Seventy years ago, a Japanese air and naval assault on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii claimed 2,390 American lives and propelled the U.S. into World War II. Nearly half of those who died were sailors aboard the USS Arizona, which was sunk by Japanese torpedoes, killing 1,177. Survivors of the attack describe the day.

Believed to be the first bomb dropped on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the sneak-attack on Dec. 7, 1941, this picture was found torn to pieces at Yokusuka Base by photographer's mate 2/C Martin J. Shemanski of Plymouth, Pa. One Japanese plane is shown pulling out of a dive near bomb eruption (center) and another the air at upper right.
Commemorations will be taking place today around the country to mark the 70th anniversary of the attack, including several memorials for servicemen who survived the attacks but whom, after their recent deaths, wanted their remains placed at Pearl Harbor. Also, a new exhibit about the attacks is opening at National World War II Museum in New Orleans.

Buy American.
I try to all the time. It is getting harder because AMERICANS tend to buy cheap not caring where the product was made. IMO, we did this to ourselves wanting to get the cheapest price.
Sure, we did it to ourselves, but if our government werent bleeding us dry through taxation maybe americans would have more disposable income to make those consumer choices with.
Put the picture of the women firefighters next to the famous photo of the flag being raised at Iwo Jima.
The resemblance is amazing.
Heroism on all fronts.
What gets me is that a couple of those women probably ended up in Internment Camps!
Whatever, Sam Adams. Stop preaching "Buy American" from a computer that was manufactured in China.
Badger--
Bleeding us dry from taxes? We dont have high tax brackets for anyone. I thought it was all about big business like walmart taking over and selling chitty products.
Adams
Sam Adams beer is brewed in Breweries that often have excess capacity.
They use the facilities of Foreign owned, (S Africa origin, London headquarters), SAB Miller.
If you really do want 100% AMERICAN products you'll find yourself a different Micro-brew.
theboys is right !! I called it cannabalism. Each one of the vaunted middle class made their paychecks or received gubmint benefit checks made here in America. Then they run straight to W**Mart and dump the money in China because they want to be smart shoppers and save money. So they save a hundred or two a month. But because of what they do an Amercian somewhere gets layed off. The layed off people file a claim aginst the gubmint which is paid by borrowing moeny from China. Now we all owe China and can't pay it because they have our jobs. On the top end of society we have taxpayers paying for the R&D at all the national laboratories and Universities. WHen they invent something, the CEO and the lawyers take the tech specs to China and hand 'em over so the things wil get made there. The Chinese then sell the manufactured goods to us one at a time. Everyone is OK with this cannabalism until they feel the water boiling as they take their turn dropping in the pot. Then they holler about what a problem it is and "Somebody" ought to do something. OK Somebody, try not spending your paycheck in China for starters. Tell me again how smart your shopping decision was when you bought that Chinese stuff .

Should we buy Mercedes made in Alabama or an American Brand made in a foreign country?
I just discovered that my Levi's are made in China! When did that happen? Frustrating.
Let's put it this way: Even the MLK statue in Washington DC was made in China. A Communist country, none-the-less, manufactured us Martin Luther King, Jr., a beacon for peace and civil rights. Were the Chinese workers even allowed to learn about MLK before they manufactured his statute? I bet they didn't even know he was black.
One of the few remaining, "Buy American" would be by US Law (US Code) "US Military Must Buy Only US Products, Goods, and Services".
As just like during the Great Depression, US "Consumerism" could never get the US out of the Great Depression. So after the failure of President FDR's "New Deal To The American People" (US Government spending money it did not have to create jobs), President FDR created the current US Military Defense Industrial Complex by Nationalizing US Industry and US Businesses, then selling the War Materials to England starting 1939, as to why the US emerged from the Great Depression 1939, and not 1941 US Entry into WWII. Nationalization of Industry then going to War, was how Hitler, Mussolini, Hirohito got their Nations out of the Global Great Depression years before the US. During that time the US War Department had instituted a "Fatting Up" Program for those entering the US Military, as to how bad the Great Depression was (people literally starving to death).
When they (Levi Strauss) first moved to Mexico, then shut down the Georgia Levi's Plant I wrote a very adverse letter to them that would make your eyes burn.
