The head of Egypt's ruling military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, vowed Thursday to track down those behind soccer violence that killed at least 74 people in Port Said, speaking in a rare phone call to an Egyptian TV channel.

"These kind of events can happen anywhere in the world but we will not let those behind this get away," Tantawi said, speaking to the sports television channel owned by Al Ahly, one of the teams playing. He said victims would receive compensation after their cases were examined.

At least 47 people were arrested in connection with the melee, Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim said. Read the full story.

Security bears lot of blame. Coach said fans were throwing rocks etc even before game and security did nothing. That emboldened them and led to this.

Do 74 people usually die and HUNDREDS more suffer major internal & external injuries during any sporting event in any other country? Of course not, that was a rhetorical question...

I'm sure there's been a few deaths over the years b/c even i've seen sections of stadiums collapse, people getting trampled and huge brawls breaking out in the streets after certain football matches, but have a lot of people actually died as a result of one game or even a series of games related to a tournament?

Of course not and contrary to Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, this doesn't happen all over the world. The most embarrassing part of this entire story is that there's almost zero local outrage outside of individuals who were directly affected by it.

      For the bigots and islamophobes

May 24, 1964 - Lima, Peru; 318 people are killed and another 500 injured in riots at National Stadium after Argentina beats Peru in an Olympic qualifying match. The pandemonium breaks out when the referee disallows a Peruvian goal in the final two minutes.

March 4, 1971 - Salvador, Brazil; A fight and a wild rush broke out in the grandstands, killing four and injuring 1,500.

Feb. 17, 1974 - Cairo, Egypt; Crowds attempting to enter a club game broke down barriers and 49 people were trampled to death.

Oct. 31, 1976 - Yaounde, Cameroon; After a penalty kick was awarded to Cameroon in a World Cup qualifying match vs. the Congo, the Congolese goalie attacked the Gambian referee. A fight broke out and the president of Cameroon, watching the game at home on television, sent in paratroopers by helicopter. Two bystanders died.

Dec. 6, 1976 - Port-au-Prince, Haiti; At a World Cup qualifier between Haiti and Cuba, the visitors scored and a Haitian fan set off a firecracker. Fans thought it was gunfire and panicked, knocking down a soldier, whose gun went off and killed a small boy and girl in the crowd. Further panic caused two people to be trampled to death, and one man died jumping over a wall. The soldier committed suicide.

Oct. 20, 1982 - Moscow; 340 are reportedly killed at a European Cup match between Soviet club Spartak Moscow and Haarlem of the Netherlands. Police are blamed for pushing fans down a narrow, icy staircase before the end of the match. When a late goal is scored, exiting fans try to re-enter the stadium and create a “human mincer.” Moscow officials dispute the claims made in the publication of the Soviet Sports Committee, saying only 61 died and police did not push fans.

May 29, 1985 - Brussels, Belgium; 39 people are killed at the European Champions Cup Final at Heysel Stadium when riots break out and a wall separating rival fans of England’s Liverpool and Italy’s Juventus of Turin collapses.

March 10, 1987 - Tripoli, Libya; 20 people are killed when panic-stricken fans flee knife-wielding ruffians and trigger the collapse of a wall. (This report conflicted with those from the Libyan state news agency JANA, which said two people were killed and 16 were hospitalized.)

Jan. 13, 1991 - Orkney, South Africa; at least 40 people are killed, most of them trampled or crushed along riot-control fences that surround the field, when fans panic and try to escape brawls that break out in the grandstand.

July 14, 1996 - Tripoli, Libya; A riot at a soccer match involving a team controlled by a son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi killed or injured up to 50 people. No exact figures were reported in the Libyan-controlled press.

April 23, 2000 - Monrovia, Liberia; At least three reported dead and others injured as thousands of fans forced their way into an overcrowded stadium for a World Cup qualifier between Liberia and Chad.

July 9, 2000 - Harare, Zimbabwe; Thirteen people died after a stampede at World Cup qualifier between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Panther - google "man beaten at football game" - so US fans are not innocent

Sports drives people nuts - now soccer is known to cause riots and craziness. Google Football hooliganism. Moreover, coaches / players have been murdered due to losses in soccer matches.

Maybe the real truth is that we as a species are barbaric.

So please stop mentioning/comparing outside events to the US. This is no better than people in other countries putting the US down. Take the event for what it is and let it stand on its own. In this event things went out of control and maybe the Egyptians will learn and take proper actions to prosecute / condemn the hooligans who started this.

Some sick people? After 74 killed and hundreds injured? You mean hundreds of sick people all in one stadium. What kind of people would run the field killing folks? This is a sport, not a war zone! Freedom? To do what, what you wish when you want it. Sane people abide by laws set by other sane people. I never heard of it was ok to murder folks at a soccer game. Yes, this has happened elsewhere which does not mean it is ok to do so in Egypt. My question is why did this happen. What sane reason after a game of sport to run the field stomping, beating and killing other folks? This is a disgrace of Mankind no matter where it happens, period!

