Comet turns into a Christmas star

Guillaume Blanchard / ESO

Comet Lovejoy streaks through the pre-dawn skies above the European Southern Observatory's Paranal Observatory in Chile on Dec. 22.

If anyone questioned whether Comet Lovejoy would become the star of the season — and a lot of people did — the pictures of the past few days have removed any doubt. In the Southern Hemisphere, the death-defying comet is truly this year's "Star of Wonder."

Not only do we have an amazing video of the long-tailed iceball rising from the horizon, as seen from the International Space Station, we also have the stunning pictures and video released today by the European Southern Observatory. Skywatchers at the ESO's Paranal Observatory in Chile captured the comet against the glittering backdrop of the Milky Way.

"For me, this comet is a Christmas present to the people who will stay at Paranal over Christmas," said Guillaume Blanchard, who snapped a picture of dawn at Paranal with the Milky Way and Lovejoy dominating the sky.

Gabriel Brammer put together a time-lapse sequence of the comet rising just before the sun. For devotees of the night sky, it's the latest must-see video. The clip also features the pencil-thin laser beam that Paranal's Very Large Telescope uses as a guide star for its astronomical observations. Expand the video to full screen to increase the awesomeness.

"With this spectacular sequence of the 2011 Christmas Comet Lovejoy, ESO would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year," the observatory's staff says in today's image advisory.

Amen to that!

Look carefully at the horizon in the photo - it's proof that the Earth is not round, but 'concave' (shaped like the inside of a bowl).

lol. And it's not even April 1st.

man, i hope you're being sarcastic or something. They're using a fish eye wide angle lens to get everything in the shot. It makes everything look like that.

That would be the moon. Sunlight reflects off of it and prevents you from seeing the surface. Instead you see it as a ball of light...until the position is such as such to no longer have the sun glaring off the moon.

Wonderfully beautiful. Truly awesome. The abject beauty of this comet is the best thing
that I have seen in a while.. Hopefully there will only be comments on the
beauty of this comet. Hopefully no politics or god does not come into the conversation.
This IS the best thing that I have seen it the news in a long time. I really
                  enjoyed it. Thanks.

Looks like you brought God and politics into this. Seeing as how God is the eternal fountainhead of all truth, God is inseperable from all things, political or otherwise.

To a believer saying you do not believe in God is like saying you do not believe the sky is blue. We say just look up and see, and you say you don't need to because you already know the sky is not blue. Then you wait till it's darkest before you look and then you say, see I told you it wasn't blue! Or you lie to yourself and play a semantical game to convince yourself that because the colors we see are only the ones reflected, the sky is actually every color but blue...(You can find the analogy in that on your own.)

But if you really cannot find God within yourself, then try looking up again when the sky isn't blue. Really look and open your mind. If you cannot see God out there then you are trying too hard to see what is already right in front of you.

I see literally billions and billions and billions of stars (paraphrase Carl Sagan). I see that given enough time random chance could create anything. I do not see anything that would indicate the existence of any of the fairy stories from Red Riding Hood to the invisible p**ck in the sky. However reading newsvine displays ample empirical evidence for regression.

Ridiculous radical, enough time that random chance could create ? What a very invalid statement. Random chance is nothing. Random chance is not a tangible thing. Random chance is nothing more then a number figure.. It is nothing. So to say random chance can create something , is quite silly.

The infinite monkey theorem states that a monkey hitting keys at random on a typewriter keyboard for an infinite amount of time will almost surely type a given text, such as the complete works of William Shakespeare. The Infinite Monkey Theorem look it up. Evolution is dependent on time and random chance. Given enough time say 1 billion years would be plenty of time form organic molecules to create life. Organic molecules have an affinity for each other. They combine in all sorts of fashion and considering a one celled organism is composed with as little as eight amino acids. Given the right ingredients and time they can create a simple one celled organism. A billion years and the presence of basic carbon molecules (amino acids) Life was generated. You do not need a god to design life you just need the ingredients and time to produce the recipe of life.

You have to understand the true vastness of the universe to understand why random chance plays such a pivotal role. The universe is at least 13 billion light years across, home to 100 billion galaxies, all home to 100 billion stars. Even seemingly impossible probabilities (like say, life, for example) come into existence in this vastness.

Random chance, the presence of organic compounds (ones that contain carbon) and the time for the molecules to try all different kinds of configurations and you ended up with the eight molecules of life. A reply to Radical Idea,

I respect your point of view and the random theory. However, I believe in a Master Creator (if I can appreciate Michael Angelo why not a "master" creator who can create this ever so beautiful and amazing universe?). I think the problem here is your "christian god". That god is from where?