As far as Pearl Harbor, some of you might want to look at the 1995 Congressional Investigation, the 1999 Exoneration of Admiral Kimmel and General Short, the declassified US War Department Records, etc. and these books:
At Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harborby Gordon W. Prange, Donald M. Goldstein and Katherine V. Dillon (Dec 1, 1982)
And unlike most of the Pearl Harbor History Books, this one written based on the declassified US War Department Records, 1995 US Congressional Investigation, 1999 Exoneration of Admiral Kimmel and General Short (not a "Conspiracy Theory"):
Day Of Deceit: The Truth About FDR and Pearl Harbor by Robert B. Stinnett (May 8, 2001)
By the way whoever wrote the captions, needs to go visit the Pearl Harbor Museum at Pearl Harbor, Oahu, Hawai'i.
example: The armor piercing bomb that hit the USS Arizona's munitions magazine versus torpedoes, article "Nearly half of those who died were sailors aboard the USS Arizona, which was sunk by Japanese torpedoes, killing 1,177." Torpedoes they might have had a chance (armor, watertight compartments.).
Jim imagine my embarrassment. You weren't talking about that comment you were talking about my REPLY to Sam Adams.
Who said "Buy American"
Now either he got his moniker from the Mayor of Portland Oregon, or from one of our founders, or most likely from the beer of that name.
I'm guessing the beer had a lot to do with it.
Could be wrong, but a 'Buy American' comment really served no purpose to the topic which is why I figured beer.
OH MY JIM Imagine my embarrassment. You find it OK that Heroic Japanese/Americans were incarcerated!
Just makes me wanna' run out and buy a toyota or a honda. Ya know, just like Kasey Mears does.
It is just incredible how my quote doubting the authenticity of the photo was removed. The brainwash is on.
Well there is a good reason Americans had to stop buying American, their pay did not keep up with the cost of living Now who do you blame for that, and Now the GOP cronies want to repeal the minimum wage, that is their first order of business if they get a GOP President into the White House, so be very careful what you wish for because it could bite you right in the AZZ .....
Maybe you guys are using chinese computers, I'm not. Lenovo. Made in the USA. I buy as much American as I can. I have found a lot of Made in the USA stuff in Dollar Stores. Lot of Value Time products are made here and they are cheaper then the stuff I was buying. Just as good if not better, very happy with their products. One day I'm going to stop that Lexus with the proud to be American sticker on it and grab the guy and beat his head off the bumper he has the sticker on and maybe then he'll get it. Whats wrong with the Cadilacs? Nothing, beautiful cars. Just saying, lol I guess thats the thing to say after an outbust like this.
You know what stuck me funny. Some comments here can't see the significance with the "Buy American" post. Thats just beautiful. I guess thats the way it is right now, but thats ok, I get it.
Another thing too, Theres not many mills around now either, we're running a bare minimum as far as mills and factories go. EPA. You can have real clean air in most of the country but be poor, or else have a little smog and make money. People were happy with smog in some places of this country. I'm liking Ron Paul more and more all the time. Even though I think it was Newt that said he would try to get a new EPA in if he was in office, but don't quote me on that, I'm not positive it was Newt. Maybe it was both Ron Paul and Newt that said it. Either way I still like Ron Paul more than Newt.

Nearly half of those who died were sailors aboard the USS Arizona, which was sunk by Japanese torpedoes, killing 1,177.
It wasn't sunk by F**king torpedoes, that was the West Virginia.
The USS Arizona was sunk when a high level bomber hit the forward (and detonated) the forward powder magazines.
I have never seen that photograph of the women fighting the fire. It's amazingly iconic. I am surprised it isn't more famous.
Me too - first time I have ever seen that...
I totally agree. Fantastic image especially because it clearly represents the ethnic diversity and shows gender strength when called upon. I love it.
WOW and am with you Falstaffsmind and am as surprised as you!!!! Just look at that - all sizes, nationalities, ages. I would love to see these women found and interviewed - God Bless them. Nothing stopped them - they are getting it done. What a photograph!!!
Considering the date, I am amazed that the lead firefighter is a black woman!
The "War on the Home Front" was as important as the war in the field during WWII, but is severely overlooked by historians. This photograph should rank with the other great iconic photos of the war.
