space that is not required in order to house you...all of those are more than many people in this country and the world have. So you are living a luxurious existence to many. Should they begrudge you for having something they do not? Do you lose sleep over being more fortunate/successful/responsible than others? I doubt it.

And let's just finish by stating the simple fact that the article was about a car pile-up...it doesn't have to be turned into a rant against those who can afford them. Not everything has to be political in life.

I understand what you are trying to say but......... The real world is a different story

I think Tom-1775450 is more spot on. I worked customer service for Verizon years back and can verify, wholeheartedly, that it is the people with financial resources who have the bare-bones telephone service. Maybe caller ID, but that's it!! Some don't even have telephones anymore, just cell service. Surgeons, Attorneys, I personally knew a guy who was board member in several shipping and engineering businesses and didn't even have call waiting!! Another man (started one of the first mutual funds in existence) same deal and drove 2 early 80's Olds 88's

The working poor have the whole shebang!! Caller ID, Voice-mail, three-way calling, call waiting etc... and TV and Internet service all in a big 160mo bundle

        I'm just sayin'........

eric60watts: Exactly right. Look at the size of the average American house compared to the average house in Europe. US houses are around 2 times larger on average. Look at cars. US cars have more power and are larger on average than those in Europe. Europeans get by just fine on less, so those of us in the US should be able to as well. We're talking averages here, so we're not talking about the 1%. We're talking about the average person who owns a house or a car. Yet if someone told each of these complainers that they had to cut their house size in half or start driving a pint-sized car like you see all over Europe, they would be complaining about that. After all, it's their RIGHT to spend their money however they choose. It's their money. But anyone who has more money than them doesn't have the same right according to them.

The reason we saw so many foreclosures and repos was not anyone's fault but the owners'. No one forced these people to buy a house that was so large and expensive or a car that was so fancy and expensive. If they couldn't afford it, they shouldn't have bought it. It doesn't take much to make your decisions based on what you can afford. It doesn't take much to leave yourself "wiggle room" in case you lose your job or something else unexpected happens. Each of these people made their own choices. They can't blame anyone but themselves. I'm really tired of the blame games the current generation of people are playing. No one wants to accept responsibility for their own actions.

I would also like to add that the article and the "gathering of narcissists" is ridiculous. So now no one can buy something nice for themselves without being narcissistic. I guess we should all just work and give our earnings to someone else as the National Socialistics Society would have us do. Stupid headline for what turns out to be a pointless article.

Laughing at all the people making comments about 1%ers and such, who clearly didn't read the article. This was in JAPAN people!

It wasn't in the United States, and therefore the participants aren't covered under the rediculous umbrella term of "the 1%".

Sorry, @Commonsense66 and @eric60watts, the economic divide may be greater in the US than in other developed countries, but it still exists across the entire globe. It is not an exclusively American problem; it is called the "Global Financial Crisis" for a reason. You two are not helping us contradict the entire rest of the World's opinion of Americans as ignorant people who don't realize that things exist outside the US.

And the word is spelled "ridiculous." You look ridiculous yourself when you try to insult people with misspelled words.

They probably weren't going as fast as some people here assume. Damage to most of the cars is pretty limited, with the passenger areas still intact. If these were average sedans this wouldn't even be a story.

Amazing!! No wonder there has never been a Japanese race car driver of note. Most of them get into Formula One by buying their way in. The ones in the ChampCar (Indy) Series are second rate. Can't recall any one of them ever winning a race. Building cars, they're alright. Driving, a different story.

All that money and it all could have been avoid by simply applying the breaks.

                  Or even the brakes, perhaps.

There were at least three errors in your short comment, so don't feel like I'm picking on just this one, but honestly, do schools even teach homographs/homophones any longer? I see these errors every time I look at comments online.

                  • "They were driving to fast."
                  • "There going to have an accident if they drive this way."
                  • "If you can afford a Ferrari, your doing something right."
                  • "They should of driven more carefully."

And don't even get me started on "its/it's" -- that one is a national disgrace.

Sorry for the mini-rant, but in a written medium, spelling and grammar DO actually count!

It only counts when you're being graded, or perhaps when someone reading your comment is hung up on spelling and grammar because they sucked at math and/or science. (you know, the classes that taught things that actually matter in life)

Not picking on you personally just your post.

btw: I was at work when i typed this on my phone. I was in a hurry.

                    We digress from the story.

