When I was a little kid growing up outside of New York City, my family always tried to make the yearly trip to Rockefeller Plaza to see the Christmas tree and the holiday displays at the department stores. The skating rink and the Plaza have always felt like a special place around the holidays, full of energy and perhaps a bit of nostalgia as well, at least for me.
Opened in 1936, The Ice Skating Rink at Rockefeller Center celebrates its 75th year as one of the most visited attractions in New York City. The panorama above is a composite of over 65 separate photographs merged together to represent an immersive 360-degree view from the center of the ice.
Below is a video from Brian Williams on the history of the ice rink and a time-lapse video of the installation of the 12-ton, 2011 Christmas tree.
People have been hitting the ice at Rockefeller Center since 1936. Today, the ice skating rink is one of the most visited New York destinations during the holiday season. Brian Williams gives a special tour of the rink and looks back on its history.

IMO referring to Rockefeller Center as "Rock Center" seems to cheapen such an iconic place.
Republicans don't have license or credit to comment on aesthetics. They're walking sacks of incontinence, and don't belong in an urban environment. Go back to Kentucky.
It is just an opnion, there is no need to fear me. Peace brother
Well Foxy,
truth is any rational person would fear a fox noise true believer. Just like a baby with a hand gun. You just never know what they will do, and it's better to be safe than sorry.
I love this place. During the depression my grandfather, an architect was out of work for more that two years. Rockefeller Center gave him his first work in his field in all of that time. Rockefeller liked his work and sent him to Williamsburg to restore buildings and work on the Williamsburg Inn. He was never short of work again for the rest of his life. To us, Rockefeller Center is a symbol of hope.
Here's comes the buzz kill Fox News!
Why don't they use a live video feed for the panoramic shot? Those cameras do exist - it would be a lot more interesting to watch.
I just landed a triple axel!!!
Having grown up in New York in the '60s and '70s, Rockefeller Center was one of our main hangouts and people-watching destinations, especially when the expensively-dressed gawking tourists would come to town, pushing their merry way through crowds of people to get to the front of the line of people waiting to get on the ice.
When we'd spot someone doing that, when they got on the ice, we'd give some homie a quarter to wipe out in front of the nasty tourists and knock their skates out from under them.
Sometimes I really miss New York....
Another of Gods many wonders---Merry Christmas!!