It is even vaguely reminiscent of the raising of the flag photo from Iwo Jima.
When desperate help is needed, it does not matter the color of the skin. We're all in this together.
I live on the Big Island. Not that it matters, but she looks Hawaiian. It's all good. Awesome photo.
And I wonder if the next two Asian women spent time in internment camps later during the war.
It IS an amazing picture.
Wow again - this photo offers up SO many questions!!!!
As a former firefighter.. that's a 2-1/2" hose... we use them to knock over fireplaces... can easily lift two people off their feet and whip them 20 feet. That's a great photo.
Absolutely. It's such a compelling image, I can look at it for hours. No photographer credit either. Who shot it? Who are the ladies in it? Fascinating.
... and you're surprised the leader is a black woman because?
If only we knew more about the women in that photo. What are there names? What did they do after the war? What are their memories of that day?
@kat: probably because race relations weren't all that great 70 years ago? That said, she looks more Hawaiian to me. Regardless, it's a fantastic shot!
Falstaffsmind, The woman in front is not black. She is polynesian; most likely of Samoan heritage.
I'm pretty sure that Japanese woman holding the hose was sent to a concentration camp shortly after. Therefore, in order to prevent embarrassing themselves, this photo was never used as propaganda.
The first woman on the hose is more than likely Polynesian and/or Portugese. As for interment camps,
"On the West Coast of the U.S., Japanese made up 2 percent of the population,
while in Hawaii every third person was of Japanese ancestry. Yet, in Hawaii,
only 1,500 of the 150,000 Japanese Americans were interned. Why? Because in
Hawaii the U.S. depended upon Japanese labor to pursue the war effort."
"Internment Camps." Whatever. The rest of the world calls them "Concentration Camps."
As for your "assumption" that the Asian women in the photo must have automatically gone to "concentration" camps you are more than likely wrong. Had this photo been taken in California it would have been an entirely different story. I would also like to make you aware that in spite of the inherrent evil of incarcerating our own citizens, guilty of no crime, unlike the concentration camps the US did not gas, starve to death and burn them.
I am just saying that I hope she served time in a concentration camp for what she has done. She was obviously a spy, and too bad Gitmo wasn't around so she could have been waterboarded.
I hope MSNBC reads all our comments and does some digging into the ladies' backgrounds. That photo moved me to tears. I would love to hear about them.
Studied Pearl Harbor Dec7 for over 30-years...I am calling photoshop.
Gotta say, this picture was really great!
FOLLOWUP STORY PLEASE!!!!!!
Imoen Some of these women are AMERICANS of Japanese descent. They are no more guilty or responsible than Americans of German or Italian origin were responsible for Hitler or Mussolini. Locking up AMERICANS in concentration/intrenment camps was a shameful page of our history. We have since apologized and gave them a token cash settlement. Read some history before you spout off about spies. The 442nd US Army division, made up entirely of AMERICANS of Japanese descent, was one of the most highly decorated units in the war.
As a female (U.S. Army) veteran (age 64+), it NEVER ceases to amaze me when we are minimized for our service, whether it's intentional or not... Although, there are 5 branches of the military....most don't know any or all. So, I shouldn't be surprised that we are still referred as "girls", and/or nurses. Jeanne
Roberta 1693334,
You are the first person that I have seen that knows that most of the Japanese/Americans, even Japanese immigrants were not interned in Hawaii. Not only to support the war effort, but also if they had interned everyone of Japanese decent it would have completely destroyed the econcomy of Hawaii as most farmers and blue collar workers as well as banker of the time were of Japanese decent.
I think that photo with the names is at the Pearl Harbor Museum, you can probably contact the Museum, they have things that many like Mark-1219747, have never seen before :
http://pacifichistoricparks.org/pearl-harbor-hawaii.php?page=visitorcenter
Or the Pearl Harbor Aviation Museum:
http://www.pacificaviationmuseum.org/
Roberta-1693334,
Unfortunately, they are more than likely correct about being put into Internment Camps. The numbers do not reflect those that were very quietly in the middle of the night apprehended at Hawai'i then sent to the Camps at California. As this even happened to those that were in the Hawai'i National Guard, ROTC, etc.. The recent documentation about the Camps (Tents) at Hawai'i, Island of Oahu.
