Angry mobs of protesters stopped gas station owners from selling fuel Tuesday while others lit a bonfire on a major highway in an attempt to thwart the government's removal of a cherished consumer subsidy that had kept gas affordable for more than two decades.

Policemen beat up a protester during a rally against the removal of the fuel subsidy in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos Jan. 3, 2012. Hundreds of demonstrators in Nigeria's commercial capital Lagos shut petrol stations, formed human barriers along motorways and hijacked buses on Tuesday in protest against the shock doubling of fuel prices after a government subsidy was removed.

 AP reports:

An angry mob protesting spiraling fuel prices assaulted a soldier Tuesday and one man was killed at a demonstration elsewhere, signs of growing unrest over the government's hugely unpopular decision to end a subsidy program that had kept gas costs down for more than two decades.

An Associated Press reporter at the scene in the megacity of Lagos said the protest had started with activists wielding signs and walking down a major expressway, but before long angry protesters lit bonfires and vandalized at least three gas stations. A wounded man later ran along the road shouting: "The police shot me, take me to hospital!"

In the central city of Ilorin, another violent protest where policemen fired tear gas left a man dead. The National Labor Congress accused the police in a statement Tuesday of shooting the "antifuel hike protester." Continue reading...

I didn't realize that Nigerians spoke english - and good for them for standing up, speaking out - I do hope that the trend continues - for their benefit, for the benefit of their country.

Big oil has ruined the Delta as it did the Gulf and now their government is screwing the people. Sound familiar?

@ Kate 344962- Lol, ignorance is bliss! Of course they speak English. They were colonized by the British. While they have their own tribal languages, English is what is taught in schools.

The city is a confluence of cultures, populated by Yoruba, Hausa, Fulani, Nupe, Baruba, other Nigerians and foreign nationals. The indigenous people's culture is predominantly Islamic, as most of the Islamic festivals are greatly celebrated compared with anywhere in the country. Many ceremonial activities, mostly with religious aspects, take place in the city throughout the year.

Kate - Actually, English is the official language of Nigeria. I guess this is because it was a British colony until 1960.

This is just one more example of what happens when a government runs out of other people's money to spend. They cut the fuel subsidy so now the people are going to have to pay the real cost for their gasoline. This was no doubt expected to be a very unpopular move, particularly in a country with a very low per capita income. At least they are making changes before they get in debt trouble like several European countries.

And what do you think our "capitalists" have been doing in this country for decades? Have you heard of the 4 billion we give to the oil industry every year? Or the corn subsidies for ethanol producers?

how patronizing a statement. Most of the brothers and sisters over in Africa know 3-5 languages, whether it is Nigeria, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, S. Africa, or Madagascar. I bet you don't even know 2 (and I'll admit that I don't).

Socialism? The cash is not going to the people. It goes mostly to corporations. Our country overspends on the military, foreign aid, ands corporate welfare. What has happened to this country is the doings of crooks inside the government and the corporations. Combine the war profiteering, the bloated military budget, historically low taxation with tons of loopholes---we're screwed.

Take it up with her not me, because that is what her statement implied. Please do tell how my statement is "racist" by defending and pointing out that people in Africa know multiple languages although black people are often the subject of racist criticism about how "dumb" they are, which totally doesn't make any sense. How are they fluent in so many languages if all of this criticism is true and not just racist propaganda?

            #1.17 - Wed Jan 4, 2012 11:37 AM EST

You know, Tek, I did not read her post that way until you brought it up. From one minority to another, you'd go further encouraging people to learn things after you point out someone's lack of knowledge, then jumping all over them. If you haven't figured it out yet, most people in any county don't know a hell of a lot about other countries. The US isn't particularly worse at it than the majority of other nations out there.

Now, that having been said, there are a lot of places in the world where people speak multiple languages. It also helps coming from a part of the world where nations aren't monolithic in size and power. You don't happen to see a lot of Chinese people learning languages they don't need, albeit many are fluent in multiple languages in their region for the simple point that China is very diverse in language. You don't see a lot of Russians bothering to learn other languages. And you don't see a lot of South Americans speaking languages other than Spanish or Portugese. There are exceptions, and we have them too, but Nigeria has the benefit of being diverse in language and yes, to its credit. No need to smash someone over the head for not knowing that.

but the difference is our nation was founded on protest against a King (government) taking from us in the form of taxation without representation. The Nigerians are protesting because their Government has stopped GIVING them something that they can't afford to GIVE........ BIG DIFFERENCE, so please don't try to equate what the Nigerians are doing to what our founding Fathers did.

