Zany Swiss man installs wood-burning stove in car

Why yes, officer, that is a wood-burning stove in my glove box.

It's hard to imagine what led Pascal Prokop to install a wood-burning stove in his 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon. Though we're safe to say that the trend won't catch like wildfire.

Smoke rises from a chimney atop Pascal Prokop's 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon near Zurich on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Wood burns in a stove as Pascal Prokop drives his 1990 Volvo 240 station wagon during cold winter weather on a road near the town of Mettmenstetten, south of Zurich on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Prokob built and installed the wood-fired stove himself and got an operating permit from the Swiss technical inspection authority.

And you thought old Volvo station wagons weren't hot...

Gee, this is the same story my 85 year old father told of going to school. The wagon that picked them up as a school buss had a wood stove in it. And as well at school the kids were to bring wood to help keep warm in the winter. The snow was so deep that they had to walk on the telephone lines to keep from sinking in the snow. Har, har, har, but true. Whats new. If we need to we can return to the stone age. The concept of being civilized is out the window anyhow.

Just goes to show you that people who own Volvos can do and come up with a solution to almost anything. After all, the statistices prove that Volvo owner are more educated and innovative that other vehicle owners.

You really think anyone who puts a fire in their car is more educated? That's a joke! Get in an accident and watch yourself explode! Brains aren't what I think of when I see this!

Shame... Top Gear UK beat this guy to the whole wood burning stove thing about 6 years ago.

From my uncle's journal from 1918 till 1973: "Rudy (the family dog) rode on the fender until we ran into snow
in Wyoming. Then we let him ride in the front floorboard next to the lit lantern that we had to use for heat. The old '29 Chevy did not have a heater.

I gotta wonder though what sorta MPL he's gettin' in that thing (Miles Per Log)???

and think also, with a pipe sraight up like that, even with that little baffle he'd be pulling a helluva suction up that chimney as he's driving down the road...needs to have it bent backwards, parallel to the ground. Anway, pretty neat just the same

Well, better in a sleigh than in a car with gasoline! How stupid is that?

No, I was referring to using a wood stove "gas" as fuel for the car instead of gasoline during the war. It was called "gasifier" Wood gasifiers can power either spark ignition engines, where 100% of the normal petrol can be replaced with little change to the carburation.

When I was first looking at the pictures, I was thinking he installed a wood-burning boiler to run his car! Screw needing to buy gas!

I saw this one on TV. The actual reason for the stove in the car is the following:

This guy wants to sleep in his car, when he's too drunk to drive.

But he can't heat the car with the engine, because as soon as he puts in the key into the ignition
he could be arrested because of drunk driving.