You can say that these were not concentration camps, how about researching the "sickness" at the Camps with the internees not receiving medical care nor the small pox vaccines. Or the fact that the members of the 442nd and 100th Battalion (Most Decorated US Military Units in History, Medal of Honor, like Senator Inouye) were sending food, soap, etc. to their families in the Camps. The photographs of the camps indicate a 10 x 10 single wall wood building with a heating stove for a family of four as built per specifications. What was never disclosed were the numbers that died in the camps from the sickness.
The conditions at the camps is briefly mentioned here (sending food to their families, and the "sickness", the overall attitude of Americans against "J*ps").

If you do the real research you will find out about William Randolf Hearst, and how he made money selling the land, property, businesses of the Americans of Japanese Ancestry after everything was confiscated from them before being thrown in the camps. This was half of California, that was after generations of Japanese, turned from desert to agricultural land thru then not known Japanese intensive farming. For the average Japanese at Japan it was almost impossible to own land at Japan, so when they legally immigrated to the US, many being previous farmers (concept of honoring, respecting, cherishing land), that is one of the first things that they wanted and saved their entire lives to get, land for farming. California has archives of tin types (early photographs) and many other photos showing this (previous desert of southern California, the Americans of Japanese Ancestory Businesses, Americans of Japanese Ancestory at the Rail Stations (tagged) to be sent to the camps, etc.).
The only reason I know about this, is just like most things I comment on, I did a Research Paper while attending Gymnasium. I was going to make a comparison between the US Camps and the WWII German Camps, but believed my professor would blow a head gasket, back then a lot of German WWII History was just not taught at Gymnasium (Germany).
Later one of the many Research Papers (Required) for College US Military History, I wrote one on Pearl Harbor, based on the declassified US War Department Records.

Does not matter, black or polynesian, most people back then lived their "If you ain't white, you ain't right" as enforced Nationwide by the Jim Crow Laws. Even after returning from Vietnam wearing my Uniform at California, I got on another flight (Pan Am) to go home, I had reservations for a seat above the right wing a window seat, I was told to go sit in the back of the plane. Same kind of thing happened at NY when I was returning from Germany, etc.. At least at many of the "Hick", "Red Neck" States they would stare, but at least they recognized and respected the Uniform.
Roberta-1693334,
I really do not know where you are getting your misinformation from. You sound like a Haole.
You want to see what a Portugese person looks like. LOL. you know at Hawai'i why everyone jokes about race, because it does not matter what you say or what you look like, it is what you do that counts.:

Sorry to disappoint you people but this photo is a staged fake [unconfirmed], just as that flag photo from Iwo Jima [Confirmed fake]. Sorry to pull the rug, but Pearl Harbour was sold to a reluctant American President and people by a crafty Winston Churchill.
Also the majority of iconic Pearl Harbour Photos were achieved by a number of well placed camera crew in anticipation of the attack. These photos were later fed into the propaganda machine to rile up and sustain anger, hate , and create unity among an economically stressed and depressed people.
[PS: The United States was Nazi before the war. NASA has Nazi roots as do Bio and Chemical Warfare ResearchLabs. The anti Nazi brain washing was achieved by Zionist Propaganda machine to get American support for creating Israel. You people need not believe all this. I was shooed out of class, not by the Professor but by class-mates when I presented a paper with this thesis Pearl Harbour scenario.]
Now you may continue with your approbation 'Ooahhas' and stay in a childish make belief world of unreality or do some research for the Truth - it will set you free..

great photographs, except Japanese is misspelled in the first paragraph...
Amazing stories and pictures! What a terrible day in our Nation's history, but such a testament to America's ability to work together!
Amazing pictures. I think that this is the first time that I've seen a photo of native Hawaiians (women fire fighters) helping to put out the blazes. You'd think , due to the lack of photos or documentation, that whites were the only ones fighting or were affected by the Japanese attack. May all of those who died in the attack rest in peace.
Extended family of Polynesian and Portugese ancestry were living in Kaneohe when Pearl Harbor was attacked. All the citizens of Hawaii were very involved in the support of our military there.
I Wish we were all THAT united again. Wouldnt that be nice?