So exactly what has been taken ... Their fuel prices were being subsidized by their government...their government gets the money to subsidize the fuel prices by levying taxes...So it is a vicious circle..Only thing is that government gets to take and use its share before they give less back.

Oh..wait..I get it now...you think that the evil rich should have to pay more so that you can pay less and probably get back more than you pay in.

When you are selling something like Big Mac's or widgets and you want to raise the cost, people can say "eh, ill do without" or "No thanks." When It is something that people can not do without like Oil or electricity, then it becomes a different matter and you find yourself doing something you would normally not do. Note to the world leaders. Never raise up prices on the staple items people need to live on.

I think you're mistaken. Americans are numb to the 'new normal'. Gas prices are way up, people are having to decide which room to heat, actual unemployment is 12%-14% and much higher for minorities, people are losing their houses, inflation is eating what little money people have, the housing market has destroyed the retirement plans of many, and people are not doing something they would not normally do. Too many distractions. The Super Bowl is coming up, the NBA is back.........

We have plenty of oil available right here at a price much lower than keeping the oil lanes open. Lets get the Navy out of there and spend the tens of billions on our own people working on our own petroleum resources.

As a counter argument, why don't we funnel some of those resources into technologies to rid us of our dependence on oil as an energy? Would that not also create jobs?

Imagine what could be accomplished if the government spent only 10% of the cost of the two wars on technology to advance alternative energies. We would be much farther along. For every Solyndra there are success stories as well.

                                  Lost,

I understand, but you can't just not invest because you lost some money. That's how technology works - sometimes you win and sometimes you don't.

It's the concept that we need to reduce our dependence on oil that matters. Oil is a finite resource and will eventually run out along with those jobs. We need to look farther into the future and have a better plan.

TIGGLE we already have the technology but the oil companies own the pattens and they are not letting the eco cat out of the bag because they are making way to much money with the status qo and our politicians are helping them..

Tiggle, Reduction of dependence starts at home, I have greatly reduced my dpendence on oil, Not because of its green benefits but because I saw ways to save money, Solar arrays,Wind turbines, Wind powered water pump,Biomass heating systems, cfl's and tankless water heater. I have done this because it saves me money, I still like the roar of the V8 in my truck and the power of the diesel that moves my tractor...Americans all complain about energy costs but few ever actually take any steps to reduce them...That is unless someone else is subsidizing them. Are we really so totally and completely incapable of doing and thinking for ourselves that our government must think for us. Do you really think that someone hundres or thousands of miles away from you knows what is best for your needs and wants...yes...Wants are a big part of this...There are certain things I want and a high horsepower V8 is one of them.

I would be pissed too if the price doubled over night, but then again the gov had been paying for half of it for 20 years so they had time.

They would have been wiser to raise money in some other way than to double the cost of a necessity. If the average worker can't afford the increase it will negatively affect government income in other ways so the Gov. should have thought this through. Does the government own the gas stations? If so, I understand the protester's burning them, but if they are privately owned what did they accomplish by destroying the stations?

@Brian- They had time to do what? It's not about days gone by, this is a result of greed and corruption. The President, like our own, and all the confused candidates want to move the country forward by cutting government funded programs. It just so happens that Nigeria is MUCH worse off than we are and cannot afford this massive overnight increase in cost. We'd be just as hard-pressed if our gas prices quadrupled literally over night. Their minimum wage is less than 150USD per MONTH. They could not afford it 20 years ago, they cannot afford it now.

Now I'm all confused, they beat up their protesters, we beat up our protesters and we are different some way, somehow? Russia also beats up protesters, so maybe we can form a union of BPFD, beat up protesters for democracy. All those in favor, say Aye. The ayes have it. Protest dismissed.

That means they are mad as hell because their government decided to spend this money on much needed infrastructure projects. This subsidy has continued to be one of this country's biggest expenses!

The money goes to the study of alternative resources that never come. When they do they have to go through years of environmental red tape to even begin to work with what they have learned.