I believe in the Muslim Master Designer of the Universe. It is specifically written in Wise Quran that this "creator" is NOT a human nor a man neither a woman. Just enjoy your life by caring for your neighbors, stop killing my Arab brothers and Muslims. The designer of this universe has asked us to call Him (not a male..) "Allah" - I was told the Hebrew language has a similar word.

So who "coined" the ENGLISH word "god"? This is the FIRST problem that I want to look into. I think the Evil Slave Master's "god" is indeed something very sinister - It perhaps is the Devil or Satan. Thus the "Radical" has avoided being a victim of the Devil or Satan but has not yet found the TRUTH - as Allah address self in Wise Quran - "I am the TRUTH".

Look into it - I mean the Wise Qur'an - Learn it without anyone brainwashing you. Study it like your Physics, Chemistry and Calculus book- No Tutors - You will find the TRUTH about our life and the reason for being born - TO HELP ONE ANOTHER!! not to steal oil, coffee, sugar or banana. Well.. If one has ever been an OPPRESSED "slave" , falsely accused new slave = "terrorist" or lost land like Native Americans .. then it is easy to see the TRUTH... like a sick man with fever/nausea appreciates HEALTH.

Obstinate, self-righteous only as long as not HUMBLED. Would have never known it if my great-grandparents were not treated like animals by Southern Slave Trading BEASTS.

Your need for a being to direct nature is both childish and short sighted. You can be happy with ID but I will direct you to Pope John Paul II statement on evolution to the Vatican Academy of Sciences. These are a group of priest and scientist who work under the funding of the Catholic Church. I am well acquainted with one priest who is chasing bosons (The God Particle) and as of my last communication with him he was as he put it coming extremely close. Religion and science do not need to be at odds with each other but you have to give each its own ground. Religion answers the questions science can't. That list is getting smaller and smaller with each new discovery.

I have shown you where there is a 4.8 million year old outcropping of rock is.

I took you on a guided tour of the Big Bang.

I shown you where and causality began and where it limits are.

I showed where and why time began

You sir are a fools fool. I highly recommend some education. A couple of courses in chemistry to include organic chemistry, a couple of geology courses to include historical geology, a couple physics courses (introductory to physics I and II is sufficient, and an astronomy class. If you do this you can quit playing scientist and actually have some idea of what you are talking about. I sincerely hope you take my advice as you have a quick and bright mind and your mind is a terrible thing to waste. And, I know education is expensive but ignorance is even more so.

How is the need for a creator childish ? Something made it, it surely just didnt happen out of nothing. Unless your a magician. And even if you were the magician existed to make the magic. Who is John Paul to make any statement ? He is not qualified, he wasnt there to witness creation. If he accepts evolution, then he rejects the bible. You cant pick and choose what you like from the bible and toss the rest out. I dont support the catholic views anyway. 4.8 million years old rock still isnt explaining the whole creation goo to man. A guided tour of the big bang, an event you all claim, but no one was there to see it happen, or how it happened. Why is there something instead of nothing. I am not the fool, I accept God as my creator, I am a believer in science that shows God can and did make the universe. I also believe in the science that shows how bad science is for old world views, and Goo to man. I have been in college, and I still didnt accept world view. I had many debates there as well. Keep on dreaming those dreams of mans views. Ill keep with mine and my creator God thank you.

You do a very good job of grossly over-simplifying scientific ideas which does nothing less than show a deep founded misunderstanding of the processes at hand. Things "happen out of nothing" all of the time, literally. Particles pop in and out of existence even in the complete vacuum of space. This is so well documented it must be taken into account during experiments with sub atomic particles.

We aren't sure why there was more matter than anti-matter at the beginning (and thus why we are here today) but we are searching, which in my opinion is much better than claiming to already know how it happened. Simply writing it off as the product of a supernatural being is lazy at best.

And even if you were the magician existed to make the magic.

That is a version of the watch maker argument, I find this version more compelling (it was linked by a fellow viner before).

Im well aware of the cashmir effect , but once again there is an issue with the particles. We observe they phase in and out, but when one does phase out, does it truly no longer exist , or is it the same thing that has moved some where else. Also , how could you obtain the data to know from the first point of the prticles phasing in and out. Were they always existent, or did they just appear from no where. Their beginning, did they have one ? Could science prove any of that ? No it can not.

Well the absence of anti matter is an issue, dark matter. Even when things become some what explainable, its still never something anyone can be sure about, because once again it will never be something that can be observational science for that era , point in time.

Even when we mess with Uranium decay, carbon dating, as time goes on science is finding and changing things about it. There are certain factors to know that things do affect the rate of decay. And there is no way to know for sure how much of what was present over X amount of time. You can assume based of what you can observe now, but you cant from time so long ago. Look at speed of light and its decay being looked at. Or things traveling faster then light. Yes were finding out newer things all the time, but this type of science is too much guessing and assuming for me to ever beleive in because it always changes. I believe in a God who never changes. Science that shows the possibilities of a creation point of view. It fits , it works, I accept it. I wont change that.