Then we'd have to listen to Toby Keith again... ew.
You just said a mouthful of commonsense.
Don't worry we will be........buy the way love the Zappa pic and if thats not Frank then man it sure looks like him.
People in the US are united in their obesity and their urge to endlessly consume!
It is often said that "Time heals all wounds" and that may be true, however, that doesn't mean I must forget the wound.
I sure hope all the Iraqi and Afghan children that lost their parents and their childhood to endless US bombing don't feel the same as you.
Admirable empathy. That terror and loss is embedded, hate festering in the hearts and minds of those children, every day of their life is remembrance of that horror moment.
That war will be couple of decades in the making...they have much growing up to do in the meantime
This, and the events of 9/11, are what it takes to unite us. So I guess it would not be nice to be THAT united again.
The sad part is that we need this type of catastrophes to unite. Why can't we unite without having to suffer the losses we did? "We must all hang together, or assuredly we will hang separately." (Benjamin Franklin)
But what is sad about it is-- 9/11 is already being forgotten by our youth and Pearl Harbor isn't even known by a lot of the youth today.
The country was brought together by patriotism with everyone working together after Pearl Harbor. 9/11 we were also brought together but then greed took over and the have and have not machine kept rolling. Whether it was corporate greed or scam artists. During the 40's the 1%---99% divide didn't exist because we were all equal patriots united for our country. We were self sufficient, manufacturing what was needed to fight the war in this country.
There was no global economy and the Internet wasn't even a thought. Much of the rest of the world hates or resents the U.S. and could care less about either of these events. In the same respect a lot of military parts and raw materials are coming in from other countries. Corporations sold their pride in America for higher margins.
It is tough to say the words, Proud to be an American, because I can't figure out what America is anymore. We changed from being a melting pot to being a catch all. We no longer have an identity which is seen more during this time of year when people are afraid to say Merry Christmas for fear of insulting someone. It is a holiday that is celebrated in America and has been for centuries but now you have to put a lid on it. Why? For religious reasons. Can someone please point out anything that makes anyone believe it is a religious holiday anymore? Santa beat out Jesus a long time ago.
All I know is this, it would make my day if any one of my Scouts can tell me anything about Pearl Harbor at tonight's meeting. They are 10 years old. At least that will tell me someone mentioned something at school today. I would also like to meet a teenager that can tell me what it all meant.
This isn't a game of, Call of Duty. It is real, it happened, it should never be forgotten.
9/11 absolutely did NOT unit the us?!?!? how could you even say that? SINCE 9/11 the country has gotten much much worse in ALL aspects of life, especially our freedom. Don't kid yourself by saying something like that. Truth is, terrorist won then and still are today. Look at the National Defense Authorization Act for proof of that.
I couldnt agree more with BeAccountable....sad, but true. Just because we mourned together does not mean that we were united.
Actually Browns Backer there was an sort of an Internet back then, it was called an Teletype machine (now days called E-mail for us on computers). It was an large machine about the size of an Xerox machine. Its first commercial use was about 1910. Look up teletype and teleprinter on Wikipedia.
It is a mystery as to why the photo of the Pearl Harbor firefighting women has not been more widely distributed. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears to represent black, Japanese, Hawiian & white women in Navy denims working together manning two fire hoses- Americans all!
They were the predecessors to the USN WAVES, "Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service".
Do you know what the mentality against "Non Caucasians" was at that time. Like when the 442nd and 100th Battalion was Stateside being trained, they were usually told to go to the "N" Word Entrance and not even allowed in the "Whites Only" places. Back then that would be a reason not to publish that photo.
You want to see a Congress person blow a head gasket, start talking about "Amazons" (US Military Women as Combatants a long time ago) or now a days "Lionesses" (US Military Women as Combatants). Even to this day, when I mention US Military Women on my Teams, many with preconceived ideas refuse to believe this (At Islamic Nations only women associate with women, even Life Saving Medical Treatments).
History-1022051
why u guys talking about black (firefighters), can u stop your hypocrisy too much pampering with blacks.. its not black women in the picture but a hawaiian with asian decent probably japanese ands filipinos. thats problem you guys americans (black & white ) created alot of sensational heroism, but when it comes to asians you become more prejudiced and bias..
