Inside Iowa: Voters describe what they want in a candidate

By Evan Vucci, Associated Press

There's nothing quite like the political spectacle that gets put on here in Iowa every four years. You spend endless hours driving to small town coffee shops, firehouses, and American Legion halls chasing the candidates that are vying for the Presidency.

Evan Vucci / AP

Republican presidential candidate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, accompanied by his wife Callista, makes remarks during a campaign stop in Independence, Iowa, Monday, Jan. 2.

There is a saying that "You can't fake Iowa." Iowans expect politicians to get out and meet them face to face, shake hands, and answer questions. The best moments covering campaigns happen when the façade of the campaign breaks down, and real interactions take place. I was curious about what Iowans are looking for in a year when one candidate hasn't broken away from the pack. Watch the video below to see what I found. (Follow Evan Vucci on Twitter)

Why are people so excited about Obama when HE is the one that SIGNED the NDAA? YOu know, the ones allowing American citizens to be INDEFINITELY DETAINED?

We need somone who is going to adhere to the constitution and not abuse the power we gave them. Ron Paul 2012.

You have the electoral system to

if you don't have this system, there is no reason for smaller population states to stay in the Union. (gives smaller states a stronger voice)

Prevents one region from dominating with it's ideas.

Slows change down, giving the country stability and time to correct smaller errors in it's direction.

Forces a president and a congress to consider the whole of the country and not just the individuals that got them that 50% + 1 vote dictatorship.

American Serf - getting rid of the electoral system puts us on the road to Venezuela form of government. Currently Hugo Chavez is slowly nationalizing all private industry, imprisoning people who dissent, and pocketing billions of the countries revenues. It all started with a popular vote president.

We can see in Iowa the real face of Bible Belt politics. I hate to say it but as someone said Iowans, raise corn not freedom most of their platforms are taken straight from the sins as dictated by the modern prophets and interpreters of real down to Earth religion. Nothing to say about improving education, thats okay where do you stand on abortion. Don't have a clue on how to lower taxes and the debt, never you mind, what do you think about them gays holding hands and getting married. Now if you talk about cutting off farm subsidies you can get a rise out of them as they escort you to the border of Nebraska. Not one issue about the problems confronting America, taxes, unemployment rising health care or tens of other critical problems. All they want to know is are you going to deal with them abortions and gays.

It seems to me that the Republicans spend and raise the debt and deficit without any problem at all. The only time they scream about it is when we get a Democratic President. Look at what G.W. Bush did. The debt was starting to get under control and he cut taxes, largest cuts being for the wealthy. Once before 9/11 and then again when we were in two very expensive wars -- lowest figures being about 10.6 billion per month.

Believer - I know several "Republicans" that were never really Republicans. One is a former employer, and the other married into the family. Can't for the life of me see how they even remotely saw themselves as republican.

But then, I do know a couple of democrats that I can't for the life of me see how they saw themselves as Democrats either.

No one cares what Iowa wants. They represent only a small portion of the country. Evangelicals are few and far between in California and NY.

Not exactly true on either account. As a Californian who has lived a few years in Iowa (plan to move back to Cali this summer), Iowa has a diversity of people, religion, and opinions that cannot be distilled to "Evangelicals". I don't know the technical breakdown but since moving here I've met mostly Catholics and some Quakers and a few Protestants, none of which have been Evangelical. Also a few Mosques in the area.

In contrast, Evangelicals predominated with a few baptists and less Catholic churches in the central valley. (other protestants I'm sure but almost every corner had a evangelical or baptist church compared to just a few Methodist etc.)

Personally though, I'm glad the Iowa primary is becoming less important as it's losing it's predictive power for elections. No state is a good representative for a nation as diverse as the USA.

Why the dig on California? Ug, both Iowa and California are beautiful places full of smart, nice, and diverse people.

Anyone who want's to generalize about either probably hasn't been there, hasn't traveled to more then one location in the state, or is just using confirmation bias to perpetuate their prejudice.

Iowa has NO track record on the democrat side. Most Democrat presidents lost in Iowa the first year they won the presidency.

The republican side is different. Better than half of successful Republican nominees won Iowa.

                #6.5 - Tue Jan 3, 2012 1:37 PM EST

DG - that may be true. I honestly don't know too much about that since I tend to ignore primaries *shamefaced*. I know that Iowa is supposed to be important anyway, but I would like to know the predictive power compared with other states. My point is, regardless of it being first, to what degree does a successful nomination here cause/influence later elections versus just correlate (i.e. - if a candidate is the most popular in one state, it may just correlate with popularity overall).

I do get that it is supposed to influence voters - but I don't know how much that influence extends - I've never voted based on who I thought would win - just who I wanted to win.

Unfortunately for America it looks like many Americans want their candidate to float down on a cloud holding hands with Jesus, who is holding an American flag and a banner that says "There is nothing that America can't do and the rest of the world can go frig itself!"

Why do we do this ridiculous dance? The reality is that no one in the mainstream cares a hoot what Iowa thinks or votes about anything. Iowa can do it's right wing conservative dance and the rest of the country will reelect Barak Obama as president of the US as he has brains and sophistication and the Republicans have nothing except for Huntsman that is too intelligent to be taken seriously by the mainstream Republican Party.

Look at you people! Good Lord, would you listen to yourselves? Too many "white people" for your liking? I lived there for a year, the people I met and interacted with were kind and intelligent (can't say so much for the other side of the river in Illinois) You should be ashamed of yourselves!

Iowa wants corn ethanol. There are better ways to make ethanol. Iowa is wrong about that and Iowa republicans are wrong about everything.

But then again, look what they have to choose from: Innumerable dunces and a flip-flopping robot. What an insane clown show.

What do you expect when corn provides much of the state's income? All states have their issues but as a democrat, I prefer Iowa republicans to the ones back home in California - at least these ones seem to be more about economics then government trying to run your life with anti-choice and anti-gay rights fervor (not that it doesn't get heated here about that- just not as bad as in my home-town).

Obama LOSES in 2012, That would be a Real "New Year"!

4 more years of Mr "O" will devastate the United States. Does anyone here REALLY want the United States of America to turn into Europe?

By the way, if you don't like the Constitution, LEAVE The Country!

Europe is not a country. Are you one of Palin's students?

I'm reminded of the Blues Brothers Good 'ol Boys Bar scene when asked what kind of music do they usually have here ...

*Oh we got both kinds ... we got Country and Western* ...

The GOP is so against the things Jesus preached about...helping the poor, the elderly and the sick...helping one another... loving and being your brother's keeper. Do they even read the Bible? Atleast Democrats do. Jesus 0 : Reagan 1. Empty heads!

Yep, the GOP doesn't think they are their brother's/sister's keeper. Maybe their brother's/sister's overlord, but not their keeper.

LMAO! Listen to the left... There was once a time when the majority of Americans did help those less fortunate directly. Now the left wants to delegate individual efforts to a big government entity that only uses a shotgun approach to aid.

I wonder who is more efficient in distributing aid, big government or the individual?

Such Drivel as the likes of I have never seen. Impressive, no absolutely not. Naught but major idiocy on BOTH sides of this fence. Elephantz & Jakk-asses but BOTH appear to be jackasses of a grand degree.

Ron Paul is the only non-flipper for 30 years, but most JACKASSES in both parties do not have enough sense to put him up front for God & country.