I was in the Navy, deploying to Westpac in late 73 when the comet Kahoutek was in the sky. It DID appear as a bright star low in the western sky and did not have a tail.

Jesus was born of Mary or addressed in the Wise Quran as MARIAM. Allah (The Most Beneficient and Merciful) says in the Noble Quran that Mariam is the "Best Of Best" woman that Allah has created for she SILENTLY and FIRMLY believed in Allah while others accused her of defective chastity. More Muslim women have this name than so called hypocritical money grabbing "christian" who use the Noble Messenger of Allah "Isah" (Jesus) as a COMMODITY or PR to increase S&P Stock Market Index. Shameless and fake "religion" and unjust to a great Prophet of Allah. I left the "bible" for this very reason and found the Quran at the library. BTW- Saddam Hussein never behaved like a real Muslim- he was a hypocrite in my opinion. Let Allah decide who is FAKE Hypocrite Muslim and who is a Real Muslim.

First I had to contend with christains now it Muslims. I seemed to have attracked an unsavory element. Let us see if I can get this right. World come in world Attention EXCUSE ME. God does not exist. Allah does not exist. There is no such thing as a god in any shape way or form. Gods are an invention of man. God did not invent man. The sooner people get past this infantile notion the sooner baby can walk. How can I say it any plainer. There is no god.

The comet video is really cool. I live in a small town in Minnesota, USA. Even living on the edge of town I can see quit a few stars. Astronomy is so very interesting and wonderous.

True enough. The Christmas holiday that modern Christians celebrate is nothing more than a Pagan holiday hijacked by Christianity. Do some research on sites and in books that are objective and not biased one way or another. Truth Will Be Known.

That is so stupid. It is common through out history that new superior beliefs systems incorporate certain asthetic aspects of obsolete inferior beliefs systems. Just like evolution, it is built on what came before but with improvements in all the most critical areas. Christianity is by far the most superior belief system, cultural, religious or simply philosophically, the proof is in the fruit it has yeilded. The whole civilized world counts the years since his death. Christianity is at the root of the founding of America and the advancement of all European nations. Christianity is NOT to blame for the conflicts of cultures or any violence or otherwise immoral actions of individuals or any groups of individuals. The simple obvious reason is because there is not one single teaching of Jesus that condones, promotes, or encourages any act of violence, intolerance or subversion. That is simply a fact. Causality is the Will of God, and Causality has made it clear, Christianity is superior in all ways. Causality is never wrong.

I was going to take apart your post line by line, however after consideration, this isn't the place for that. Also, it seems you have never actually read the bible (or if you did you skipped vast expanses of it). It's the only logical conclusion I can come to after reading your post. If you have read it, take a few classes on reading comprehension, reread it and get back to me.

Oh and stay on topic, what this has to do with a comet I'll never know. If you want to further discuss your beliefs do it on a different article, something relative.

Someday. Sometime. Somewhere else. "One never knows, does one?"

Actually, we do know. The Earth will not turn into a comet or a meteor shower. Here is the Earth Future:

+ 1 Billion years: The surface temperature will be about 250 degrees F. The oceans will have boiled away by then. We better move before then.

+ 2 Billion years: If we can still be here, we'll be able to see the Andromeda galaxy colliding with our Milky Way galaxy. Interestingly, the Earth and Sun will not be impacted. the spaces between stars is too great.

+ 5 Billion years: Our Sun will swell into a red giant due to the depletion of hydrogen fuel. At that time the Sun's radius will come just inside or pas the Earth orbit. In either case, the Earth will just boil away.

+ 10 Trillion years: All the stars in the universe will have burned out. Only black holes will exist.

+ 60th cosmological decade: The black holes will have evaporated.

After this, the universe will be utterly cold, dark and without any features.

                                                            - Feel kinda small now? Well don't feel small. We have brain that enable us to figure this out. That's amazing.

I hope we start a small program to get an exploratory sattelite to jaunt through the solar corona....I bet there is a lot to learn, and this comet just proved that it can be done, not withstanding the naysayers who will deny we can do anything at all. Lovejoy came along at a very timely point in history to prove to us again not to extrapolate our preconditioned assumptions too far and call it fact. Just the opposite, call it theory, unproven theory. For me, this was an xmas present for sure. With an uncountable number of objects up there, xmas will always have an astronomy present....coolest to me, every night, up in the sky, something amazing, surprising, awe inspiring, and worthy of stretching the envelope of human comprehension just a bit more will forever be new and in the sky.