That's an amazing pic of the women. Looks like something that should have become more iconic.
it looks good but i think its fake . considering that we never saw it before :)
but i believe ofcourse that woemn were and are and always will be capable of more stuff than that
but i believe its fake. sry
It does look a little contrived, but then so does the Iwo Jima photo (and I think they tried to set that particular photo up a few times).
@ThaPyngwyn No, that's an old rumor. The flag was raised twice but not because of cameras. Someone decided to put a lager flag up, and that's when AP photographer Rosenthal made that iconic image. He also did a 'staged' portrait shot after as a safety (these were the days before motor drives, shot on 4x5 sheet film). He sent his unprocessed film back and had no idea what the shots looked like or if/where/when they ran. Someone eventually asked him 'did you pose that?' and he said 'Of course', thinking they were asking about the portrait shot! Anyway, I do kind of wonder if this particular image might be staged, but I doubt it. It's pretty intense.
Thanks. In any case, this Firewomen shot had the potential to be very iconic throughout the war. I can't understand why it didn't circulate more once it was taken. Maybe it was only recently developed?
The racial prejudice of those days and I am not talking about just "Down South". The Jim Crow Laws all over the US.
How long did it take for the Tuskegee Airmen History to become known.
david-475776 You keep yammering on about the "Jim Crow Laws all over the US". Horse feathers. Jim Crow laws grew out of the Reconstruction in the South after the Civil War. You can just make it up as you go along, but historical illiteracy is still historical illiteracy.
And while we're on the subject of legalized racial discrimination: it should be noted that stripping many Western Japanese Americans of their civil rights by forcing them to sell their property and move to relocation camps was a policy created and enforced by a Democrat administration: FDR was President. Similarly, the Jim Crow laws of the South were the product of the Democrats as were the various "tests" (literacy, property ownership, etc.) employed to make it difficult for Southern blacks to vote.
The Republican party was founded on a platform of freeing the slaves; Abraham Lincoln was their first Republican presidential candidate. Lincoln, as President, desegregated the White House. It was a Democrat, President Woodrow Wilson, who RE-segregated the White House. In the 1960's, a higher percentage of Republicans in Congress voted for the Civil Rights Act than the percentage of Democrats who voted for it. It would not have passed without Republican support.
So while you are re-writing history with your fictitious nationwide Jim Crow laws, you might want to keep in mind it has overwhelmingly been Democrats who have actually been responsible for the most egregious and widespread manifestations of discrimination. Truth hurts.
Don't worry we will be.......buy the way love the Zappa pic all that is
Instead of invoking Teddy, Obama should follow FDR's lead and get us out of a recession by getting us into a war.
Despite all the welfare FDR tried, the only thing that worked was his winking at the Japanese as they planned for and finally invaded us allowing us to declare war and get the economy going again.
Talk about the broken window fallacy writ large, ugh.
Neither fascist, New Deal type policies or war is good for an economy. Any economy.
And certainly they did not get us out of the depression. The factors that did contribute to an eventual return to steady growth are both numerous and complex. And well beyond the scope of this response.
If you're truly interested there are several good economics books on the subject. As well as a hefty
amount of university research papers.
Yes, it is complex, but there is no question that the New Deal policies of FDR most certainly made a huge impact on the unemployment problem created by the Great Depression. When the New Deal policies were enacted unemployment was hovering around 28%. By the start of the war a couple of years later unemployment had dropped to around 14%, or almost cut in half from it's highest level. Then the war started and that created enormous spending and productivity for the economy and was the main engine that pulled us out of the depression. What really put us over the top was after the war we were the preeminent super power in the world and was the provider of many goods and services to other countries who had been decimated by the war. It should be noted that income tax rates during the war and throughout the 1950s were very high on all income levels yet it did not have a negative impact on job growth or the strength of the economy. There are some amazing numbers and figures you can find on the IRS website which provides all the data.
Like it or not, manufacturing for the war effort dragged the entire economy out of the depression.
Obama could and should do the same thing now.
nothing new here-1200374 - Instead of invoking Teddy, Obama should follow FDR's lead and get us out of a recession by getting us into a war.