Yes, spelling and grammar do count, always. Too many people complain about the minority (spanish, arabian, asian) people and how much this country caters to them linguistically. If you don't take care of your language, treat it well and use it impeccably you will lose it or have your country occupied by people who have no regard for your language or feel the need to learn it. I read posts on all types of sites and the complete lack of skill regarding the English language is atrocious. It is not the teacher's fault but your own and your lack of respect for America and her language. Slang, colloquialisms, txt and abbreviation all come from the root of the language; if you can't use it well, you deserve to have to read your ballot in more than one language.

If you cannot take the time to express your thought correctly and clearly, whether on your phone, computer or cranial transmitter, the thought is not valued by you or those who read it.

We have curise-in's, and what's known as "Cars and Coffee," and believe me, the cars that come out to these events would make your jaw drop, from Ferrari's, to Lamborghini's, and every imaginable high-end vehicle you can think of, I remember two times when a fellow brought out his Bugatti Veyron.

Just a very casual event, where guys, and gals talk cars.

"Sports car." Where did that term come from? They don't look so expensive when they are all smashed-up do they? I see a lot of these high dollar two seaters; built for speed, in my part of the country. I am near some expensive resorts. What I have noticed, over the years, is that the dude behind the wheel is generally about 60 years old, ( he no doubt had to ask the salesman if it came in automatic). To his right is his idea of a "beauty," invariably a 20 something blond. These cooties can't seem to get the car out of second. They putter along and jam up the highway. Wasted money, and as the blond probably says; " pop-it into third.......baby...."

Why???? WHY?!?! Dear god WHY!?! Just because you can afford it, doesn't mean you can drive it! Maybe put some of that fortune to work on a decent performance driving school? Better yet, book some track time and drive like an a$$ hat there. God.. I can even see what must have been a perfectly good F355 there as well as an old Testa Rosa. Two of the most gorgeous cars ever made, and some idiots destroyed them. Fine work.

Before Obama was POTUS this discussion would have never taken place. Before Obama started "class warfare" 90% of the people that read this article would have looked at the pictures and comments would have been something like "glad it wasn't me" and maybe a comment about someday being able to afford one.

This "class warfare thing" brought in by Obama is really getting kind of thin. Nobody should live their lives like complete AH's but forget about it. If you don't like what you drive the get a better education or a better job then go by the wheels you want.

Actually, the rules of physics aren't so good when pushed.. as these guys discovered. I would have been knocking them just as hard if they had crashed an EVO or something. Well, maybe not.. A Ferrari is a piece of automotive art and beauty. Everything else is just a car. Potentially a great car, but still just a car. Don't make this about politics. Please. Troll that line somewhere else. This may be the ONE pure place left on here.

We should make common sense against the law then. By your standards it would make it desirable. Then these morons wouldn't have been driving fast, in the rain (according to Reuters), on race tires. Wealth and intelligence are not necessarily integral.

Rules are not made to be broken...records are made to be broken, rules are made to be followed. I have always hated that saying, that's why I have no remorse for people who get themselves killed when they break the rules.

Response to all the Marty-308743's out there, as he said "Fast cars are made to go fast and rules are made to be broken."

Yea, I bet that's the motto of just about every penitentiary resident. Yay for you, such a popular sentiment. Not sure how far it will take you on a slick country road at over 100mph? Would you like to have a beloved family member sitting next to them or traveling up the road the other way while these happy folk are exercising their "right to break the rules" and manage to start a huge multi-car accident? Yea...things change real fast when a loved one could be hurt. WAKE UP, lol, There is NO RIGHT to break the law, no matter how rich or powerful you are or how privelaged you THINK you are. There are however SAFE places to "exercise" your privelaged rights. In fact they were created specifically for these types of events they're called RACE TRACKS, there are straight ones & curvy ones to suit just about any flavor. So, yea, while the "PRIVELAGED" peeps on the planet should be able to exercise their right to party till they drop and wreck their cars to oblivion, do it out of our way please...And oh yea, maybe learn to clean up after yourselves too.

                                        JAkigns,

Lighten up ole boy. I´m sure that you are quite safe, sitting behind yore keyboard, espousing wisdom for us all and making the world a better place.

I must of hit a soft spot there, because your post furthered my point. You go on and on about how the "Privelaged", which I assume you mean privledged, are such a menace to the planet. It´s called class envy.

JA get out from under your keyboard. Fast cars are made to be driven fast and rules are made to be broken. I am not advocating putting other people´s lives in danger, I´m advocating that if you´d get out of the house a bit more, you might not be such a resentful person.

