Ex-leader in court: Khmer Rouge not 'bad people'

Handout / Reuters

Former Khmer Rouge leader "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea sits in the court room at the Extraordinary Chambers in the Courts of Cambodia (ECCC) on the outskirts of Phnom Penh in this handout picture taken and provided by the ECCC on Monday, Dec. 5, 2011.

AP reports:

PHNOM PENH, Cambodia — The No. 2 leader of Cambodia's brutal Khmer Rouge regime told a court he and his comrades were not "bad people," denying responsibility Monday for the deaths of an estimated 1.7 million Cambodians during their 1970s rule.

Nuon Chea's defiant statements came as the U.N.-backed tribunal began questioning him for the first time since the long-awaited trial of three top regime leaders began late last month. Nuon Chea and two other Khmer Rouge leaders are accused of crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture stemming from the group's 1975-79 reign of terror. All have denied wrongdoing.

Not bad people, they just happened to like crimes against humanity, genocide, religious persecution, homicide and torture..

Now why does that sound vaguely familiar? I think I heard that on a few of the topics at the GOP's national security debate including some religious persecution (Islamaphobia)... We are lucky we aren't charged with genocide from the millions of people we displaced with "Shock & Awe"

The Kamer regime was a brutal as they come. Hitler and Stalin, would be proud. I don't think there is punishment enough, in this world, for these murderers. I hope the hell they go to, is as bad as ANYONE HAS EVER imagined!

Not Bad Prople? They are being accused of genocide - 1.5 million people killed because of insistence on absolute self-sufficiency - thousands from treatable diseases such as malaria and executions and torture against perceived subversive elements

I hate to say this but isn't this what Ron Paul is advocating - self-sufficiency - doesn't work - we need government to help and assist - we have come a long way since the 19th century and all people have the right to govern, yes and get help when needed

Ron Paul is also opposed to government-mandated vaccination programs.

If anything, this would be an argument against an overreaching police-state government. This sort of thing validates Ron Paul's interest in preserving civil liberties. Not quite sure why you're bringing Dr. Paul up in an article about the Khmer Rouge, anyway.

This ideological appeal falls on deaf ears.

An elite of ruthless men and women decimated an entire nation and then washed their hands.Sounds like Nazis to me.

Yeah that sounds about as bad as it does, I don't even need to comment on it.

I only wish it could be America's former No.2 leader Dick Cheney being charged and tried for crimes against humanity. Cheney has also denied responsibility and called himself a "good person". 4, 500 good Americans served and died in Iraq, hundreds of soldiers physically and mentally injured, hundreds of Iraquis killed, the Constitution subverted...this cannot compare with the atrocities of the Khmer rouge, but Brother No. 2 and Cheney are cut from the same cloth. They also share that arrogant smirk common to those who think they are above the law and can't be touched. If God is good, maybe there will be justice done someday.

Sorry Jack Knowlton that Cheney was in forefront of getting rid of Genocidal Saddam and The Despotic Taliban Regime. Maybe one day you can live with your Genocidal Saddam Henchmen friends again and participant in a Taliban suicide bombing. But if the world is lucky enough, the awesome US Troop, a freedom loving Iraqi or Afghani would be able to stop you from your future Al-Queda inspired suicide mission.

When Bush, Cheney and company are tried for Crimes against Humanity America will be able to hold their heads high again! Until then we all bear their shame.

only "crime" of the "Bush, Cheney and Company" was getting rid of Genocidal Saddam and removing the Despotic Taliban from power. I guess to you, getting rid of Genocide and Despotism is a "crime"