While that is true, and the current US Military Defense Industrial Complex as created by President FDR is keeping the US out of a Depression after the US Laws that made Illegal the Causes of previous Depression were removed 1999 and 2000.
Quite a lot of us are tired of being the 1/2 of 1% Currently Serving in the US Military, while 92% of US Citizens NEVER Served.
A lot of US Citizens are also of the perception that we must repeat the mistakes of prior to Pearl Harbor. Become Isolationist. Close US Military Installations. Cut the US Defense Budget. Decrease the size of the US Military. Etc..
With their mistaken beliefs, like about their Faceless US Military Defense Industrial Complex that employs almost a hundred million US Citizens. A US Defense Budget Cut of 50% could be achieved by throwing all these US Citizens on Unemployment and replacing them with below minimum wage US Military Personnel. I still would like those that hate the US Military so much, to start demanding all US Military Installations in their State Close, so that they are not hypocrites. President Obama's Appointee as Secretary of Defense Leon Penetta stated that the Automatic Budget Cut of 10% would result in a Million US Citizens to become Unemployed, and it is not just because it his job as Secretary of Defense, it is also the fact that he would like to keep his job if President Obama is reelected. Personally I would like to see the Automatic Budget Cuts of 10% of the US Military Defense Budget just so that most of the US Citizens will finally learn their lesson the hard way. I would also like to see President Bush's 2005 US Law, Base Realignment and Closures accomplished with no exceptions and more BRAC at Anti US Military State of California. I would also like to see all those screaming "War Monger", "Killers", etc. have to live like Afghans as the US runs out of Resources (Oil, High Tech Minerals, etc.). And those that scream "Greedy Corporations","Military Defense Industrial Complex" stop having everything paid for them by their parents after their parents are laid off, and they then have to work their butts off just to survive by taking those "Low Paid", "McJobs", "No Benefits", "Entry Level" Jobs.
are you people insane...another BIG war....yeah i really don't think WW3 would work the same as WW2.... something most countries have now we did not have than....nukes....and so many other factors that we don't really need as many bodies on the ground as we needed back then. now a days war is wage from inside a building, and if we got to the point that we needed to draft people and send invasions like Normandy, well that pretty much means game over.
Rstarfox,
They want a War, let them do that.
In less than 8 months, most of my men, women, myself will be "Too Old" to ever be involuntarily Recalled to Active Duty again (and again and again).
Beyond a reasonable doubt those that hate War the most are those that must participate or have participated before.
Since 92% of US Citizens NEVER Served in the US Military, they do not understand that the Future Wars as taught at Command and General Staff College and War College when I attended would be Asymmetric Warfare NOT Conventional Warfare after the defeat of the USSR. It has taken this long to sink into the mindset of the majority of the US Military (Conventional Warfare). Now if we can convince the US Politicians to stop forcing the US Military to continue buying Conventional Warfare US Military Equipment so that they can save US Civilian Jobs in their States.

Wow- that picture of the women fighting the fires is phenomenal! Right up there with the flag raising on Iwo Jima. I suppose this was never circulated at the time due to the fact that the woman in the front was black, and the others had asian features. Glad it is finally being shown.
The japanese were barbaric 70 years ago and they still are today.Witness the slaughter of thousands of dolphins every year in Taji japan and the yearly whale hunt in the Antarctic.Things would be much worse for the whales if not for the intervention of the Sea Shepherd Society which is the only organization to oppose the japanese killing. Once barbaric always barbaric.
I cannot believe that I just read that crap. Really? Once barbaric always barbaric. Have you ever been to Japan? They are easily some of the nicest people on the planet. You take some one sided videos of killing animals and that is your basis of reason.
It would be no different then people from India sending large interferences of people to all of our cattle ranchers and disrupting their daily routines. Do you think the slaughter of innocent cows over here in the U.S. is not seen as the same attrocities in India that you see of the dolphins in Japan.
By your reasoning then the U.S. is just as barbaric to people of India and we are always going to be barbaric. Jesus the ignorance of some people.
On another note the Japanese have special permits from the International Whaling Commission to hunt the whales for that short amount of time. If you want to put the blame on someone then blame the Whaling Commission. Not to mention that the Japanese have been hunting whales long before the established United States came around and almost destroyed the humpback and sperm whale populations in the 1800's.
think about it
you're words are falling on deaf ears with people like him... just like PETA, they only care about animal rights more then Human life.....till one gets eaten by a lion then that's just funny.
everyones barbaric!
