Fishermen reel in shark the size of a school bus

Fishermen in the Pakistani port of Karachi got more than they bargained for Tuesday as they reeled in one of the biggest fish in the sea: a whale shark.

The Express Tribune, a Pakistani newspaper, reported that the 40-foot fish was first spotted ten days ago in seas about 150 km (93 miles) from the city. Mehmood Khan, the owner of a local fishery, said the shark was unconscious at that time and other reports said that it was found dead Tuesday.

A large crowd gathered as a succession of cranes were brought in to lift the shark on to the pier. After several hours and a number of failed attempts, the leviathan was finally brought ashore and promptly sold for 1.7m Rupees ($18,750).

The whale shark was added to the World Conservation Union's list of threatened species in 2008.

What fish can't have a freak of nature? Other species do, so what's the big deal? Get a grip people, these things happen.

The hardest part was getting the plankton on the fish hook.

Man, what a filthy harbor. I hope the shark died of natural causes because it would be a shame to kill this docile plankton eater.

I seriously doubt that it was found dead! there is not a bite taken out of the fish. Pure stroke of luck that you find it right as its dying- they obviously killed the shark and claimed it was dead beforehand. These are just some among many reasons why the Middle East is the most worthless place on this planet filled with ignorant moronic and hateful people who want to see the world burn! THEY CANT BE TRUSTED UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.

This particular group of Pakistanis must think everybody is as stupid as they are . . . you would think they could have concocted a more believable story after purposely slaughtering one of nature's most beautiful, peaceful, non-threatening and protected mammals on earth . . . these morons have their turbans wrapped a bit too tight I think.

I'm thinking no body has any reading comprehensions skills any more. Spotted 10 days ago (not floating around dead for 10 days). Yes, wouldn't be surprised if they weren't watching and waiting for it to die. The picture shows it wasn't healthy when it died (yes I believe it just died). Looked like it was pretty emaciated. Not unreasonable to accept it was just its time and the fisherman were in the right place at the right time. And to the people that keep saying 'dead fish lose their color quickly', we are not talking about a goldfish here, sharks are not that kind of fish, they don't have scales and their skin is extremely durable (and retains its color after death).

There is an awful lot of blood in the water for something that was supposed to have been "found dead".

Me thinks there is lie being told.

What a waste, the Whale Shark is a plankton eater and posses not threat to anyone.

How do so many people find the time to comment on an article without reading it? Some real winners on this website.

It's sad that this fish die but all things die in time. I don't think they should eat it what kill may cause them to get sick as well. As far as the fisher men killing this fish I don't think so they swim in very deep water for one and I have seen one 250 miles offshore from st.pete. years ago. we were fishing in 150feet of water at that time it look bigger then the boat we were on. Thing happen thing die one dies and then one is born.

Just remember folks, Pakistan is NOT reknown for its wonderful waste disposal systems. The meat from that whale shark was undoubtedly sold to China and put in plastic bags for shipment. No preservatives, just plastic bags. It should be ripe by the time it gets there.

A fisherman caught it using a zebco33 strung with 12# test on a 8' Rhino rod using a white and yellow little George for bait.

These are gentle giants. I read an article in the Smithsonian a couple months back about them.

Hopefully this was Mother Nature taking care of one of her children and not someone killing it.

I do not really feel inclined to believe them. Since the shark does not look that sickly and there are conflicting reports of how it was obtained...

But it was not too long ago that here in America we had high pollution and that killing a rare and large animal was labeled a good thing. Then we found out that these were bad things. We changed.

Ignorance does not make people bad. In time Pakistan will change also and hold our same environmental values.

It is total hypocrisy to be calling them "backwards" or "animals" for something we ourselves did not know up until recently.

If this shark was dead prior to being found by the fisherman wouldn't it be bloated from ya know decomposition? I find it hard to believe that a giant hunk of "dinner" was just floating in the ocean for 10 days without any oceanic scavengers feeding on it. Not that I'm defending them( because we all know that Pakistan supports terrorism) but 3rd world people don't rationalize things like western folks do. They can't look at a situation like the shark and conceptualize charging tourists fees to swim with the shark. I call B.S. on the shark being found unconscious, come on now, how dumb do you think we are?

They spotted it 10 days earlier. Most likely kept their eye on it. If they got it as soon as it died it wouldn't bloat.

When you are dirt poor you must eat whatever you can get and poor people in other countries would starve trying to follow Americas rules. Even if they killed it, none of it will go to waste. just how much food do you throw away in a year?