Old boy hahhaha, sorry Mr, MartySchmarty, Im an person who's driven her fair share of privelaged moments in VERY fast cars, so I'm not exactly ignorant of the feeling nor the experience. What I'm stating is the truth of it, DO the playing with vehicles in places that are created for it and stop endangering the lives of others. Neither do I find it a rite or a privilege to drive fast in public places where it will undoubtedly endanger the lives of others.

I'm talking about the danger of it, I don't give a rip if they blow their own houses up for the fun of it as long as they keep it out of the path of others. Seriously. If you have the money to play like that go ahead but do it SAFELY is my message. If you got anything else out of that, I dunno what to tell ya 'cept you're mistaken.

I've raced cars at tracks and know the difference, maybe YOU should give legal racing a try? It's actually MORE fun than doing it on the streets. ;)

I'm not resentful, IF someone can afford it and wants to blow up their toys at their convenience, have a blast...really, DO IT without putting others in danger AND if you manage to kill someone because of your .... privilege to party, you're happy to pay for that, yes?

How do you pay for killing someone? Can you put a price on life? Also, Marty, it seems silly to correct someone's spelling when you have misspelled several words yourself. And... as far as being concerned with eternity (Americans at War)... well... what a huge waste of a life. You are alive TODAY. Live TODAY. Eternity is a concept, not a lifestyle.

If you read the Asian media concerning the accident.

The group of vehicles were traveling to a super-car event in Hiroshima, 130 kilometres to the east. It was 5 women and 5 men driving their super cars.

The lead vehicle was traveling at 140-160 kilometres per hour, on wet roads posted for 80km, driven by a 60+year old man. He lost control and slid into the median guard-rail and the others following, then hit him and other things. see http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/featurenews/view/1169499/1/.html

Thank you for the relevant post ... Newsvine will now need to lock your account to prevent that sort of thing from happening again in the future.

Folks too often think that stepping into a high-performance vehicle makes them, by definition, a high-performance driver, captain, or pilot. You have to know your vehicle - and what it and you can do (together) under the conditions you're experiencing. There's no substitute for knowing what you're doing. I'm glad that nobody was seriously injured and I hope these people learned their lesson; they certainly paid enough for it.

Actually I think those cars deserve an A+ for safety. 14 car pile-up at 90+ MPH and NO serious injuries? That's pretty impressive.

I don't say anything about most people unless they do stupid sh-it like this.

They have the bucks and some have earned it, while others like these idiots more then likely got it from there rich parents or your bank account to making money out of nothing like some of those pri-cks on Wall Street did to the entire country.

I would suggest some Boones Farm with that whine. Loser. Tired of lazy whiners. Just because you have trouble living your life, you want to rule others.

Your a troll go back to your hole or what ever it is you live under.

The ultra rich are complete a$$ wipes when it comes to this kind of behavior, and I mean only those that never really had to work for there fortunes.

My grandfather was a hard worker all his life and came from the last depression. yet just up until he died he was worth 4 million just because he understood the worth of a dollar.

Some, and I say some of these rich folk never worked a real day in there life and just do sh-it like this.

I bet you would not be so kind towards these kind of foolish rich folk if they trashed your kids old beater in a pole or took thousands of dollars from your MF Global account or any account for that matter.

These idiots took these expensive cars and just trashed them with no regard for other people who may have been driving that same road way.

There idiots let me say it again............THERE RICH SNOT NOSE BLOODY IDIOTS!!!!!!

I think I made my point clear yes?

Now go troll away with your 1000 dollar second hand wagon will ya? LMAO!!!!!! I love life how about you?

These rich idiots obviously don't value anything by the looks of there cars.

That is because they never worked for it or just don't give a sh-it.

Wow hate much? Take a chill pill or drink some HATERade. Don't hate on them because they are rich and can afford the things that you wish you could. If you hate, just hate on their lack of judgement. (it would be the guy who decided to change lanes too abruptly and spun out)

Also, i think you should go look up THERE, THEIR, THEY'RE before EVER posting again.

                                              LOL

I agree. While I understand the motivation for a full-fledged narcissist to drive a car that gets them a lot of attention and, in their mind, convince others that they have a perfect life, some people appreciate high performance sports cars that can do things other cars can't,as the exquisite works of art that they are. These 11 cars being destroyed is to some people, the same as seeing 11 painting or sculpting masterpieces destroyed.

How 11 people could not have more appreciation for these vehicles and allow this to happen is beyond me.

I just wish I could have seen it happen from my 12 year old Honda. But I would have had to wait until I stopped laughing before getting out of my car.