No one accepts this and when this happens, it does not mean people are "animals." Egyptians gained their freedom despite the 50 years dictatorship that was supported by great forces in the the world. they taught the whole world that power comes from people.

Old regime lobbyist won't let this happen and this is why they keep on hiring "hundreds" of sick to keep making troubles. Egyptians are refusing military government. the revolution has only went a baby step over the last year. This is a great culture and great people out there.

You are so hung up on your idea of freedom you do not see the point. This is about complete dis-regard for Human life and about the lowest form of Mankind taking others lives after a Sporting Event. When your dead you don't have any freedom. When you take others lives for no reason how can you say you are free? That is like saying "I am just going to weld a club or bat and beat another human to death because we just had 50 years of dictatorship and why not after an event as Soccer to get my point across" Hello! Knock Knock! This is not about any Freedoms, it's about insanity of killing others for no other reason then "that you can". Absolutely no excuse, period! Whew!

During Katrina, the New Orlean's local government and our failed FEMA used the Super Dome in New Orleans to house people. 100 deaths were reported there. Our country (US) is a 1st world country and although tragedies happen and could have been prevented, it happened. Soccer games and sport events have historically been violent at times. Stop with the bigoted remarks about religion and judging others. We're no better nor the Dutch, English, etc. Do a Google search on The Soccer War and you can quickly learn how a soccer war of 4 days between El Salvador & Honduras led to many more deaths and years of continued hatred. Honduras lost 100 combat troops, and over 2,000 civilians were killed during the four days, since most of the war was fought on Honduran soil. Thousands more had been ultimately made homeless. So, all the hateful clowns that bash Muslims as well as Egypt need to read about history closer to our own borders.

So Mike, did the hundreds die because of rioting or violence or were many of them from natural causes and stress/pressure from the disastor. There were not 100 murders in the superdome. And comparing a hurricane to a soccer match is the dumbest thing I've ever read. To "whatareyousaying"...they did not teach the world how to gain freedom. They thought young people that if you don't like a rule, just riot and protest and eventually they will change the rule, but I bet you none of the protestors actually knew the implications. Power to Egypt for changing their dictatorship government, but if this is how you are going to act after it's changed then perhaps you found freedome too quickly.

Yep it is so boring...thats why it is the most popular sport in the world. This is probably a waste of time because I'm sure neither of you are even worth anybody's time. I hate doing this, but here goes. "Brady throws the football and it is incomplete" "time to wait around for another five minutes before the next play and lets have a bunch of commercials too." American Football has like what 10 minutes of actual gameplay fit into a four hour long game? Wow thats so exciting!!!!!! And lets not get started on baseball...they aren't even athletes...if a bunch of fat men can play that sport well...then they are not athletes. It takes like 3 hours to play that game and all they do is stand around and maybe run for a few seconds...wow thats so exciting! Real football requires more skill than those two sports combined...don't believe me? play an actual game against skilled players and maybe you two won't be so dumb anymore.

The dumb and dumber keep killing each other, and I don't give a rat's patootie if it happens at a soccer game, in town, or anywhere else for that matter. Big Bill said it - soccer is boring anyway - just stay home and avoid all the fuss. Want some drama? Go to a soccer game...stand on top of trains and complain about the violence...the stupidity of the people in the far east is beyond my capacity to comprehend.

Why the constant need to try and understand the people of the Mid-East? How they deal with one and another is who they are. We try to understand them on our terms, guess what? It will not work. Look at the fact that they have honor killings, they kill there own daughters if they perseve that they have dis-honored the family (meaning the males).

These pictures show me everything I need to know about Arabs and Islam in general. With the exception of some dirtbags in SF and LA, most people don't head out to a game with the intent of harming others. What a 3rd world trash heap. What a nasty, disgusting place and people.

I agree, the religion of peace. The whole area is full of nuts and violent people.

And yet one more reason to stay the hell away from that part of the world. There must be something in the water or air or maybe too much sand, but something is not right with those people. But our government tries to import as many of those people as they can into our country. Why???

Coming soon to a street in the U.S. near you, if these occupy anarchists are allowed to continue their rampaging. They keep stepping up the violence and pushing the boundaries and nothing good will come of it. Currently, these anonymous/occupiers in the U.S. think that it's okay to attack cops and anyone who disagrees with them. They think that it's okay to break into buildings and claim them as their own. They think it's okay to steal flags and burn them. They think it's okay to hack into government and private computer systems and steal peoples private information....Yeah, these anonymous/occupy people model themselves after the anarchists in Cairo. Soon.

The Egyptian people will rise again and cast the miltary rulers souls in stones.

And they probably weren't even serving beer at this event. Boarish behavior without alcohol to blame.