Goat Rancher Bob - Just to clarify, I believe the lead firefighter is a native Hawaiian. Many Hawaiian's are darker colored than others.
My Poem
"Downed by Hatred" ( to the U. S. S. Arizona)
The visage lay beneath me on the harbor floor
with sienna fingers reaching up so the warm,
moist water could lap at them.
How out of touch you must be with what has gone on
since you sank in troubled waters.
Motivated by today with clicking cameras,
squinting eyes, huge busses, and pushing fusses,
We remember with shallowness, a murderous day gone by.
"falstaff" ...
"vagualy similar" is putting it mildly ... IWO JIMA SCREAMS at me from this photo, and little else!
I wondered why we've never seen this photo before today? I was dumbstruck by this powerful image. Who took the photo? Where is it now? What were the circumstances that led the photographer to grab his/her camera to snap THIS photo, etc?
At the risk of revealing myself as an insensitive blob, I confess I've NEVER been so struck by a simple B&W photo as I am by this one ... not even CLOSE!
If another country pulls off a Pearl Harbor style attack on us today and gets America into World War 3, that could get us out of the current depression like World War 2 did for getting America out of the Great Depression. With the economy being in the dumps today, we need another big war to get our economy rolling again.
Yeah we really need a disastrous war killing maybe millions of Americans to pull us out of our current economic slump, destroying our infrastructure. Maybe then we could raise taxes to the levels they were during WW2. Hey we might even loose the war and not have to worry about our economy anymore we could all be slaves. Really???

with the young people in our country today with their libeal atitudes we could never win a war like WW2. we are barely getting by in the ones we are involved in now
billc, that's not an accurate comment. Our troops aren't over there to destroy. They're over there to hunt a small proportion of people that are in Afghanistan. They're also over there to befriend Afghans and build schools and infrastructure. They also have strict rules of engagement. You should apologize to the members of the armed forces serving there. Especially on a day like this.
Roodles, he should not say sorry for anything....even tho i dont agree with him....but those men and women whop died, they die for people like him to say whatever they want.
Billc our troops and young people in the military, get things done 100%, and all the screw ups come from the people giving the orders, not the men, and women carrying out the orders. Also about young people, i'm sure you're parents said the same thing about you're generation, just there their parents said to them....its an endless circle, kids always rebel... kids born from parents of the 60's and teens in the 80's became conservatives... so now their kids are going to be liberals, and then the future kids will go back to being conservatives....it is an endless cycle.... "Now get off my lawn you darn kids with you're crazy music so i can hear some classic Rap"
Love the photo of the women fighting the fire. I really does remind me of the flag raising on Suribachi. Please do not accuse all Japanese for the atrocities that occured. Yes there were internment camps and under the circumstances and period perhaps justified. I just can't get over what a great photo though. Thank you for showing it.

what an iconic photo considering the event and the time. would love to know more about the women and what happened to them in the aftermath.
Yes, a bunch of women struggling to control a fire hose is exactly the same as dodging bullets raising the flag at Iwo Jima.
There's almost 5 of them trying to hold 1 hose, did they even get it near the fire?
More feminist propaganda from the lamestream media.
Now I'm off to watch the chick from Dexter disarm and beat up 5 guys...
you dont think a women can kick your azz..i would bet my sister over you you dirt bag
hey mighty mouse..go to the fire station and try and hold there hose..with full force..of water coming out I'm pretty darn strong myself and i can't even do it pressure is to strong .....might mouse
These ladies in a single moment are doing more for their country than you ever will.
just curious: does bf in your name stand for bull fertilizer
Psst.. Dexter isnt real. These women were (are)
This picture may have taken place during the attack or between the 2 attacks. Since we weren't sure there would not be another attack or even an invasion to suggest this is anything other than heroic, or some kind of feminist plot is beyond comprehension. I hope your mother is proud of you.

Clearly you have never seen a cartoon where one person holds the hose, and goes flying around...or the race riots where it took 5 men to hose one black man down...and back then cops were in shape, compared to now.