After investing many billions of dollars the oil companies make about seven cents on a gallon of gasoline. The government, on the other had, invests nothing and gets about forty-five cents a gallon. 66 cents in California, 64 cents in Hawaii, 63 cents in Connecticut, 61 cents in Illinois, 65 cents in New York. So the question is; Who's gouging who? People are angry with the oil companies. They provide what you pay for. Does your government?

pacos- they may not make a huge percentage of profit on gasoline, but they've already made plenty of profit on the oil it was made from, after selling it back and forth several times.

makes about as much sense as giving welfare checks to someone w/10-15 children cut both-

So if they are selling it back and forth who are they making a profit from...Themselves...They are making record profits because they are selling record amounts of oil and gasoline nothing more and nothing less.

But...its just so much easier to hate those big companies that make all those record profits...Afterall they must be stealing it from you.

The truth is If there were no rich people or big corporations you would still be poor and probably would be poorer. The reason you are poor is because you are who you are...It is not anyone elses fault it is yours.

Is this not the country that has "Gulf" oil spills every year due to old poorly maintained equipment? The oil industry has destroyed the environment in that country and the country has nothing to show for it at all, but the mess. The oil companies try to say it is thieves, but when you pay the workers pennies on the dollar wtf do you expect. You want people to be smart, but not smart enough to know the value of things...wtf. Why our media does not care about these spills amazes me, no money I guess.

I feel like I am talking to a bunch of new parents that have never had kids before and have NO clue how to raise them right. Punishment is the only answer...it has worked so well throughout history. Spare the rod and spoil the child...moderation, moderation, moderation. How many ass beating did Jesus give out? One or two is all that should ever be needed.

Who by the way supports our system and lets the wonderful people that we have in power make decisions? Who elected these people, why the American people did, that is who. "I did not vote for that person", well the other motherf***er would not have done any better I hate to tell you. "Why is that", because they do not make the decisions, money does. It is sad and funny since money is something that humans created, wtf are we doing? I guess we should wait for a savior like Hitler or Saddam to come and save us all. Both were elected by the people and both lead them to ruin. The people are as much to blame as they are.

THERE IS NOT A SINGLE PERFECT SYSTEM THAT MAN CAN CREATE, WE ARE TRYING TO COPY, or TO DUPLICATE GOD'S WORK. Get over it and get off your high horse, capitalism and socialism are not perfect, and we need a combo of the two.

You are dead wrong. The 'decisions' are made by agencies not people we elect. Check it out. There was a piece about 40,000 new "laws" going into effect this year. Guess what? They are (mostly) just new regulations, not laws, created by unelected people working in meetings without public attendence or input. Buy a vowel, get a clue, legislatures do not run this counrty. You can be fined, or jailed, for breaking a rule made by an un-elected person you never heard of, working in a mystery location, following secret instructions.

you're such a hypocrite. The computer you're typing on is made of components which contain petroleum products -- so why don't YOU stop using your computer before you ask others to stop driving (which I doubt you've done). Or stop eating food or wearing clothes that have been delivered by trucks which use petroleum fuel...... oh, that would make your life too hard.

Not as easy as you think numb skull!

As "told-ya-so" points out, everything in your life today revolves around petroleum products. From manufacturing, transportation, and our military to keep you safe, it all revolves around petroleum.

There is one way to get cheaper gasoline and that is to vote our current president out and even then we wont notice or see any benefits from utilizing our own resources until 2023.

So in the mean time, educate yourself to the importance of petroleum products unless you live like "Grizzly Adams".

as a nigerian we have all thr right to fight with out last blood by way of stoping the so call government of this country, because we in nigeria buy american made cars and is way cheaper in america because it made there, so the oil be it fuel or gas is found here in our parent yard and you don't expect us to be paying the same amount those who don't have the product pay. the president budget for feeding is about a billion naira for him only and their are some people in nigeria who feed less then a 1 dollar a day in a country that is the 6 oil producer in the wolrd. is simple we can't pay a dollars for what we produce here in our back yard while countries who don't have oil pay the same amount. government should cut their cost not the citizen on the street. a nigerian senator earns about five hundred thousand dollars every 3 months and american president earn 400 a year so what are we not saying ehough is enough for those so call leaders.... if is war they want we will give it to them

                                                                  #25.4 - Tue Jan 3, 2012 4:24 PM EST

Yes folks we are a world based on oil products from birth to death. But there are other sources of and free ones too. We should use oil only to produce the materials we need to harvest these energies and we can do it.

But "we" don't want to do it because those who made their wealth( and still are making it) and those who make a living out of it ( mostly Republicans ) don't want to change that as they fix prices and do so well. I can understand I suppose.
